Skill number one is speaking up. One of the things you would want to be sure to do 你會想養成的好習慣之一 is whether you like it or not, 不管你喜歡與否, get very comfortable, it may take awhile, 雖然可能需要些時間,但你能夠自在地 with public speaking for example. I mean, that's an asset that will last you 50 or 60 years 這是一項能保值五十至六十年的資產 and it's a liability if you don't like doing it 但你如果不願意去做,它就成了負債 or are uncomfortable doing it that will also last you 若你做的當下並不感到自在,它依然能保值 50 or 60 years and it's a necessary skill. Skill number two is being honest with yourself. One of the big things that all startups do is they lie 新創企業家其中一個很大的毛病 to themselves, over and over and over. No it's not and the reason it's not is because 但這都不是原因, whoever it is you're competing with, 因為不管你和誰在競爭, it's not like they're ignoring you. It's not like, oh my goodness, 也不是說,我的天啊, this guy just started on Shopify in the startup competition 這傢伙在 Shopify 的新創企業競賽中剛起步 and he's doing a million dollars this year, 而他光是今年就賺進了一百萬, woe is me, I might as well close up the doors. 我的命好苦啊,倒不如放棄算了 What are they doing? I'm going to copy what they're doing and now you've got to 我得效法他們的方式,所以你必須 stay ahead and so, you know, you've got to be 隨時保持領先,而且你也要 very careful as a entrepreneur to be brutally honest 非常謹慎,身為創業家,要能夠絕對誠實地 with yourself and those are some of the things 面對自己,而那些事情都是 that you'll hear from me as a mentor. That know what you know, know what you don't know, 知你所知,亦知你所不知, but you got to know your business better than anybody. Skill number three is having confidence. I don't know if you'd agree with me on this, 不知道你是否也同意我的觀點, but in many ways, one of the key factors 但就許多方面來說,其中的關鍵因素在於 to legendary success isn't your natural ability. It's not whether you have the right product, 並不是你是否擁有了對的產品, it's not whether you're in the right field, 是否處在你適合的專業領域, it's not whether you've had a blessed background. It's not whether you have the right IQ. I want you to really think about and deconstruct 我要你好好地思考,並試著去解析 and play with maybe later tonight in your journal. I want you to deconstruct this idea of confidence 我要你去解析「自信」這個概念 and it seems like a very simple work but just think about 雖然看似簡單,但仔細想想 it in your own life. When you have confidence or we could even call it fire, 當你擁有自信,或是我們也稱之為熱情, when you have that fire within you, that confidence, 當你懷著滿腔的熱情,那樣的自信, that interior bravery, 那種由心而發的勇氣, you almost have this power to do whatever it takes 幾乎要擁有一股力量,讓你無論如何 to get your brave vision done. You see, in this world, it's not about, in many ways, 在這個世界上,就許多方面來說, your strategy and your business or your ability 和你的行事策略、事業,或是能力都無關 in your life, it's about this thing called confidence 在你人生中,一切只取決於「自信」 and we've all had these times in our lives when we are 在我們生命中,都曾經有過那種 full of confidence and what other people see as a problem, 充滿自信的時刻,就算其他人認為那是個麻煩, we simply do see as an opportunity. Other people see it as a stumbling block or a wall 其他人視它為一顆絆腳石或是一座城牆 and we see it as a stepping stone or this solution. So confidence is simply something that you really 所以「自信」簡單來說就是個會讓你 want to wire in. Confidence is something you really want to develop, 你會想要好好地去開發你的自信 confidence is a practice, confidence is a muscle 自信需要訓練,因為自信也是肌肉 and like any muscle, the more you focus on it 就像身體其他肌肉一樣,你越是對它集中火力 and practice it and train it, the stronger your confidence 練習它、訓練它,你的自信心就會越強大 is going to grow and I just have to say it again. When you are at a place in your life, 當你走到了人生中一個定點, when there is ongoing, steady stream of confidence 有著毫無間斷、源源不絕的自信 moving through your mindset, moving though your heartset, 湧進你的心靈,流進你的心窩, you do the heroic in your business 讓你在事業上英勇揮毫 and you achieve the remarkable in your life. Nelson Mandela is a particularly special case study 前南非總統曼德拉是個非常特別的研究案例 in the leadership world because he is universally regarded 在領導界中,他已被全宇宙公認為一位 as a great leader. You can take other personalities and depending on the nation 就其他頗具名望的人來說,根據你所在的國家 you go to, we have different opinions about other 我們可能對這些名人持有不同的評價 personalities but Nelson Mandela, across the world, 但對於曼德拉而言,世界上的任何角落, is universally regarded as a great leader. He was actually the son of a tribal chief 他其實身為部落酋長之子 and he was asked one day, 有一天有人問他, how did you learn to be a great leader? And he responded that he would go with his father 他回答說他都會和他的父親一起出席 to tribal meetings and he remembers two things 參加部落會議,而他從中記下兩件事 when his father would meet with other elders. One, they would always sit in a circle 第一,他們總是圍圈而坐 and two, his father was always the last to speak. You will be told your whole life that you need 你的一生中會經常有人提醒你 to learn to listen. I would say that you need to learn to be the last to speak. I see it in board rooms every day of the week. Even people who consider themselves good leaders who may 甚至連那些自認為自己很好 actually be decent leaders will walk into a room and say, 而的確也是不錯的領導者的人,一進會議室就說, here's the problem, here's what I think, 問題出在這,這就是我的想法, but I'm interested in your opinion, 但我很好奇各位的意見, let's go around the room. 開始輪流提議吧 It's too late. The skill to hold your opinions to yourself until 你能夠保留自己的想法直到 everyone has spoken does two things. One, it gives everybody else the feeling 第一,每一個人都能感受到 that they have been heard. It gives everyone else the ability to feel 而每個人也都有辦法感受到 that they have contributed. And two, you get the benefit of hearing what everybody 第二,好處是你得以在提出個人意見之前 else has to think before you render your opinion. The skill is really to keep your opinions to yourself. If you agree with somebody, don't nod yes. If you disagree with somebody, don't nod no. Simply sit there, take it all in, and the only thing 只消靜靜地坐著,把各種想法聽進去, you're allowed to do is ask questions so that you can 而你唯一能做的就是盡量發問,如此一來 understand what they mean and why they have the opinion 你就能了解他們的意思以及原由 that they have, you must understand from where they 你一定要去了解他們所處的立場 are speaking, why they have the opinion they have, 以及他們給出這些意見的原因, not just what they are saying 不只是他們所說的內容而已 and at the end, you will get your turn. It sounds easy, it's not. Practice being the last to speak. That's what Nelson Mandela did. Skill number five is managing your time. My challenge in our generation is that gradually 在我們這個世代所面臨的挑戰,是漸漸地 through entertainment, through television, through media, 只透過娛樂,藉由電視,經由媒體, through every way possible, we are living in a 憑藉任何一種可能的方式,讓我們生在一個 generation of the dumbing down of ideas 容易將想法簡化的世代 because we have traded effectiveness for busyness. Statistics say, yeah somebody ought to clap on that. We are busier than any other generation we have seen 我們比起其他世代的人更為忙碌 in the last three to 400 years. We are so busy, we are busier than a one armed 我們真的太忙了,甚至比單手貼壁紙的工人還忙 (俗諺意指工作繁忙) wallpaper hanger, we're just busy, you'll get it later, 我們就是這麼忙,你待會就懂了, don't worry about it, it'll hit you in a minute. We are just as busy as we can be and we think 我們正是如此忙碌,而我們認為 because we're busy, we're effective. But I want you to challenge your schedule for a minute 但我想給你一個挑戰,替自己安排一分鐘的時間 and ask yourself, are you really being effective 捫心自問,你做事是真的有效率嗎? or is your life cluttered with all kinds of stuff 還是你的人生只是塞滿了各式各樣的事物 that demands you and drains you and taxes you 向你索求,對你壓榨,給你壓力 and stops you from being your highest and best self 阻撓你登上人生巔峰,而無法成為最好的自己, and are you substituting busyness and all the chaos 你是否被忙碌中的混亂取代了 that goes along with busyness from being effective? Let me tell you, a bunch of scientists got together, 有一群科學家聚在一起, they begin to do some research and they begin to determine 開始做研究之後,開始相信了 that 80% of the things we do are busy things that we do 我們處理的事情中,80% 是很繁雜 in an area that is not effective, that the average person 卻毫無效率可言的,平均一個人 only spends 20% of their time doing the thing that they 只花了 20% 的時間去做他們 are really gifted, creative at, passionate about, 真正有天賦、能發揮創意,且充滿熱忱, excited to do and the rest of it is all the dismal, 能夠使他們感到興奮的事情,剩下的則全是些沉悶 dumb stuff that we all have to do in order to survive. Just crazy stuff that we're doing. Wonder what would happen if we would go from doing 80% of things that are busy but not effective 80% 繁雜卻又毫無效率 and 20% of the things that are really effective, 以及處理 20% 非常有效率的事情, if we would switch those numbers around and only give 如果我們把數字調換,而只花了 20% of our time to the things that we have to do 我們 20% 的時間去做那些非做不可的事 and 80% of our time to thing that we were 並有 80% 的時間讓我們去完成 created to do. 與生俱來就適合做的事情 (audience applause) (觀眾掌聲) Wonder what would happen to your life. Now think about it a minute, there's a lot of things 現在試想一下,有很多東西 you could take from me and I could make it. You could take my suit, I got another one. You could take my car, I could get another one. You could take my house, I could get another house. But when you take my time, you have taken something from me 但當你拿走了我的時間,代表你從我身上奪走了 that is totally irreplaceable. We take all kinds of questions from money management. We know how to manage our money, we know how to repair 我們知道如何管理金錢,知道怎麼整修 our houses, we're working on our hair and our bodies 我們的房子,我們也會花心思在頭髮和身體上 and all of this kind of stuff. We do everything except the most important thing 但我們卻常常忽略了最重要的一件事 is to value our time. It takes time to be creative. You were meant to be creative. You were created in the likeness and the image 上帝藉著自己的印象和圖像創造了你 of a creator and in that likeness and in that image, 而在祂的印象和圖像中, you have creativity. If you had time, you would be creative 若你有足夠的時間,你就能發揮創造力 but in the absence of time and with busyness 但因為時間的不足,那爭分奪秒的生活 and clutter the ring ring ring, the phone ring, 還夾雜著鈴鈴鈴,此起彼落的電話鈴響, beep, beep, beep. You all got music playing on your phone, all kinds of stuff. No matter kind of song you put on, 不管你用了哪首歌, after awhile you hate to hear it because every time 一陣子之後你就會厭倦了那首歌,因為每一次 you hear that sound you know it's somebody else 你聽到那聲音,就知道有人 wanting something else from you that's taking you away 又有求於你,讓你非得停下手邊那些 from what you are gifted and created to do. So I have this thing that I've been promoting called 一直以來我在推廣的一個活動叫做 No Whining Wednesdays. Wednesday you cannot whine, complain, or criticize. And people are like, well what is whining? Whatever you think it is, don't do it. And every time you do it, 你每做一次, you have to put a quarter in a jar. If you whine about anything, I can't, I'm tired, 如果你抱怨了某些事情,我沒辦法,我累了, why me, why don't you? Every one of them will cost you a quarter. Or complaining, why don't you, why do you always, 或是抱怨說,為什麼你不這麼做,為何你總是, how come you, I am always, they never. Oop, cost you a quarter. Then last week, I had people send me pictures of their 上個禮拜,我要他們寄給我 jars of quarters. (laughs) 我的天啊 (笑聲) What they said to me also was, this was wonderful 但他們卻也告訴我,這是件很美好的事情 because I was never, ever aware of how much whining 因為我從來不曾意識到原來我的抱怨、 and complaining and criticizing I do. I've got mothers doing it with their children. So Wednesday is No Whining Wednesday. We need to practice that. We need to stop whining about what isn't happening, 我們必須停止抱怨那些並未發生的事情, what we don't have, what we can't do, 我們沒有的東西,我們無法做到的事, what somebody didn't do. We got to get it clean in 2014. No whining, no complaining, no criticizing. Skill number seven is staying present in the moment. 技能七:活在當下 Skill number eight, being consistent. Success is not a destination. People always think that oh my god, this person's 人們總想著,我的天啊,這個人 so successful because they've had a successful movie 會如此成功,是因為他們演出了一部賣座的電影 or a successful show but success is a journey. You have to consistently always, always be successful. That's when you're really successful because otherwise 那才叫做你真的很成功, you'll be remembered for your last failure 否則你會因為一次失誤而遺臭萬年 and I've had a few but I just have to compensate for 我過去也曾跌倒過幾次,但我就是 my failure by just getting up and running. The more time you take to sort of mourn it, 你花越多時間在哀悼你的失敗, you're wasting that much more time in being successful. So you just have to perk up, pick yourself up, 所以你得抬起頭,振作起來, dust yourself off and just say what can I do? There's always a solution. You can't expect, people always get mistaken that 你不能去奢望,人們經常產生誤解 just because this year has been what it has been, 因為這一年來經歷了這些事情, it's been because I consistently worked hard 全都歸功於我過去不斷地努力 for about 10 years. So now, I know my job enough to be able 所以現在,我已經夠了解我的工作 to be appreciated for it. But if I hadn't had the last 10 years, I would never have had this year or the year before that. So success is not a destination where you, 所以成功並不是一個目的地, or power is not like okay today you're powerful. You have to consistently be powerful 你必須不斷地維持你的權威和影響力 and consistently be successful and that is a journey. Well, first of all, I prioritize sleep. That means saying no to things you want to do. 這不容易 - [Interviewer] No, it's hard, I think the hardest thing. - [採訪員] 對,這很難,應該是最困難的事了 - Last night, you know, Sheryl Sandberg interviewed me - 昨晚,雪柔.桑德柏格訪問我 at the San Fran Symphony Hall and then I had to sign books 在舊金山交響樂廳堂,然後我還得去簽書 and I would have loved to go and have dinner with her 不過我也很想和她一起共進晚餐 but I went to bed. You know, because if I had gone out to dinner 因為如果我和她外出吃晚餐 and hadn't gotten my at least seven hours sleep that I need 而喪失了我需要至少七個小時的睡眠 and had to get up early to do TV, 卻還得早起做電視節目, I would not be enjoying being here with you now 我現在可能就沒辦法好好地和各位在這裡聊天 and I'm really enjoying it and I'm 100% present 我真的很享受現在,100% 全神貫注於此 and I'm not tired and I hate being tired more than 我不覺得累,而且比起其他事情 I hate anything. And skill number 10 is having empathy. I've thought a lot about the power of empathy. In my work, it's the current that connects me 在我工作中,那就像是一道電流連結了 and my actual pulse to a fictional character 我的現實生命和一個虛構的角色 in a made up story, it allows me to feel pretend feelings 在一個虛構的故事裡,它讓我去感受假想的情感、 and sorrows and imagined pain. In my nervous system is sympathetically wired 我的神經系統在情感感知上是很發達的 and it conducts that current to you 它讓那道電流傳向 sitting in a movie theater 坐在戲院裡的你 and to the woman sitting next to you 以及坐在你身旁的女士 and to her friend so that we all feel that it's happening 還有她的朋友,所以我們都能同時感受 to us at the same time. It's a very mysterious and valuable resource 這是個非常神秘且珍貴的資源 of the human species 對於人類而言 and women, I think, access it most effortlessly. We cry at sad movies, we don't feel we lose face 看到悲劇時我們會哭,我們並不覺得丟臉 or stature or position doing it. We see a news story that enrages us and we write letters 看到讓我們憤恨不平的新聞,我們會寫信陳情 through tears, our hearts pounding. I often used to wonder why human beings developed these 我以前經常好奇為什麼人類會發展出這些 inconvenient and embarrassing responses, 令人尷尬、難為情的反應, this sniffling, choking, wet obstruction. You know, the thing physicians and soldiers and 無論是物理學家、軍人、 stock traders and journalists and fashion models 股票買賣商、記者、時尚模特兒、 and politicians and news commentators 政客、新聞閱評人 and venture capitalists all must suppress in order 還是風險資本家都必須壓抑這樣的情緒 to work most efficiently. 才能夠有效率地辦事 (audience laughing) (觀眾笑聲) I thought what possible value, function could it serve 我思考著它究竟能帶給我們什麼樣的價值或功能 in the Darwinian scheme of you know, 在達爾文的演化論中, survival of the fittest and the strongest 最適及最強者生存 and the most heavily armed. 甚至還有那些加倍武裝的人 (audience laughing) (觀眾笑聲) No seriously, I thought why and how did we evolve 說真的,我思考著我們為何以及如何在演化過程中 with this weak and useless passion in tact 讓這麼脆弱又無用的情緒保留得完好無缺 within the deep heart's core. And the answer as I've formulated it to myself 就我自己演算推導出來的結論是 is that empathy is the engine 同理心就是引擎 that powers all the best in us. It is what civilizes us. It is what connects us. 也是連結起我們的橋樑 - Thank you guys so much for watching. - 非常感謝各位的收看 I hope you enjoyed. I'd love to know what did you think of this video?
