Waas, um, aftertheurbanuprisingsofthesixties, whentheKernerCommission, whichwas a commissionthatwasnamedbythepresident, saidthemediahadinmanywayscontributedtothefactthatthethattheurbanriotsoccurredandthatwasbecausetheyhadnotintegratedtheirreportingandtheeditingstaffs, andinmanyways, theysaidtheywerejustshowingusAmericaonlythroughwhiteeyes.
So I startedatthepostin 1961.
When I wentbackin 1972 itwas a littledifferentbecausethereweremorereportersofcolorrights, morefemales.
Butstillitwasverywhite, Maledominated.
Youcameintothisworldat a timewhenitwasjustsomethingthatdidnothappen.
Youwalkedinto a newsroomwheretherewereonlytwootherreporterswhowereblack.
YouwerethefirstAfricanAmericanwomaninthisspaceandreadinginthebookthatisoneofthe I meanjustthemostharrowingpassageswheretheyhad a policyoff, notreportingwhenblackpeopleweremurdered.
I triedtotohelpthem, and I thinktheway I beganworkinginthatenvironmentisbecauseDrMartinLutherKingwasbeginningtosaytoyoungblackpeoplegointowhycorporationsandExcelsopart.
Itfeltlike I wasalmostpartofthefreedommovementbygoingandbecomingthefirstAfricanAmericanwomantoTheWashingtonPost.

Youknow, peopleofcolorandtwowomeninmanyrespects, andandwhatyouargueinthismagazineisthatblackpeoplebasicallyhavethejobofmakingit a truth.
I feellike I havesomanyfriendsthataredoingamazingthingsalso, So I wanttogivethem a platformjusttospeaktheirmindandwhatevertheywanttodotoandjustthioputoutnewtalentsthatyouknow, don't thinktheirvoiceshavebeenheardinthepast.
Ergo, youknow, whitenessisassociatedwithsmartness, andthenyougolike, No, I'm goingtobeasblackasyouthink a blackpersoncanbewhilestillmaintainingthatlevelofintelligence.
Isthatisthat a lotofswitchingis a marvelousculturaltradition, and I loveit.
I lovethat I'm abletodoitright.
I alsolovethat I'm abletochoosenottodoit.
What I amdoingwhen I doitisthat I amacknowledgingthefactthat I haveachievedcertainahstatussymbolsthatwetendtoassociatewithpeoplewhodon't looklikeme.
And I wanttomakepeopleuncomfortablewiththefactthattheyareuncomfortablewithme.
Reconcilethefactthatifyouthink I amanythingworthwhile, intelligentorattractiveorimportant, I wantthemtoreconcilethatwiththefactthat I soundlike I sound I looklikewhat I looklike, what I am, what I amatmakingyouanswerCongress.
