  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 143. The verb phrase today is to put someone

  • up. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. All right. We haven't ... I think we got three

  • meanings today and of course we have several examples to cover it.

  • So let's look at the first one. If someone puts another person up. He or she

  • provides a place to stay or accommodation or to accommodate

  • them temporarily, for a few days or a week or something like that. Or maybe a

  • little longer too. All right. So here, the first two examples

  • would kind of cover this idea. When one of my friends visited I put him up

  • for three days. So you let him stay at your apartment. He didn't have to go get

  • a hotel. He could save some money you know, maybe you provided some other

  • things for him, some meals or something, if you were being nice.

  • Maybe you enjoyed his stay when he came. Maybe you even showed him around. I don't

  • know but you put him up for several days. Well let's look at the second one. I put

  • my cousin up for several months. So it could be that long, until he got on his

  • feet again. All right. Well, maybe ... I don't know maybe he

  • hit hard times. Maybe he lost the job. Maybe he got thrown out of his apartment.

  • And you decided to put him up for a while , for a period of time. You know, as

  • long as you know several months or something like that. That's another way

  • you could put somebody up too. It could be a little longer. It's sometimes.. it's not

  • always very temporary. Number three. All right. Well we got to go back to the, the

  • other meanings up here. So if an organization puts someone up, they

  • suggest someone for an election. All right. That's really the second meaning and so

  • the number three will you know, refer to that one. The democratic party... that's an

  • organization has put up numerous candidates as a possibility for the next

  • election. Yeah. So they've put up a number of them. Of course. In the end it'll just

  • narrow down to just one because you could really only have

  • person in the end. But in the meantime they've put up a number of candidates a

  • number of possibilities to be the person to run for their party. Okay. And the last

  • one we have here is. Yes.A child could be put up for adoption. So a parent could

  • put it up. So let's look at number four. She put her infant up for adoption. Yeah.

  • There could be many reasons for it. Very often it might be somebody that's too

  • young. Maybe if a very young teenage girl got pregnant she might do this. Or maybe

  • somebody else. But if you put it up for adoption. That's another way that we say

  • to put up for . Or to put someone up. So you put the child up for

  • adoption. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's

  • clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
