Intro:
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Shinkansen.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to VoiceTube’s pronunciation challenge. I’m Tera. Have you ever had a self-guided trip to Japan? If yes, I imagine you may already be familiar with Japan’s transportation system. And, yeah, today’s video is bringing us to Japan’s Shinkansen. Speaking of this, I still remember that I bought the JR pass, and traveled to Hakone and Karuizawa by Shinkansen with my family right before the outbreak of COVID-19. It’s really fast and comfy. Oh, I miss the good old days spent with my family…alright, back to the topic, let’s take a look at the daily sentence.
Featured sentence: Up against bureaucratic obstacles and fierce opposition, the two drove the project forward.
Tips:
against: two syllables with the stress on the second one. Although this word looks hard, it’s easy to pronounce. First, say "again", and then put the "s" & "t" on it. That’s it! Again, "against".
bureaucratic: four syllables with the stress on the third one. Now let’s break them down. "bu" is /bjʊ/, "reau" is a minor /rə/, "cra" is our stressed syllable and is pronounced as /kræ/. And then, "tic" is /tɪk/. Altogether, "bu-reau-cra-tic".
obstacles: three syllables with the stress on the first one. "ob" takes the short, open /ɑ/ as its vowel. "sta" has a bit /d/ sound, so it’s /stə/. Finally, add up "cle", which is, /kəl/ and "s", and make it "ob-sta-cles".
fierce: only one syllable. The vowel of this vowel is /ɪ/. Put other consonants together and we get "fierce".
opposition: four syllables with the stress on the third one. "o" is /a/, "ppo" is /pə/, "si" has a /z/ sound, which is /zɪ/, and then add up "tion". Altogether, "o-ppo-si-tion".
Vocab:
bureaucratic (adj.) KK [͵bjʊrəˋkrætɪk] IPA /ˌbjʊr.əˈkræt̬.ɪk/
def: involving long and difficult dealings with officials
官僚政治的
Because of the bureaucratic red tape, Nick was not able to get his passport on time.
因為官僚拖拉費時的繁瑣手續,Nick 沒辦法準時拿到他的護照。
obstacle (n.) KK [ˋɑbstək!] IPA /ˈɑːb.stə.kəl/
def: something that blocks you so that movement, going forward, or action is prevented or made more difficult
阻礙(物)
Fiona overcomes many obstacles, and finally becomes a well-known scientist.
Fiona 克服了阻礙,最後成為了一位有名的科學家。
fierce (adj.) KK [fɪrs] IPA /fɪrs/
強烈的;殘酷的;猛烈的
def: violent and frightening
The fierce battle between Ukraine and Russia is still ongoing.
烏克蘭與俄羅斯之間的交戰持續進行著。
Outro:
Thanks to Japan building the world’s first high-speed rail line in 1959 and its lead, now many countries also have their own high-speed rails. For instance, France, on September 22, 1981, ran their extraordinary high-speed train, known as TGV, for the first time. Usually departing from Paris, it operates all over France and beyond. After that, Germany also had their ICE, a system of high-speed trains predominantly running in Germany. Italy, Spain, England…many countries in Europe later on have their own high-speed trains, and these make it easier and more efficient for people to travel between European cities. Taiwan also had its HSR operated in May, 2007. It only takes around one and a half hours for people to get to Kaohsiung from Taipei, a lot faster than TRA, whose Puyuma Express takes 3 hrs and 40 mins. If you haven’t watched the video, be sure to click on the video link down below for more information about Japan’s bullet trains. This is Tera. I wish you all good health and a calm mind.
