1st 1 Can you tell us a little bit about the San Diego Zoo Safari Park that we're at today?

Yes, you were.

We're here in a beautiful Escondido of probably about 30 miles north of San Diego, the actual city.

So we have 1800 acres here and over 3000 animals.

Wow, that is a lot of ants in second place, half of the safari park.

It's set aside as a native biodiversity reserves we have are African animals here and are a native Wildlife is well, and they just all hang out together.

They go to each other's birthday parties, and yet you never know what happens at night lets you guys tell us about your rules here at the park.

I'm a wildlife care supervisor here, and I've been with the Bird department for 23 years.

Wow, definitely.

I couldn't imagine working anywhere else.

Yeah, um are my main role, I would say, is to Tino ensure that all the birds here that live at the park have the best possible care.

And then we also support a lot of breeding programs.

Conservation programs locally and globally.

Amazing.

Yeah, good for you.

And I'm a wildlife research specialist at the San Diego Zoo is Institute for Conservation Research, which is our research arm of the San Diego Zoo Global.

So I actually lead our bro ing out research program here in Southern California.

Can you tell us a little bit about your conservation projects?

Yeah, definitely.

I think, Um, probably one of our biggest success stories for the bird department would be the California Condor.

Yeah.

So in 1987 there are only 27 birds here alive in the world.

And so we, um, through work we did here and with some of our other partners.

Um, breeding and release.

We now have over 500 California condors.

It's amazing and over 300 actually living in the wild.

And we have breeding pairs and Yeah.

Did they have?

Very exciting.

They do have names.

Yeah, We just had our first chick here at the park about a week ago today.

But you have a name yet?

Not yet.

I'm sure chat also has some names.

We'll figure it out.

Uh, why does the San Diego Zoo Safari Park breed and study burrowing else?

So burrowing owls are a native species in North America, and they've been declining for the past few decades.

And now So we've been studying them for about 10 years now, here in San Diego County, learning a lot about the species, what happens in the wild with the species.

And because of that decline, we've had the opportunity to start conservation breeding program here at the Safari Park.

So Kristina's group looks after the owls here at the park, and then the team that I lied helps put them back out into the wild.

And then we keep track of what happens to them once she face of such a great partnership.

Those kind of sad though, right?

You like raisin getting prepped and ready to go Yeah, yeah, it's really nerve racking, but it's just so rewarding.

Thio 1st 1st season, we had some some birds that we bred here that went to the wild and actually raised chicks there.

So it's Yeah, right now, breeding themselves.

Super exciting.

Yeah.

That's so amazing.

So what is so distinctive about burrowing owls?

I don't know too much about them.

I have to be honest.

Although the name is, like, slightly hard to say.

So I keep a bag and I'm just like you nailed it.

You tell us a little bit more and another.

They're small owl and some real wildlife was very happy.

We gotta get him in here.

They play the game, right?

Yeah.

So burrowing owls are a species that's a native here.

Like those Ravens there.

Negative.

There are a lot of trouble.

Radio the time they got me good only when the the brewing I was a very small Yeah, they're small and they live.

They use burrows for nesting.

So their unique in that way that they are nothing and burrows in the ground.

So they rely on other species of animals that dig those burrows for Yeah, yeah, they spend a lot of time on the ground, um, and and they lay their eggs and burrows, which is what you can see, although on the borough cam so cute and they are one of the other things it's really unique about them is that they're active pretty much around the clock so that you can see them like they're active in the day.

They're active at night, so they're not just like night out there, just like 24 7 all time low.

That's pretty cool on TV every all the time around.

Could you explain more about their nesting habits and what the audience will see when they view the camp?

We showed the burrow, and I think it had some of their food just like lined up for them.

They're like having a dance party right now.

So what?

What can they expect to see?

So we have.

We have two cams.

One is out in their in their habitat where you see the two owls right now, and you will see them when it rains.

I do love taking showers, and it's a lot of fun to watch.

When I came in a couple of the birds were doing this.

You can see the fathers always doesn't rain here very often.

So they I'll enjoy it when it does on.

And then the other camera is in our in the burrow.

And right now you can see it's kind of full of some dead mounts carcasses.

Uh, which is, actually you know exactly what they're supposed to be doing.

Yeah, they bringing food into the burrows, and they actually keepers will provide at the beginning of the season.

They provide horse manure, and the the owls will actually take that and bring it into the burrow as well.

On what it does is attacks bugs to the bro's and kind of brings a food source there so that they have plenty of food to feed.
