  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Prepositional Phrase number 8. The prepositional phrase

  • today is above the law. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If we say that

  • someone thinks he or she is above the law, it means that person believes that

  • they do not have to obey the law. He or she believes that they are too important

  • or of a higher rank or status that laws do not apply to them or that he or she

  • is of a protected class, so that they won't be punished. Okay. Let's continue.

  • Remember "above" can mean someone or something is of a higher standard or

  • considered more valuable or more important. So they think that you know,

  • they're above the law. The law cannot touch them. That's what they think in

  • that sense. That's what we mean if we say that somebody thinks they're above the

  • law or he considers himself to be above the law. Or sometimes we say nobody

  • should be above the law. You often hear it used that way. So let's just look at

  • three examples we have here. Number one. Because he is the son of a powerful

  • politician, he thinks he's above the law. Nobody will dare to punish him. Okay. Number

  • two. A lot of politicians will commit crimes because they believe they are

  • from a protected class. Nobody should be considered above the law. Okay And number

  • three. You could say he is a dictator. He knows he is above the law. If you're a

  • dictator you might know. No one would dare to challenge or even say anything

  • to him. Yeah. You know. In some countries where there were dictators a lot of them

  • got away with whatever they wanted to do. Okay, Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's

  • clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
