字幕列表 影片播放 列印英文字幕 Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 144. The proverb today is to blow one's own horn or blow one's own trumpet. Either one is okay. They have the same meaning. All right. Let's look at the note here. If someone blows one's own horn or trumpet he or she may openly brag about one's skills, abilities, achievements, etc. Okay. Let's continue. The origin is believed to have come from the fact that important men or important people you know, high-level. During the Middle Ages used to have a herald spout stories about how great their accomplishments were. All right. So what is a herald? A herald is here. A herald was someone in the past who delivered official messages or announcements and especially for kings or queens. All right. So what did a herald do ? We say here the, the ... Well not only did he spout all these great stories saying they did this and they did that and they're so great. But the process usually began by blowing a horn which later became a trumpet. So this is where the idea comes from. To blow one's own horn or to blow one's own trumpet because they actually had somebody who had that position that was a herald. Herald also has the meaning of like to praise too. So that person had that position. They went out there announced. He blew the horn (boom , boom, boom , boom ) Something like that, and then said all these great things about these important people, especially royalty. All right. Let's, let's continue. Let's look at the three examples we have here. Example number one. It is better to be modest. Don't blow your own horn. Well somebody you know, giving somebody else advice might say that. Number two. She tries to blow her own horn any chance she gets. Well maybe this person that does this often. And number three. Yes Sometimes you do hear it used this way. I don't mean to my own horn. So sometimes when people they want to say something good about themselves, but they don't want to sound like they're bragging. So sometimes they may say that. Well you know, I'm trying to be modest. I don't mean to blow my own horn but, I once won an award for that. So just letting somebody know. Okay . Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it is clear. I hope it was informative. Thank you for your time. Bye- bye,
