“You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Morpheus
Are any of you guys fans of the Matrix? I definitely am and have always fantasized about having skills just uploaded into my brain like Stephen Curry’s shooting skills, Mike Tyson’s boxing skills, and Meryl Streep’s acting skills. It sounds fun, doesn’t it? Hi, everyone, it’s your Pronunciation Challenge host, Hubert here. Today we’re diving into a video that explores the possibility that we may be living in a simulation. What’s a simulation? Well, think of the game, Sims, and imagine the characters you control as yourselves. Perhaps the world we’re living in is inside one giant computer. Many films have touched upon this topic and I always found it entertaining. Also, check out Love, Death & Robots as well. There’s an episode about simulations. I won’t spoil it for you so you’ll just have to watch it to find out. The series is awesome, believe me and each episode can range from several minutes to 30 minutes so you have no excuse not to watch it! Alright, let’s practice the featured sentence and come back so I can tell you guys about my brief, “simulated” experience!
Today’s featured sentence:
“All of this—living and inanimate, microscopic and cosmic—is governed by mathematical laws with apparently arbitrary constants.”
從生命到無生命、微觀到宇宙觀的這一切,都由任意常數的數學法則所掌管。
I’ll say that again.
“All of this—living and inanimate, microscopic and cosmic—is governed by mathematical laws with apparently arbitrary constants.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Inanimate
Four syllables.
The first syllable “i” is the short “i” sound which quickly goes into the second syllable, “na” which contains the short “a” sound supported by the first letter, “n”. Then we have “ni” which takes on more of a short “u”. The last syllable, “mate”, sounds like the first half of “mitten”, “mit”. Inanimate.
Next up, we have
Microscopic
Four syllables
The first syllable, “Mi”, sounds more like “my” like the possessive pronoun. “Cro” sounds like the bird, “Crow”. “SCOP” sounds like the word, “COP” but with an “S” to support it in front. The last syllable is “pic” which is the same sound as the word “pick” like “pick a color”. Microscopic.
And our last one would be,
Arbitrary
Four syllables.
The first syllable, “AR” sounds exactly like the letter “R”. “BI” has a short “u” sound supported by the letter “b”. The last two syllables, “TRARY” kind of sounds like the word “cherry” but replace the “CH” sound with a “TR” instead and you get “trary”. Arbitrary.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Inanimate
Definition
having none of the characteristics of life that an animal or plant has 無生命的
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I sometimes catch myself apologizing to inanimate objects when I accidentally bump into them.”
我發現自己不小心撞到沒有生命的物體時,會向它們道歉。
Next word,
2. Cosmic
Definition
relating to the universe and the natural processes that happen in it 宇宙的
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“NASA plans to launch a satellite to study cosmic rays.”
NASA 計劃發射一顆衛星來研究宇宙射線。
And lastly,
3. Arbitrary
Definition:
based on chance rather than being planned or based on reason 任意的;隨機的;隨心所欲的
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The borders assigned to Asia on the west are somewhat arbitrary.”
分給亞洲西部的邊界有些隨意。
You know, if our entire lives were governed by a computer, I don’t think I would find much meaning in life. Afterall, it was a computer that gave me a purpose. I didn’t come up with it myself so what’s the point? Ok, so for my crazy story, I want to share with everyone the time I saw a “glitch in the matrix”. A glitch is like when something goes wrong in a game or a computer program. For me, it was when I was living in Toronto and I saw a moving train “glitch” backwards while it was moving and quickly correct itself back into place. Perhaps, my memory is playing tricks on me but for me, I remember it as clear as day. I believe that we’re in a simulation, do you?
Ok, guys, that does it for my Wednesday episode this week. Thanks for tuning in and practicing with me on the Pronunciation Challenge. As always, find me on Iinstagram at hughtran_. See you in the next episode, bye!
