  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 185. The phrase today is to hunker

  • down. Okay. We actually have four meanings and four

  • uses for hunker down today. So let's look at the first one. To sit on one's

  • heels with knees bent forward. Basically it's the same idea like to squat. Like

  • what a catcher does in baseball. That sort of a position. So sometimes in your

  • life you may have to get in that position for certain reasons. Okay. So

  • let's look at the example here. I had to hunker down to tie that child's shoe.

  • Well, that could be one reason you do it. In Asia, a lot of times they have a

  • lot of squat toilet, so you may have to hunker down low just to you know, do your

  • business. Or number two here. We say to hold stubbornly on to some position. Even

  • though, they are unable to produce one shred, meaning one little piece of

  • evidence, they are hunkering down on their accusation. So maybe they're

  • accusing somebody of something and even though they're trying really hard to

  • find evidence they can't find any evidence. So they are ... they continue

  • to hunker down. They don't want to give up on this accusation. Okay. Number three

  • here. To seek refuge or take shelter. Okay. If you get caught in a blizzard. You know,

  • it's a really bad windy snowstorm. You may have to hunker down for a few days.

  • And maybe you get trapped in a house or a building and can't do anything just stay

  • there for a few days until things clear. You have to hunker down. All right. Number

  • four here. To concentrate and apply oneself more seriously. Okay. I decided to

  • hunker down and study for 10 hours straight in the library, so I could get a

  • good score on that test. So you know, you you're focusing more. You're trying to

  • get more serious. You really got to hunker down on your studies. So we hear that one a

  • lot. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye bye.
