“You are the fairy tale told by your ancestors.” ― Toba Beta
Remember me! Though I have to say goodbye, remember me! Oh, I love the movie, Coco. Excuse my horrible singing. I act, I don’t sing. Hello everyone. I see you’re back with me on the Pronunciation Challenge and I’m happy to have you all here again! For the new visitors, hello, I’m Hugh and I’ll be your host today.
So I hope you Voicetubers have watched Coco. It’s one of my favorite films! I always tell people that the Day of the Dead celebration is actually very similar to Chinese culture! We also have a day where we honor our dead relatives. We call it either the Qingming Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day. Family is also very important to Chinese families just like it was for Coco so even though it was a Mexican story, I can deeply relate to it!
So, this video isn’t only about Coco though! We’re talking about this movie because it brings up the theme of ancestry! What is that, you may ask? They're the people in your family who lived before you, or better known as your ancestors! Let’s get to the featured sentence before we find out how we can find out who our ancestors were!
Today’s featured sentence:
I think that we're all curious about who came before us and where we got all our talents, our proclivities.
I’ll say that again.
I think that we're all curious about who came before us and where we got all our talents, our proclivities.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
curious
Three syllables.
For the first syllable, try saying “ear”. Then add a C or K sound in front. “CU”. “RI” has a long E sound and “OUS”, just say “is”. Curious.
Next up, we have
talents
Two syllables
Try saying the name “Al” for the first syllable but with a T in front. “TAL”. For “lents”, imagine it being spelt “lenz”. Talents.
Lastly, we have,
proclivities
Four syllables.
“Pro” sounds like pro like a professional. “Cli” has a short i sound. “Vi” has a short U sound and “ties” just sounds like the letter T. Proclivities.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. curious
Definition
interested in learning about people or things around you
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I’m really curious about the solar system.”
Next word,
2. talent
Definition
(someone who has) a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“He’s got a natural talent for singing.”
And lastly,
3. proclivity
Definition:
the fact that someone likes something or likes to do something, especially something considered morally wrong
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Amber Heard has a proclivity for drama.”
Like what I did there with that last sentence? I swear she’s guilty! Alright, so back to ancestry! It all seems very interesting and all but how would this work for Asians? A lot of our ancestors kept that information in their respective villages, no? How would Ancestry get a hold of that information? That’s why I’ve always been hesitant (hesitant means unsure) to try it although I’m really curious to find out who my ancestors could be. Oh, have you guys watched this new Netflix documentary called, Our Father? This one is crazy. It’s about a fertility doctor (the doctor that helps with getting people pregnant) who used his own sperm to impregnate unsuspecting (these moms had no clue) mothers and had 94 children! Their own doctor did this to them! You listeners should watch that if you’re into that sort of stuff.
Sorry for going from Coco to Our Father. I didn’t mean to end on a negative note! Alright, that about does it for today. Make sure to get your recordings in if you haven’t done so. Give me a follow on Instagram if you want to see what I’m up to at Hughtran_. Ok, until next time, see ya!

我想我們都很好奇我們的祖先是怎麼樣的人及我們的天份或癖好是怎麼來的。
【心得】如果祖先是惡名昭彰的壞人,那...就不要讓我知道吧!有時候無知也是一種福氣:p
