  • What's going on everybody?

  • My name is Halley O'Brien and if you've never been

  • skiing before you're in the right place.

  • We've got some basic tips and tricks for you

  • this part two in a three part series and in this video

  • we're going to cover the following things:

  • Your first movements on a flat snow surface

  • Sidestepping and duck walking

  • and how to get up if you happen to get very

  • well acquainted with the ground.

  • So I'm going to throw it over to Eric Lipton of SnowOperating

  • and the Professional Ski Instructors of America. Eric take it away.

  • Now that you're clicked into your skis let's talk about how to get around on the snow.

  • With your shins on the front of your boots,

  • practice pushing yourself around on the flats.

  • This is a great way to get from point A to point B

  • and is your first experience gliding on snow.

  • So we talked about moving around on the flats

  • but let's say you're on a little bit of a hill. Like, for instance, you're

  • skiing and you drop a ski pole and you have to go up and get it,

  • there's a few ways to do that.

  • The first way is sidestepping.

  • Put your skis parallel and across the hill.

  • Tip your knees up hill and dig your edges in.

  • From there just take small steps sideways.

  • The next way is called herring bone or duck walk.

  • Make a v-shape with the tails of your skis closer together than the tips.

  • Flex your ankles forward and sink your knees inward.

  • From this position you can walk around almost anywhere.

  • Just make sure the tails of your skis don't cross.

  • if you fall down there are three ways to get up the first way is to put your skis

  • parallel and across the hill so they're beneath you and you're in a seated

  • position with your weight on your hip start to stand up while walking your

  • hands in a circle toward the front to your skis a second way to get up if you

  • fall is to roll onto your belly and lift your skis up in the air behind you now I

  • know this looks silly but trust me it works

  • set your skis down so that your ski tips are pointed across the hill now just do

  • a push up first onto your knees and then onto your feet from here step your skis

  • across the hill and off you go as a last resort just click one ski off

  • alright guys this is the end of part two congratulations we have part one and

  • three linked in the description below so definitely check those out if you

  • haven't done so already obviously there's so much to experience and enjoy

  • when it comes to skiing so when you head out to the mountain for the first time

  • link up with a ski school professional take a lesson and have some fun I'm

  • Hallie O'Brien thanks so much for watching and I will see you in the next
