  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 268. The idiom today is down with

  • someone or something. Okay. We have three meanings here and each meaning I'll give

  • two examples with. All right. So let's look at the first meaning. If someone ís ... if

  • someone says down with someone or something, he or she does not like them

  • and wants them to cease meaning like stop, fail or be removed. Get rid of them.

  • All right. So let's look at a couple of examples. The first example here says the

  • protesters yelled " down with GMO foods. " So maybe it was a protest about GMO foods.

  • All right or number two. During the French Revolution, many people shouted down with

  • the king and queen. So again remove them. Get rid of them. So down with them. Okay

  • number two. If someone is down with something , he or she agrees with or

  • approves of someone or something. So they like it. So it is a very different meaning.

  • All right. The first example here says I'm not down with doing anything that is

  • technically illegal. All right. So in this case it means that you don't agree with it.

  • Because remember, it can mean either agree or or approve and you're using in

  • the negative. So if you're saying you're not down with it. It means you don't agree

  • with it. You don't want to do it. So I'm not down with doing anything that is

  • technically illegal. So you don't want to get involved in that. Or number two. You

  • could say I'm down with going to KTV. Yes. Sometimes you say that you would like to

  • do it. You approve of something. You want to do it. I like to sing. So somebody

  • might say I'm down with it. So you you agree with it. You approve of it.

  • All right. The third one here means affected by an illness. So we could also

  • use down with in this sense, So number one here said, she called in sick because she

  • came down with the flu. All right. Yeah. So if

  • somebody you know, comes down with something or they are down with an illness. It

  • basically means that they caught it . They got it. All right.

  • Or number two here. She came down with malaria after her trip to Africa . Yes.

  • Okay. Good. So I hope it's clear. I hope you got it.

  • Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
