Jenny 的逐字稿底加! Intro: G’day, VoiceTubers! How important are our clothes to the way other people see us? What about our hair? Our make-up? Is it easier to trust someone who looks neat and sophisticated? The answer is most likely yes. A person wearing a suit might make people take him or her more seriously. But have that same person wear shorts and a t-shirt and people might see him or her in a completely different light. These are just examples of social stigma. Somehow our brains are inclined to work this way to judge people without us even realizing it. Some people, however, are using this to their advantage. Our video today talks about a phenomenon called the lab coat effect. Scammers are good at pretending to look like someone of authority, by dressing up seriously and speaking accordingly, making us believe that he is who he claims to be. We must be careful and make sure we look out for signs of fraud from the beginning. A man who shows up at the front door claiming he’s from the gas department says he needs to change your device for safety reasons and charge you for it? Usually, there would be a written notice put out in advance so it’d be a good idea to check earlier on if what he is saying is legit. Ask the guy to prove proof of identification before you let him in. The last time a guy came to upgrade our gas meter, the fee was charged onto our next utility bill. So, if you’re asked to pay cash in person, it’s best to verify that it’s not a scam. Alright, let’s have a listen to our sentence of the day.
Sentence: So if our brains follow authority, how do we bolster our defenses against scammers in sheep's clothing? 所以如果我們的大腦會跟隨著權威的話,我們該如何在面對披著羊皮的詐騙犯時提高自己的保護力呢?
Pronunciation Tips:
authority bolster defense scammer
Vocabulary: 1. authority KK[əˋθɔrətɪ] IPA//əˈθɔːr.ə.t̬i/ n.權威人士;專家 an expert on a subject n. 權力;管轄權 the moral or legal right or ability to control
Example: Rachel was granted authority from her boss to decide who to hire for the position. Rachel 的老闆給她權限來挑選新員工要雇用哪位?
2.bolster KK[ˋbolstɚ] IPA//ˈboʊl.stɚ/ v. 提高;支撐 to support or improve something or make it stronger n. 長靠枕 a long firm cylinder-shaped pillow

3. scammer KK[ˋskæmɚ] IPA//ˈskæm.ɚ/ n. 欺詐者 someone who makes money using illegal methods, especially by tricking people
Example: If you think you have wired money to a scammer by accident, you can report it to the police. 若你不小心匯了錢給詐騙集團,你可以報警。
Outro: It’s a shame that we always need to be cautious in trusting other people. Wouldn’t it be nice to think that most people have a good heart and won’t try to scam you? Some friends of mine paid a large sum of money as a deposit for an apartment, then realized the agent was a fraud and he ran away with the money. These scammers are experts at making you do what they want you to do and sometimes even fear their authority. Be sure to watch out for warning signs and remember that you have the right to verify authenticity before you give out your personal info or money. Have you got a story to share with us? Don’t forget to record your challenge sentence and leave us a comment! Thanks for listening and bye for now.
