What’s up, VoiceTubers! Welcome back to today’s pronunciation challenge! So I am subbing for Minjane today, because of a sudden “work from home” policy from VoiceTube and she can’t make it to the office to record… I hope you guys don’t mind listening to my voice two days in a row this week. Hopefully, by next week. It will be back to normal! Stay at home people!
Today’s pronunciation challenge will be about our wisdom teeth. And what are wisdom teeth exactly? So, basically, they’re the teeth in the back of your mouth and they’re the last adult teeth to come into the mouth. Despite their clever name, they may not be as good as the name appears. So, what’s wrong with wisdom teeth, though? Let’s take a look at the sentence before you watch the video.

☺Our ancient ancestors used them the same way we use our other eight molars: to grind up food, which was especially handy before the advent of cooking around seven thousand years ago, back when our diet consisted of raw meat and plants that were fibrous and tough to chew.

(n.C or U)磨、研磨;磨擦聲
■handy [ˋhændɪ] (adj.)

Our ancient(/ˈeɪn.ʃənt/古代的) ancestors(ˈæn.ses.tɚ/祖先n.) used them the same way we use our other eight molars(/ˈmoʊ.lɚ/臼齒): to *grind up(/ɡraɪnd ʌp/磨碎v.) food, which was especially handy(/ˈhæn.di/便利的) before the advent(/ˈæd.vent/出現v.) of cooking around seven thousand years ago, back(以前;追溯adv.) when our diet *consisted of(由...組成) raw(生的) meat and plants that were fibrous(ˈfaɪ.brəs/纖維構成的) and tough(/tʌf/堅韌的) to chew(/tʃuː/嚼碎v.).

What’s up, VoiceTubers! Welcome back to today’s pronunciation challenge! So I am subbing(sub/sʌb/臨時代替他人做v.) for Minjane today, because of a sudden “work from home” policy from VoiceTube and she can’t make it to the office to record. I hope you guys don’t mind(介意v.) listening to my voice two days *in a row(連續n.) this week. Hopefully, by next week. It will be back to normal! Stay at home people! So today’s pronunciation challenge will be about our *wisdom teeth(智齒). And what are wisdom teeth exactly? So, basically, they’re the teeth in the back of our mouth and they’re the last *adult teeth(=permanent teeth永久齒) to come into the mouth. Despite(儘管adv.) their clever(聰明的) name, they may not be as good as the name appears(顯現v.). So, what’s wrong with wisdom teeth, though? Let’s take a look at the sentence before you watch the video.

■ sub /sʌb/ v.
As a young player, he subbed for Duke Ellington's drummer.

1. grind /graɪnd/ v. 碾碎,磨碎 = to make something into small pieces or a powder by pressing between hard surfaces
Do you know there’s a tool that can grind pills(藥片) into powder(粉狀n.)? It’s really convenient.

■ have an ax to grind : 想爭對錯;別有用心 = to have a selfish reason or strong opinion that influences your actions
ax /æks/ n. 斧 = axe

The student has an ax to grind with his teacher because failed this course(課程n.).

2. handy /ˈhændi/ a.

My air conditioner is broken. Looks like I have to call a handyman.

3. advent /ˈæd.vent/ /ˈæd.vənt/ n.(事件、發明或人物的)出現,來臨,到來 = the fact of an event happening, an invention being made, or a person arriving
I wonder what the city looked like before the advent of electricity(電力n.).

Alright, that’s it. You know, I‘ve already got two wisdom teeth in my mouth, but I haven’t experienced any pain or anything. I guess I’m pretty lucky huh? But I still got two more to grow, so hopefully, I won’t have to go to the dentist(牙醫) when they grow. All right, don’t forget to record today’s sentence and watch the video before you leave, see ya!
