  • hello ladies and gentlemen this is mister Guy. I'm going to talk to you

  • about writing good body paragraphs

  • the body paragraphs are

  • the heart your essay. they carry the message

  • YES, the introduction is important

  • yes the conclusion is important but those body paragraphs

  • are very important. so what we're going to talk about is what makes a good body

  • paragraph and then we're gonna look at

  • examples a good body paragraph that are well developed.

  • okay first good body paragraphs have a clear topic sentence

  • with main points to support the topic sentence

  • sometimes a body paragraph can have two main points

  • and sometimes can have three main points either way

  • there's a topic sentence with two to three main points

  • good body paragraphs

  • have support an explanation for the main points

  • this is very important we make points

  • but then we explain the importance and significance of them.

  • We explain the importance and use

  • connectors to make the paragraph feel together

  • when I say connectors I'm talking about words like firstly, secondly,

  • in addition, moreove. I'm talking about

  • words like and, but, so -- all words that

  • connect our ideas. all right now let's take a look

  • at the basic format

  • basic format is that a body paragraph has a very clear topic sentence

  • I like my topic sentences short sweet

  • and to the point. very direct once we make

  • our topic sentence

  • then we come up with main idea warm and then we

  • explain we support, we give details an explanation

  • We will look at an example paragraph

  • before we look at the example paragraph however

  • you know these words for example are used when we give examples

  • we use words like this means when we explain things

  • when we show affects we use words like as a resul, or so

  • when we show causes we use words like because

  • when we show similarities use words like

  • similarly this is similar to and sometimes we show differences

  • special contrast we use words like in contrast or we say this is different

  • and the point here is that in order to develop

  • our thoughts we need to give examples

  • we need to explain what we mean we need to show affects maybe

  • show causes if it's appropriate show similarities

  • when when it's appropriate and we show differences

  • but the idea is that we don't make

  • a statement without developing it so we're going to do is we're going to look

  • at a paragraph about solar panels

  • I wanna make sure you do know what solar panels are

  • and solar panels are these things that go on top of the roof of a house.

  • group the people's house and many people are using solar panels to

  • people save a lot of electricity by using solar energy

  • and to actually create their own small business

  • so here's a little bit a background about but the paragraph is going to be

  • about

  • now here's a body paragraph and I'm telling you now it's

  • underdeveloped you can look at the word count:

  • its 39 works but let's look at what's good about it for a second

  • first you can see clear topic sentence

  • putting solar panels in your home can help you save money so this whole

  • paragraph is gonna be about solar panels in saving money

  • so I've got first point and I've got

  • a second point so what I've got is a

  • paragraph but it undeveloped

  • it's got two main point look firstly

  • and secondly and that's pretty good

  • but it's not developed so what can we do

  • well we can start adding support an explanation in details

  • let's take a look here's the same paragraph

  • but more developed topic sentence

  • installing solar panels will improve your finances okay so to save you money

  • the green is

  • the first idea but now it's developed a little bit

  • that's what let's look at it firstly

  • it will help you save money and protect us for example

  • many people report saving up to eighty percent their normal electricity bill

  • so we've got a topic sentence we've got .1

  • with development then we've got point2

  • with development secondly many areas have the solar panels setups with family

  • so the family can sell the electric back to the electric company

  • and so there's my second point

  • and then here is the development at that point

  • this means that the electric company but by the energy from you

  • and transfer to their station

  • so I've got two points firstly and secondly

  • I got development for those point

  • and I've got a topic sentence and what's important to understand

  • is that this green part and this red part

  • part 1 and part 2 are important and so is the development for each part

  • the topic sentence the topic sentence says installing solar panels will

  • improve

  • your finances here's the first reason how

  • here's the second reason

  • this is important in terms up to set up a pure

  • now let's look at another paragraph that is

  • more developed

  • k topic sentence installing solar panels will improve your finances

  • okay we know this it will help you save money on their electric bills

  • for example many people report saving up to eighty percent of the normal electricity bill

  • as a result families can put that money in the banks which

  • might help the family pay for college so again here we've got

  • development for point 1 and 2. .1

  • and then development and what we've got here is a

  • healthy paragraph 105 words it's healthy because it has

  • a topic sentence it has .1

  • development point to development

  • .1 development .1 in .1 development is here in the green

  • point2 and 2.2 development is here in the red

  • and that's important now I'm gonna show you

  • in other paragraph that I took from the internet

  • to support the same thing here's a simple example it says my home town is

  • famous for several natural

  • or several amazing natural features so this writer has

  • first

  • right first and this writer has

  • second

  • can now instead of second

  • he used also and then

  • he actually has a third point so he said first

  • also and third to the ideas he has a topic sentence

  • he has a topic sentence he has a first

  • I'm gonna make this a color he has a first

  • he has in also instead of a second

  • that was his choice and he has

  • a third

  • so this writer has three main points first body paragraph

  • but each point is developed

  • so for example first it is noted for the Wheaton River

  • which is very wide in beautiful and then all this

  • is development up the first point

  • first it is noted for their week river which is very wide in beautiful

  • men he gives examples and details in he makes it

  • significant for the reader either side of the river

  • which is a 175 feet wide are many willow trees which have long branches that can

  • move gracefully in the wind

  • in autumn the leaves above the trees fall and cover the river banks in golden

  • snow

  • all this supports the idea and it's beautiful

  • in the writer goes on again says also the other side of town

  • is we can Hill which is unusual because it is very steep

  • so here he's going to discuss. the steepness

  • even though it is steep climb the hill is not dangerous because there are some

  • firm rocks along the side that can be used the stairs

  • there are no trees around the hill so it stands clearly

  • against this kind can be seen for many miles away so again he's giving details

  • for his second point

  • and its third point he said

  • the third amazing feature is the big oak tree

  • now this part is talking about the big oak tree

  • so the idea here is that we we have a topic sentence

  • we have two to three support sentences

  • and development for each support sentence

  • this is critical an important aspect

  • I thought good paragraph that feels together

  • now let's look at some other words used of course first

  • or firstly also

  • third these are connected words these are words that helped give the essay a

  • feeling of connectedness

  • okay other types of important words you can see

  • because and even though

  • and show and and

  • from you know words like and

  • so using using connector works

  • subordinating conjunctions coordinating conjunctions

  • and what we call enumerators firstly secondly

  • thirdly and transition traces in addition

  • also moreover all these come together to make the paragraph

  • feel very connected

  • okay I hope this helps and please

  • if you have any questions ask me
