Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 108. The proverb today is money
talks. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. If you say that money talks,
it means wealth allows a person to have power and influence if they possess it.
Yeah, definitely. It also refers to the idea that you can
get special treatment or persuade people to do things they might not
ordinarily do. So if you offer them money they're willing to do things that they
probably wouldn't do if you didn't offer them the money. So that's what we mean by
money talks. All right. Let's continue. The original phrase can be traced back to
G. Torriano's Italian proverbs. Remember he
had a book of ... of Italian proverbs. It doesn't mean he created it, but that
might have been one of the first citings, we had of it, So it was already
a proverb at that time. There is also a variant you know, another way that we
sometimes say it . There's also a variant of this phrase, money talks and bullshit
walks. Okay. So you might want to be careful with
that one because of course it has the word bullshit in it. And some people will
find that a little offensive. But you know it's understandable you can
understand. So money talks means money makes people do things.
Bullshit is just a lot of talk and if that's all you offer is just a lot of
talk maybe somebody just might walk away. iI's money is the thing that makes them
you know, that influences them. That's that's the thing that is usually
the final thing . that the defining factor that makes somebody decide to do
something or not do something. That's kind of what this proverb is telling you.
All right. Let's continue. Let's give several examples here. Example number one.
If you want a special table with a beautiful view at that high-class
restaurant just slip the maitre d a big tip. Yeah. Now remember of course you know
we've seen this in the movies all the time. A Maitre D' is usually the
headwaiter at these really high-class restaurants and we always see this in
the movies where they tried to give a big tip to get a better table. Why ?
Because well money talks just like we say you know, money talks. So you give
them the tip and it makes things happen. All right. Let's look at number
two. Companies often make large donations to politicians while they are running
for office in order to buy influence because money talks. Yes.
You know we've often seen statistics about this. I've seen politicians
actually admit that they spend about 50 percent of their time making phone calls
to get more donations for the next time they are running. You know, we all think
that they're spending all this time writing laws and arguing about laws, but
actually more than 50% of the time they're trying to get more money. And
when they get that money that usually those companies they want some favors
for it. So this is a this is one of the best examples of money talks. All right.
Let's look at number three here. I you want that superstar player to sign with
your team, you are going to have to outbid the competitors. Yeah. So maybe
it's a free agent and you know, maybe what is the again the final deciding
factor for him is probably more money than anything else. That's the way it is
done. Money talks. So anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's
clear. Thank you for your time. Bye bye.
