☺I feel like it sucks my time away, in the way that a significant other almost would.
People become the sum total of what they produce. Human beings act like machines whose function is to make money. This is absolutely wrong. The purpose of making money is the happiness of humankind, not the other round. Humans are not for money, money is for humans. We need enough to live, so money is necessary, but we also need to realize that if there is too much attachment to wealth, it does not help at all.”
的[+of]
S.O. = significant other (重要的另一半)即指情人或伴侶

0:29 Social media, love it or hate it, you can’t look away(移開視線) from its impact on our lives. So, for me, personally, I’m a bit ashamed([əˋʃemd]a.羞愧的) to say that Twitter is the only way to get me out of bed. My morning usually goes like this: After hit the snooze button(貪睡按鈕) for the tenth time, I’m reluctantly([rɪˋlʌktəntlɪ]adv.勉強地) unlock my phone, open Twitter, click on the trending(a. 在網路上很紅的) page, see some depressing and infuriating([ɪnˋfjurɪ͵etɪŋ]a.令人生氣的) news, and the frustration([͵frʌsˋtreʃən]n.挫折) and anger coursing(course[kors]v.流動) through my veins([ven]n.血管) wake me up. I know this’s probably the most unhealthy way to wake up but I just couldn’t help it. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to try(trying?) my method, honestly, don’t get out of bed because of anger. However, through out the day, I won’t open social media Apps unless it’s for work or if my friends wanna chat(v. I’m pretty proud of myself for staying away from those Apps during the day(白天). The reason I really keep track of how long I use social media is that I need to make sure it’s not affecting my health. I’m a pretty sensitive([ˋsɛnsətɪv]a.敏感的) and self-conscious(害羞的a.) person. And using social media means I need to put myself out there. I’m just not comfortable with it, I need a lot of alone(a.單獨的) time to recharge so that I can reconnect {with the world},and my plans work for me. At the end of the day, I think social media is necessary but {so is finding} the balance so you won’t lose your sanity([ˋsænətɪ]n.

I think social media is necessary, but so is finding the balance so you won’t lose your sanity. 「我認為社群媒體是必要的,但 (but) 找到平衡點 (finding the balance),才不會失去理智 (so you won’t lose your sanity),這也是很重要的 (so is)。」

其實後半句也可以寫成 ..., but finding the balance is also necessary; that way, you won't lose your sanity.

Our sentence of the day sums up(總結) social media pretty nicely: “I feel like it sucks my time away, in a way that a significant other almost would.”

1. significant [sɪgˋnɪfəkənt] (adj.)
There’s significant amount of people shopping online during the holiday season.

Chris’ significant other happens to work for a major e-Commerce([ˋkɑmɝs]n.貿易) platform.

2-1. suck [sʌk] (v.)
I find it hard to suck a cup of milkshake through a paper straw.

2-2. suck [sʌk] (v.)
So, some might say paper straws suck, but it’s better than the plastic alternative([ɔlˋtɝnətɪv]n.

3-1. almost [ˋɔl͵most] (adv.)
From the evidence gathered, the police are almost certain that they found the perpetrator([͵pɝpəˋtretɚ]n.

3-2. nearly [ˋnɪrlɪ] (adv.)
Unlike cold case that’s nearly impossible to solve, this one is cut-and-dried.
+ cut-and-dried簡單的
+ cold case懸案

That’s the end of today’s episode. I got a question for you: How often do you use social media, or what kind of social media do you prefer? Tell me in the comment section below and doesn’t forget to leave your recordings, I’ll see you next week.

Honestly, the highlight of the video should be that ten-year-old boy at 1:31 who said, "I don't have social media and I just don't support it."

I didn't have his maturity when I was his age. Respect, kid.

- still in existence; unsettled, unpaid, or unresolved
■ There are still a couple of problems outstanding.
■ We still have some outstanding issues to resolve.

I feel like it sucks my time away, in the way that a significant other almost would.
