Hello Voicetubers, and welcome to the Pronunciation Challenge. I’m your host, Hugh and today we’ll be talking about rejection! It sucks, doesn’t it? It also hurts right? As an actor, I have probably gotten rejected more than most people do in a lifetime and I can tell you that it still hurts sometimes. However, I try to see it from a different angle. I try to see it as an opportunity to get stronger! Are there any Dragonball fans out there? Well, if you guys aren’t familiar with Dragonball, the concept is amazingly simple. Without pain, there’s no gain. That’s how the main character, Goku, gets stronger. He has to get to the point where he almost dies to get better. Obviously, we don’t have to go that far, but we do have to go through some sort of pain in order to become a stronger person. Now, let’s get to the featured sentence and we’ll talk about what we should do after we get rejected!

Let’s start this off with a blended combination
You know
With this combination, you want to change the “You” into the Y sound and quickly blend it into “know” to give you, “Y’know”. Some people even say “Ya” instead to give you “ya know”.


Next up, we have
Rejected
Three syllables
Ok, hopefully, you guys have started seeing this pattern by now but some words with “E” or “i” have a short “U” sound instead of their actual letter sounds like short “E” or short “i”. In this case, it’s “ruh” for the first syllable. “Jek” has a short “E” sound and “ted” sounds like the word “did”. Rejected.

Lastly, we have,
Phases
Two syllables.
“Pha” has a long A sound with an F sound in front. “Ses” if spelt out like how it might sound, would be, “ZIS”. Phases.


Moving onto Vocabulary!

For the first one, I want to give you guys an idiom instead that relates to rejection.
1. “Give someone the brush-off”
Definition
rude treatment or behavior by someone who is not interested at all in what another person wants or asks for
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I confessed to Brian today and he totally brushed me off!”

Definition
to refuse to accept, use, or believe something or someone
Used in a sentence, you could say:

And lastly,
3. phase
Definition:
any stage in a series of events or in a process of development
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I’m in a phase of my life where I don’t play as many video games.”

Ok, so what should we do after a rejection? We simply move onto the next one be it relationships, a job, or (in my case) an audition! Letting a rejection hurt you and hold you back means you haven’t let go of it yet. I know it’s hard and my explanation sounds too simple but it really is. Do you know what helps? Make it about you. Focus on you. That way, it doesn’t matter what other people think of you after a rejection. We continue to get better and don’t look back. Just remember that the goal is to better yourself, not proving others wrong. We move onto the next one, or as most of us native speakers say after a rejection, “Onto the next one!”. This is actually the name of a famous Jay-Z song by the way.
You know, it’s funny how this works but you do end up getting revenge on all those who rejected or didn’t appreciate you before. Not because you tried proving them wrong, but by living well. The best revenge is living well.
