If you got a whiff of maple syrup or lemon and sugar wafting through the air today it's
probably because millions of people around the world were tucking into a tasty stack
of pancakes! But it's not just because they were hungry there's actually a lot more to
it and it's all to do with Easter.
So guys what's with the pancakes??
Well today's Shrove Tuesday and it's a Christian tradition to eat pancakes.
Mmm they look pretty yummy don't they! So why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?
Well it's the beginning of Lent so we take all the rich foods from our house such as
eggs, butter, milk and all sorts of food like that and make pancakes.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. That's when Christians sacrifice something
to kind of copy the sacrifice Jesus made. It goes for 40 days up until Easter Sunday.
Historians say Shrove Tuesday's been around for centuries, although it's changed a little
bit since those days!
It's usually food but it could be social media or something fun they like to do.
If you guys had to give anything up for lent what would you give up?
Probably electronics. Chocolate.
So, today means people can use up the foods that might not be allowed during Lent, while
also practising something that's important to their religion. Plus these things also
make a pretty delicious recess!
The best thing about pancakes is the toppings! Some of my favourites are jam and strawberries.
Mmm me too. Now if you'll excuse us we've got some eating to do. Let's tuck in!
