  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 103. The verb phrase today is

  • to set back. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. We actually have two

  • meanings. Here's the first meaning. If something sets someone back, it costs

  • them a particular amount of money, especially a lot of money. Yeah. Nobody

  • ever says oh that's going to set me back a dollar. Or that's going to set me back 50

  • cents. It would usually be a significant amount of money and we're more likely to

  • use it with that. Okay. And let's look at number two. To set someone or something

  • back can also mean to slow down the progress of something, hinder it, or delay

  • it. Yeah. So something will slow you down, it makes it more difficult to reach your

  • goal. All right. So let's take a look at several examples we have here. Example

  • number one. A new engine will set you back about $1,000. Yes. So again, you're

  • saying a particular amount of money. Like I said it's not too cheap. That's what we

  • use it for. So that's exactly the way we would use it. Number two. Very often somebody

  • will ask it any question. How much is that going to set me back ? You know how

  • much this is going to cost me ? So again especially when you're a little

  • worried about how much it's going to cost you. You might say it this way.. How much

  • is it going to set me back ? You know, it's going to move you back. Going to move back

  • your savings. The amount of money you have. Yes. Okay. Let's look at number three.

  • The damage caused by the hurricane is going to set our project back at least

  • several weeks. All right. This is a one where we're focusing more on delay.

  • Something will delay it. When we're not focusing on the money so much. Even

  • though, it probably cost you some money too here. But probably the delay is

  • more important. So it's going to set you back in time. and the same with the last

  • one. Let's look at the last one. The injury to the star.... like the star of a

  • movie , of the film set the filming back several weeks. Or several months until

  • she recovered. Well whatever her injury was, it may take her several months to

  • fully recover for she could be filming again. So it's

  • going to set that film back several months. It's going to delay that film several

  • months before it's finished. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope

  • it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye- bye.
