This place looks really unique!

This area is composed largely of mudstone.

這是泥岩的地質

Because the rock formation is relatively young, there is little mixture between sedimentary layers.

因為地質年輕所以不容易交結在一起

This kind of geological shape

如此獨特的地形

actually only exists in 3 different places around the world,

其實世界上只有三個地方找得到

and Taiwan has the largest area of them all.

而臺灣是總面積最大的地區

So what's special about this rock is that

這種泥岩特別的是

under sunlight it's actually very hot so it's hard for the water to penetrate through.

在陽光下會很燙 水難以滲透

That's why there aren't a lot of plants here.

所以這裡的植物比較稀少

But during rainfall season, it gets really sticky and hard to walk on.

但到了雨季 泥岩就會變很黏 難以行動

That's something that's very interesting.

實在非常有趣

It is hard to plant any kind of seed here.

這裡很難種植任何東西

And the reason why you still see trees here is because

但你仍然看得到一些樹

they specifically transported seeds and soil from other places.

因為它們是特別從其他地方運來的種子及土壤

And using high pressure to stick the seeds into the soil here.

That's why you see trees standing here right now.

Here you can see a tree that's still alive and a tree that has died.

And the reason is that the died tree was planted here as a whole.

It was stuck into the soil

and it didn't adapt well to the soil here and that's why it died.

And now only one tree is standing.

Staking and Wattling Method

To conserve the soil, this is one of the techniques they use.

這是水土保持的其中一個方法

So you see here there are wooden fences actually just standing there.

可以看到那邊的木柵欄

This keeps the soil all together, consolidated here.

Even though it's harder to grow plants on this kind of soil,

即使這種土壤難以種植

if you put in effort you can still make it happen

只要付出努力依然可以辦得到!

So as this area of green trees here,

they were planted 15 years ago,

and just in this short period of 15 years,

而短短十五年內

these trees have grown to become so green and wonderful.

to promote it to the entire country.

This area is transformed into an area showing different ideas behind water conservation.

這個區域是用來觀察土壤沖蝕情況 觀察水土保持

This is a live demonstration of how water is conserved in this soil.

這裡示範了水土保持的方法

So here you see the soil directly absorbing water.

這一區的土壤直接吸收水分

So you don't see a lot of grass here

因此草地不易在此生長

and all the water flows really really fast into the pipe on the bottom.

水源直接快速流入底下的水管

Whereas here you see tall grass actually preserves water well,

但這一區卻可以看見高度及膝的草地 因為它們很會吸水

so the soil can absorb water for a longer period of time.

土壤可以保存水的時間較久

Therefore they grow better and greener.

因此生長較茂密

It's the same concept for the tires over there.

那一區的輪胎也是相同的道理

Tires there are also used to absorb and conserve water.

用輪胎來吸收和儲存水分

This one right here is a water pavilion in the middle of the lake

這座湖中央的涼亭

and this is one of the landmarks of Longci District.

是龍崎嶇的景點

And what's special is that it is literally in the middle of the lake.

最特別的是 它就建在湖中央

When the water level rises up to here or above,

當水位升高到這裡 或甚至更高時

Water comes over this barricade and into the drain right here,

水就會流過這個石頭圍欄 進入水溝

so it looks like it's flowing inside but you will not drown.

看起來好像會淹沒涼亭 但其實並不會沉下去

Principal Chen told me this water level right now is low,

陳校長告訴我 現在的水位偏低

and during raining season or typhoon season,

當遇到雨季或颱風

water will rise up to be much higher

水位會大幅升高

and the water will be less muddy and more transparent,

水裡的泥巴也會變得較少 水質更透明

so you can see a perfect reflection of these mud mountains right here.

甚至還能看見山丘在水中的倒影

But right now it's already very sunny and beautiful.

但幸運的是 今天天氣已經很好了

Before I came here today,

I thought later I'm going to see lots of mud slides

我以為只會看到很多泥巴地形

or see this really unique geographical badlands.

But actually after my talk with Principal Chen,

And how the locals here have adapted to the harsh environment.

For example, the soil here is very hard to grow plants.

It is all green and full of trees and lively grass.
