Now, this is the Panasonic tough book, CF 19 Mark three, and it's no ordinary laptop.

This rugged convertible device has been built to last in even the most intensive environments since the time of its launch many years ago.

The tough book has seen a few different redesigns and being released with varying specifications, though it was never the most technologically advanced piece of kit available during these respective product launches.

But it didn't need to be.

The tough book was aimed at an entirely different market, with the launch price of between two and £3000 or closer to $3000.

This machine doesn't sound like it fits in with the usual theme of this channel that there are two reasons why I wanted to take a look at one.

You probably noticed I haven't made a video in, well, what seems like forever, and that's because I've been away from home for the past two weeks.

I first took a trip over to Belgium before making my way back to the UK to attend a wedding in Devon.

Why is this relevant?

I hear you ask.

Well, it was at the beginning of this trip that I managed to drop and break my trusty on the road notebook on Without it, I couldn't do any work.

After getting back, I decided to see what sort of rugged options there were out there in terms of portable computing.

For someone clumsy like myself.

As the slim designs of modern machines seem to be their combined downfall, the price is quickly put me off the idea of actually getting something new.

But it was during my search that I came across this.

I could tell that this probably wouldn't be able to meet my needs video editing wise.

But considering one of these can now be found second hand for less than £100 here in the UK, as well as pretty cheap in some other countries, too, it may be attempting by or seem like one for someone who wants an affordable, everyday machine capable of withstanding slightly rougher usage, even if it can't handle the CPU intensive tasks that I had planned for it.

I'm betting there are a lot of people out there who would appreciate a tough and now affordable system like this one, but does it actually makes sense as an everyday consumer to buy one of these.

Well, first of all, let's dive deeper into the aesthetics.

At just over two inches thick, this magnesium alloy based beast sounds pretty heavy, but two kilos.

It's lighter than my old alien, where M 14 ex gaming machine I tested a while, but and comes as part of an overall smaller package with a handy carry strap.

It doesn't feel uncomfortable clunky to walk around with.

You'll notice that all the parts are covered by plastic tabs to or at least they all would have been, because this meets both I p 65 em I.

O S t d 8 10 standards.

That means it's totally protected against dirt, grit and dust, as well as one meter drops.

And you could probably leave it outside in a light shower, or maybe even use it in the shower.

The reason it features such heavy duty protection is because this is a machine once used by the U.

S.

Military on one that was also integrated into some UK police vehicles.

While there's very little chance that this laptop in my hands will ever be exposed to the conditions that a soldier could have faced.

It does mean that the everyday consumer who might be tempted by one of these can be pretty sure that they won't end up breaking it in everyday use.

I should also mention that a previous Esser to the C F 19 here, the C F M 34 even stopped a bullet once.

So yeah, these dense machines are pretty tough.

We will be testing its strength further a little later on, though.

If you want an affordable used laptop that you probably can't break, then what could be more perfect?

But let's talk about usability.

I've been using this one as my primary system for nearly two days now, and my experience has been mixed.

The 10.1 inch 1024 by 768 display isn't the best as you can imagine, but it is a touch screen, and it's a good job because the trackpad does require a bit of extra pressure applied to it as you drag the curse around the screen.

This could be due to its past life, so it's probably safe to assume all older, tough books may feel similar.

to use the CF 19 doesn't just withstand heavy handling.

It requires and encourages it to some extent.

But don't forget that they were never intended originally for the mass market in order to navigate the aforementioned touch screen.

There would have originally been a stylist included here, but a delicate precision tool, like a pen or pencil, should make a delightful replacement.

Your finger will also suffice, though I can't help but feel a hammer would look more at home being used with this hardy bit of kit.

If you'd rather use it as a tablet, then that's also doable, thanks to the center hinge that unlocks the rotational mechanism.

Using it this way, we'll be down to personal preference.

But in my opinion, I'd rather keep it in traditional laptop mode.

Even if this small keyboard and odd, nonstandard key may take some getting used to be on the chassis and inside the case, you'll find a modest court to do.

Oh, you 9300 clocked at 1.2 gigahertz.

This to core CPU, launched in late 2000 and eight, and features attend what TDP.

In terms of processing power, it's weaker than a single course Celeron G for 60 which is more modern but was the weakest CPU that I could find and therefore use as a comparison.

It feels OK, though.

In everyday performance, which may be in part down to the four gigs of DDR.

To some older models would have only had half of that, and instead of Window, seven would've shipped with Windows X p.

This one originally came with 32 bit windows, but I upgraded it to the 64 bit version just to ensure wider compatibility with programs and software, something I would definitely advise should the CPU allow it.

The graphics are, unfortunately onboard Intel, GM A.

So games will be limited to older classics, which is by no means a bad thing.

After nearly two hours of usage of the battery was drained.

But I was surprised it lasted that long have used more modern, albeit used laptops that have run out quicker during constant usage and multi tasking, especially little netbooks like this.

The system also remained very quiet, thanks to the family's heat pipe design.

After all, it makes no sense using fans to draw air.

If you're in a super dusty environment, with a laptop that's apparently dust proof.

A laptop that runs quiet will always score bonus points with May, so I touched on performance just now.

But let's talk about how it handled some more CPU intensive tasks.

I don't know what it is about the tough book, but it actually handled Premiere Pro really well.

The older, pretty weak process.

I should have struggled a lot more, but I was able to edit and render a short clip without any issue.

It was a suspiciously smooth experience, in fact, and even opening the program, which is installed on the stock 500 gigabyte shockproof H d.

Felt pretty snappy.

So actually, really, like using the tough book.

The things I like about it include the fact that it's very hard.

It's pretty hard to destroy, although we will be testing that out in a couple of minutes time.

And I also like the fact that it runs pretty quiet.

A lot of older netbooks I've used or notebooks wherever you want to call them small ones like that usually get pretty loud when they're under any sort of strain.

I used to have a little ace, a machine that once you have used it for, say, half an hour an hour, the fan would get so loud that you just wanted to turn it off and walk away.

So it's nice having a machine that stays, well, pretty much silent Under such circumstances, it's also surprisingly faster than I thought it would be.

As I mentioned before, firing at Premiere Pro was really not that much of a bad experience.

I was able to edit a short clip with relative ease.

That will be a few moments of slowdown.

Azur was.

Imagine it was over all better than I initially anticipated.

I mean, if I'm comparing it to other little older notebooks that feature similar specs on the market, I'd rather have the tough book because you do have that added sof sturdiness to it, and the fact that you could walk along, drop it and it wouldn't care.

You know, I think what I paid for it, although it waas cheaper than what you can find them for in some places, it isn't exactly the best deal in the world.

You are still paying for that Panasonic tough book name on, Of course, the legacy that it leaves in the world of computing as well, but I think I'm pretty happy with it.

I think it's a good machine.

It's certainly unique and interesting, and you'll have no worries about breaking it now, though, we must really put that to the test because it's time to check out a couple of perhaps far fetched scenarios to see how strong this thing is.

So you've gone to the outside freezer to get us a couple of steaks, but I'll know you've left your laptop inside the freezer accidentally.

Easy thing to do.

Happens to assault cannot withstand such low temperatures.

So as you can see, after we took out the freezer, it was indeed working perfectly fine, if not a little bit cold.

But what if you don't get it?

Call in the freezer.

What if it happens to fall under your car and that car happens to be a Land Rover discovery weighing over two tons?

Can it survive such an impact?

Well, let's take a look.

Oh, that noise didn't really sound too great from inside the Land Rover either, as Thea laptop sort of just got mashed into the stones.

But it's amount of truth has it survived the two and 1/2 ton crushing experience opening up, huh?

Oh, no.

We've lost a few bits.

As you can see, there's a few bits of plastic come off here off metal, Should I say Oh, you could say we've got a dent here.

Where that's a stone has been pushed into the underside.

A lot marks here, although it's hard to distinguish what was there.

Ready.

Um, I think this has taken the brunt of the force.

This new hat hinge part here, which is now pretty sharp.

That doesn't matter, because come on, come on.

Yes, yes, I guess it's pretty tough after all.

And there we go.
