  • Hi everyone, it's Paola, so I am back with another new video, and it's a new year, it's 2019,

  • hello ladies, let's get this bread, am I right?

  • Yeah, so I'm ready to go. I'm feeling very positive about the new year and I have a lot of cool things coming up,

  • well, one cool thing coming up that's set in stone. But a lot of other things will be happening this year,

  • I'm making them happen, and I'm just feeling really good, and

  • speaking of that,

  • I thought I would do an updated

  • portfolio video because my last portfolio was a student

  • portfolio video and a lot of people really liked it, and I got a lot of good responses about it,

  • but it's also kind of outdated now because I'm not a student anymore, I've graduated in the last year,

  • so now I am a professional woman, and currently I'm looking for a job. I'm starting the job hunt and

  • hopefully I'll be moving, and

  • there's just a lot of changes that hopefully will be coming in 2019. And so the portfolio is

  • definitely a main part of it because I'll be using it to apply to jobs, and if that's you right now

  • this might be really helpful, and if you are a student this could be helpful,

  • so this can be helpful for so many different people who are

  • into Graphic Design, or if you're just nosy like I would be and watch videos like this and you're like,

  • "what do other graphic designers do?"

  • Then this video will be interesting hopefully. So let's just talk about my new,

  • professional portfolio.

  • In my last video

  • I had a printed out portfolio book, and it was a nice presentation, it was

  • nice and put together, and right now I don't have anything nice and put together,

  • I do have a PDF of my portfolio and I do have a digital version on my

  • website, and that's basically what I'm working with now. I don't have any printed content,

  • but I haven't really had any

  • interviews or anything yet. I've just started, and

  • we'll get there when we get there!

  • But right now this is just a look at my portfolio, and a lot of people,

  • that are in the job market,

  • they are looking at your digital portfolio and that's really what matters. They're not

  • asking you to bring in something right away or send them something right away, which you can do,

  • you can totally do that. But you know when you apply to a job they ask you to link or

  • upload your portfolio here. So they're wanting to see a digital format when you first apply to a job.

  • So that's what I'm doing right now, and yeah.

  • So the first thing I have in my portfolio is my business card,

  • and I have my business card in here because it shows that I have built my own brand, and it showcases

  • the logo that I've done, and the visual aesthetic of my brand and what I do as a freelance designer,

  • but also as a youtuber and blogger. So that is what I've presented here,

  • it has my colors, and I also have a

  • business card video if you're interested in learning how to make a business card and what goes into it,

  • I will link it in the description.

  • So yeah, that is my first thing, it's all about me,

  • but I think it works for showcasing what I do.

  • Along the same lines, I also mentioned this in my business card video, was a

  • client work business card, and branding material. So this was for a client, it was actually for my mother, but she is my client.

  • And it shows

  • another way to brand and another style that I've done because it wasn't my style, but it was for the client, and

  • then I also did mock-ups, if she were selling a bag, I thought that would be a cool way to

  • to showcase different styles that are not particularly

  • my exact style, but I've incorporated my design style into something for someone else. Does that make sense?

  • I'm pretty sure I mentioned this project in my student portfolio video, but if you're just watching this one that's fine, I did a

  • redesign of American Ballet Theatre,

  • so the logo and a promo booklet using their photos, and it was a student project so that was

  • something that I was debating taking into my professional portfolio,

  • but it still really works because a lot of recruiters, when they're looking for graphic designers

  • they are looking to see what kind of creative outlets you have,

  • what kind of projects you do,

  • and these redesign projects, sort of these "fake" things, that aren't really real but it's kind of your

  • imagination of

  • something completely rebranded, something completely different,

  • it's a really cool thing to have in your portfolio

  • because it shows that you could do something that is already fine and make it your own or make it even cooler,

  • that somebody didn't even know it could be cooler. So I think it is really cool to have aspects in your portfolio

  • that are redesigned, reimagined,

  • "fake" things, like say that you wanted to recreate a magazine that was already published,

  • it already looks a certain way, and you recreated the whole thing.

  • You used a photo that was of a celebrity, and you mixed in some different layout options,

  • some different fonts that they usually don't use, a whole different logo for their company...

  • It could just be really interesting to show what you could do with something that already exists.

  • Next I included my

  • Colombia travel guide that I just completed, and I also have the video on that where I talk about layout design

  • so if you want to see that

  • I'm really proud of that one.

  • It took a while and I am really proud of my Travel Guide.

  • So I decided to include it of course and show some more layout

  • work and book work that I've done,

  • I feel like variety is definitely important.

  • And I definitely mentioned this one in my student portfolio video

  • but I kept it in because it's still one of my favorite projects that I've done. I'm so proud of it.

  • It is my tactile

  • typography project where I used chewed up bubblegum to create an alphabet and sentences and I love it,

  • I'm so proud of it. And I think it's very important to show

  • typography in your portfolio, even if it's really weird because I'm really weird and I need to show my personality

  • you know what I'm saying?

  • I also have another example of layout design in my professional portfolio,

  • so I have a magazine that I created and designed, and if you're thinking like, "oh my god, should I have this much stuff"

  • "that's layout design in my portfolio? I don't know. What am I doing?"

  • Don't worry. [laughs]

  • Do what you do best. So for me

  • what I'm looking for in a job is something where I can do a lot of layout work, and I love

  • magazines and that's just my inspiration.

  • So if you have a different inspiration or a different passion in graphic design

  • totally go for that. And even if you're not doing graphic design, if you just want help setting up a portfolio as an artist

  • don't stress about what I have in here, do what really works for you and what kind of job you want.

  • So I also have a logo that I created for my sister. She had a youtube show in the works

  • I actually don't know what's happening with that. I need to ask her. No shade no tea but like, where is it?

  • Uh, but yeah, I included her logo that I created and I did little mock-ups with that, too.

  • I will link some resources below for websites where you can do mock-ups and add your own designs.

  • It usually is a download and it opens a Photoshop file, and it's really easy to work with if you know the program.

  • So definitely I will link that in the description if you need.

  • And I definitely mentioned this in my last portfolio video but I have again included it in my new professional one,

  • it is my typeface that I created, so I created sort of an art deco style

  • display typeface, a working typeface, an alphabet. So that shows a lot of skill there

  • even if it's not everyone's taste because it is kind of a weird typeface,

  • it's still a little strange to me when I look at it. I still question it, but I think that's good.

  • I think it's good that I'm still like,

  • pushing myself, you know? So this typeface is definitely going to stay in my portfolio

  • while I'm applying to jobs because

  • people want to see really good typography, a lot of job descriptions that I look through say "we want strong

  • typography skills" and maybe that's just the jobs

  • I'm looking for but if you're a graphic designer

  • you definitely have to know what you're doing when it comes to Type. And I think this

  • showcases that I know what I'm doing with Type, especially because

  • I'm weird and I'm telling you I have to show my personality in my portfolio!

  • It's like crucial! Or else who am I? You know, who am I as a designer? So

  • definitely definitely important to me.

  • And the last thing that I have in my professional

  • portfolio that I'm

  • going out for jobs with is

  • Type in motion and

  • video design, I'm not really sure how to describe it. But I applied for a job that was

  • specifically saying, "you need to have text motion in your portfolio", and I thought, ok

  • well, I should probably have that in my portfolio all the time,

  • not just for this job, because

  • I've been working with After Effects lately and I've done a lot of video work where I have all these

  • design elements that are sort of animated,

  • so I decided to work with a little bit of animation, create something nice. So I animated something

  • that was my own handwriting where I wrote "Thank You" and

  • then I incorporated some other design aspects from videos where I have done motion design.

  • So that's just something I'll be adding to as I create, and it will live on my website, and I think that is really cool,

  • obviously I can't print motion design and show people face to face

  • so it's something that they'll have to see online,

  • and I just think it's a cool thing to have, and it shows another skill that I could bring to a potential employer.

  • So I hope you enjoyed looking at my

  • portfolio, my new professional portfolio.

  • If you have never seen my channel before please subscribe

  • if you're not subscribed already. And if you like this video give it a thumbs up.

  • I am probably one of the only people on YouTube who is doing Graphic Design and art-related videos in this way.

  • Well, maybe not all art. I don't want to speak for anybody or step on anyone's toes.

  • But I feel like I'm putting myself out there as a

  • kind of relatable way to talk about Graphic Design, and there's not a lot of female-centered Graphic Design videos online

  • there's just a few girls who I follow and they have really cool channels, and I'd like to be up there with them,

  • you know, so I

  • am so grateful for all of you that watch this channel!

  • Happy new year, and I will see you in my next one. Bye!

  • I'm gonna take a look at my portfolio cuz I don't even remember what I have in here. What the heck?
