  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 132. The verb phrase today is to

  • break for. Okay. So you know, we could say somebody broke for something or for

  • someplace. Or somebody broke for like a period of time, like for a reason

  • to rest. So let's look at the first ... Let's look at the notes here. If someone

  • breaks for a particular place he or she starts suddenly running toward it. So

  • they broke for it. For whatever reason they got scared or they have to rush or

  • they had to hurry or it was an emergency. They, they broke for it. They're running

  • towards a particular place. Number two. To stop working or doing something usually

  • temporarily for a particular reason. All right. So those are the two meanings.

  • Let's look at four examples that cover all of these meanings. Number one. When

  • someone yelled fire, Like fire ! Yes. she broke for the exit door in order to

  • escape. Yes. So she started running. Of course , she thought it was an emergency.

  • She started running for the exit door very suddenly. All right. Number two. When

  • that deer spotted a hunter, it broke for the woods. Yeah

  • Deer are very nervous animals. It may not even have to be a hunter. Just someone

  • that they thought look suspicious. They just they may look. They may stare and

  • then they may just suddenly start to run. All right. Let's look at number three here.

  • Let's break for lunch. We will restart in two hours. Yes. This means you know to

  • stop temporarily for a reason. The reason here is lunch. Maybe they're hungry . Maybe

  • they need a rest. Or and the last one. That University broke for spring break.

  • In the US, this is common during the spring semester. They usually have the

  • students take off for about a week in middle of it. That's referred to as

  • spring break, Classes will resume in another week. So after that week is over.

  • You got to get back. You got to start classes again. Okay. Anyway I hope you got
