不過我從中學到很多字彙哈哈哈哈哈哈哈 ------------------------------------------------ 大家好Hello everyone ,welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge or rather vocabulary challenge ,my name is Eric from Eric’s English Lounge and I have been a curriculum writer and the teacher for fifteen years ,that’s right. 15年,不是50年,但是很久的時間 I just got back from studying in teaching at USC(南加州大學,University of Southern California)and before I head back to school for more a pain(在我痛苦的回學校以前) ,I will be your new host on VoiceTube.
So today we’re gonna try sth. a little different in a dictionary to teach you pronunciation ,I also want to focus on expanding your vocabulary and academic knowledge.對,就是學科的單詞跟知識
So let’s warm up first ,today’s topic is “How to prepare for the next global recession” So what are some English words that come to your mind when your hear global recession ,probably not good words ,like maybe no jobs ,no money ,unhappy , so these are possible words that you might think of ,so before you begin reading or listening to any new topic ,you can all take a moment to read and think about the title.
And this will help you tap into your prior knowledge (利用你先前的知識)and connect it with new information that you’re about to learn.
So that’s jump into our sentence of the day. ------------------------------------------------ In 2008 and 2009, the dominoes were really set up for quite a nasty financial and economic crisis. 2008 年與 2009 年間,骨牌效應確實誘發了一場很糟糕的金融、經濟危機
Okay ,so now I want to focus on our pronunciation and I want to focus on words strength in particular ,(我想要專注在單字的重點發音)if you just read the sentence in a very monotone (單調的)flat way. 就是很平的方式 Then it’s very difficult for listeners to pick up the key points ,you might read like this.
~~~
So words stress (重音)is very important when you are speaking for an extended period of time and you want listeners to pick up your key points(讓聽眾了解你想要表達的重點) ,and this is also critical when you are taking standardized exam such as the TOEFL and IELTS ,which place great emphasis on word stress and not so much on accent ,as long as your accent does not affect your intelligent ability.(只要你的口音不影響你的了解能力)
Okay and one more thing you might be curious about is how to read the dates .Do you say “twenty o night” or “two thousand and night” or “two thousand night” or you can use any of these three forms , you just have to be consistent(連續不間斷) and rather (而不是)depends whether you’re using British English or American English ,but all three are fine.(不管你是何種口音,只要念的順即可)
Okay ,let’s take a break. Like mention earlier I have been a teacher for many years and I specialized teaching international students and consulting organizations like ETS (Educational Testing Service,美國教育考試中心) 、The British Council (英國文化協會)and even government policy makers(政府政策制定者).
And until that ,most international students are good at pronunciation and they have excellent grammatical knowledge(大部分國際學生擁有很不錯的發音及文法觀念) ,by fixing their big problem is that sometimes they simply don’t know what to said and academic professional contents(無法表達他們想說的及學術專業內容) , especially when they have to speak for extended period of time and I don’t mean daily life conversations which consistently short phrase that rely on the situation like “How’s it going”、 ”I’m good.” 、”Check this out”
I mean using language as a way to acquire(取得) knowledge at a higher level and to communicate complicate thoughts ,to use language for more than social purposes , if you like to learn more about vocabulary ,expend your knowledge and develop critical thinking at the same time(不僅要學更多字彙,也要擴展你的知識量及發展你的批判性思考) ,check out a critical vocabulary course ,I’m opening with Voicetube ,we have one free class ,so sign up for that. ------------------------------------------------ 1. the economy (n,)經濟;經濟制度 >the relationship between production trend in supply of money in a particular country or region ,I would try to remember the economy using other words.
*the world economic 世界經濟 *The economic is in recession. 經濟陷入衰退 This actually helps me to reinforce my understanding and be able to use the word in context.
2. economic [͵ikəˋnɑmɪk] (adj.)經濟的 >means connective with trend,industry and development of a country .So I would use, *economic growth 經濟增長;經濟成長 *economic policy 經濟政策
In this way ,we can avoid making mistakes like “economic grow” ,in Chinese ,we don’t really have word forms(字型變化) ,so by using the collocation ,you can actually like say earlier reinforce you’re understanding and be able to use context without as many hesitation because you’re memorizing in using longer lexical chunk(更長的詞彙串), a longer grouping of words rather than just the individual word.
3. economics [͵ikəˋnɑmɪks] (n.)經濟學 >It’s a study of how a society organize its money trend and industry.
In this word is not so bad ,you can just say: *study economics (學習經濟) *Economics is a difficult subject to learn. (經濟學是一個叫難學的學科。)
4. monetary [ˋmʌnə͵tɛrɪ] (adj.)貨幣的;金融的 >relating to money ,especially all the money in the particular country ,so I would use,
*monetary policy (貨幣政策) To help me memorize this word and monetary policy usually deals with interest rates (利率) ,so I can memorize this sentence like: *The government uses monetary policy to lower its interest rates and increase spending.
See everything ★ tisen together and this word to help you remember how to use this word in context.
5. fiscal [ˋfɪsk!] (adj.)財政的;國庫的 >It means connective with government or public money ,especially taxes ,but it’s still kind of difficult to remember.
So I usually associate monetary policy with interest rates and fiscal policy with taxes , so I can say a sentence like this,
*The government uses monetary policy to lower interest rates and uses fiscal policy to decrease taxes, both of these policies can help the government increase spending and fight recession.
Okay ,that wrapped up(包括) the pronunciation or rather academic vocabulary challenge for today, I hoped you enjoy the class and I’ll see you next week.
Here is my rough script for your reference:
Hello, everyone! Welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge or rather Vocabulary Challenge! My name is Eric from Eric’s English Lounge, and I have been a curriculum writer, and teacher for 15 years. I just got back from studying/teaching at USC and before I head back to school for more pain, I’ll be your new host on VT!
Today, we’re going to try something a little different. In addition to teaching pronunciation, I also want to focus on expanding your vocabulary and academic knowledge.
So let’s warm up first! So today’s topic is “How to Prepare for the Next Global Recession”
OK, so what English words come to your mind when you hear global recession?
Before you begin reading or listening to a new topic, take a moment to read or listen to the title. This will help you tap into your prior knowledge and connect it with new information that you are about to learn.
So, let’s jump into our sentence of the day:
In 2008 and 2009, the dominoes 多米諾骨牌遊戲 were really set up 佈置安排 for quite a nasty 糟糕的 financial 財政的;金融的 and economic 經濟的;經濟上的 crisis 危機.
A little bit faster this time.
In 2008 and 2009, the dominoes were really set up for quite a nasty financial and economic crisis.
Now I want to focus on pronunciation, and I want to focus on word stress in particular. If you just read the sentence in a monotonic/flat way, then it is very difficult for listeners to pick up the key points. You might read like this:
However, if you read with stress on the keywords you want listeners to hear, it will be easier for them. In this case, the stress is on set up and nasty. This is critical when you are communicating and taking tests such as the TOEFL and IELTS, which place great emphasis on word stress and not so much on accent as long as your words are intelligible.
One more thing, some of you might wonder how to read the dates:
2009: twenty oh nine (British and American) or two thousand and nine (British)/two thousand nine (American)
So, like I mentioned earlier, I have been a teacher for many years, and I specialize in teaching international university students and consulting organizations like ETS and the British Council and even government policymakers. I feel that most international students here have good pronunciation and can repeat sentences well, but the biggest problem is that they simply do not know what to say in academic and professional contexts, and I do not mean daily life conversations, which consist of short phrases that rely on the situation (how’s it going, I’m good, check this out).
I mean using language as a way to acquire knowledge at a higher level and to communicate complex thoughts, to use language for more than social purposes. If you would like to learn more about vocabulary, expand your knowledge, and develop critical thinking at the same time, check out a critical vocab course I am opening up with VT. We will have one free class so sign up for that no matter what.
Ok, let’s go over some new words:
1. the economy 經濟;經濟制度
the relationship between production, trade and the supply of money in a particular country or region
Are businesses doing well? Do people have jobs?
the world economy 世界經濟 the economy is in a recession 經濟陷入衰退
2. economic 經濟的
connected with the trade, industry and development of wealth of a country, an area or a society
economic growth 經濟增長 economic policy 經濟政策
3. economics 經濟學 the study of how a society organizes its money, trade and industry
study economics 學習經濟學 economics is a difficult subject 經濟學是很難的學科
4. monetary 貨幣的,金融的 relating to money, especially all the money in a particular country monetary policy貨幣政策 lowers interest rates 降低利率 increases interest rates 提高利率
5. fiscal 財政的;國庫的 connected with government or public money, especially taxes fiscal policy 財政政策 taxes 稅
In closing, try the sentence out with stress and you can even try stressing different words (nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs) to see how it affects your sentence. OK, that’s it for today, I will see you next week!
*the stock market plummeted or the share market tumbled .股市下跌/暴跌
If you just read the sentence in a very monotone(單調的) flat way. Then it’s very difficult for listeners to pick up the key points(讓聽的人很難找到重點).
*monotone(v)單調的讀(n)單調
Word stress is very important when you’re speaking for an extended period of time(當你說話經過ㄧ段時間) and you want listeners to pick up your key points.
And it is also critical(重要的) when you are taking a standardized exam(標準化的測驗), such as TOEFL or IELS, which places great emphasis on words stress and not so much on accent (應該強調放在重音而不是口音)as long as your accent does not affect your intelligent ability.
The world economy 世界經濟
The economy is in recession經濟正處於蕭條.
Economic growth 經濟的成長 Economic policy 經濟的政策
By using collocation(搭配), you can actually reinforce (強化)your understanding and be able to use the words in context without as many hesitations because you’re memorizing and using longer lexical chunk(字匯組塊/單元). A longer grouping of words(更長的字組) rather than just the individual.
*the stock market plummeted or the share market tumbled .股市下跌/暴跌
If you just read the sentence in a very monotone(單調的) flat way. Then it’s very difficult for listeners to pick up the key points(讓聽的人很難找到重點).
*monotone(v)單調的讀(n)單調
Word stress is very important when you’re speaking for an extended period of time(當你說話經過ㄧ段時間) and you want listeners to pick up your key points.
And it is also critical(重要的) when you are taking a standardized exam(標準化的測驗), such as TOEFL or IELS, which places great emphasis on words stress and not so much on accent (應該強調放在重音而不是口音)as long as your accent does not affect your intelligent ability.
The world economy 世界經濟
The economy is in recession經濟正處於蕭條.
Economic growth 經濟的成長
Economic policy 經濟的政策
By using collocation(搭配), you can actually reinforce (強化)your understanding and be able to use the words in context without as many hesitations because you’re memorizing and using longer lexical chunk(字匯組塊/單元). A longer grouping of words(更長的字組) rather than just the individual.
Economics is a difficult subject to learn. - *I can’t agree more.
Monetary policy 貨幣政策
It usually deals with the interest rate.
The government uses monetary policy to lower its interest rates and increase spending.
The government uses fiscal policy (財政政策)to decrease taxes.
Both of these policies can help the government increase spending and fight recession.
