臺南府城

used to be surrounded by walls on all four sides.

曾經四周都是城牆

And the only way in and out of the city was by the gates.

而出入府城唯一的方法 就是城門

And right now I am at Kuang Fu Campus

而我現在所在的位置是成功大學

of National Cheng Kung University. 光復校區

And next to me is the Lesser East Gate of Tainan Old Town!

小東門的遺跡就在我旁邊呢

When people visit this gate for the first time,

第一次來到小東門

they might wonder

why is the Lesser East Gate next to the Lesser West Gate?

為什麼小東門會在小西門旁邊呢

The Lesser East Gate has been here all of history

其實這裡本來只有小東門

and the Lesser West Gate was moved here in 1968

在1968年 小西門(府前路與西門路交叉口)才搬到這裡

due to urban planning.

由於道路擴建及都更

And right now the two gates stand peacefully next to each other,

如今兩個城門在此並列

forming this interesting juxtaposition.

Today we're going to walk through the East District of Tainan.

It is one of the most liberal, educational,

and cultural areas in Tainan City.

National Cheng Kung University is the top-notch university

boasting the longest history in Tainan.

The sceneries and buildings uplift a cultural

and historical ambience on campus.

The university also owns

the first school-operated museum in Taiwan.

The building of National Cheng Kung University Museum used to serve

成功大學博物館的建築物

as the college's administrative office during Japanese colonization.

前身是日治時期的學校行政中心

This place is full of history

這個地方充滿著歷史

and what's special about this place

而且最特別的地方是

is that each room is a different exhibition.

每個房間都有不同的展覽

So when walking into the different exhibitions,

it's like entering different worlds.

This exhibition is about

the space race of the Soviet Union with the United States

是關於蘇聯及美國之間的太空競賽

and a lot of their developments through this time.

And here behind me,

you can actually see a lot of propaganda back then,

drawn so beautifully and in many different colors, bright colors,

to show their people how much they've achieved.

what life was like back in the days for old Taiwanese.

Here you have different traditional buildings, different furniture,

and even potteries and shrines.

I think it's very interesting to learn about my roots

追尋自己的「根」非常有趣

and also what our ancestors were up to back in the days.

也能更了解祖先們當時的生活

That was an exciting little tour at the museum.

But now I'm feeling very hungry!

Let's go find something to eat.

I am now at this local food stand.

我現在身處一家小吃攤

This place is most famous for their dumplings.

這裡最有名的是它們的水餃

Many people around the area come here just for their dumplings.

附近很多人僅僅為了水餃而來到這裡

And I am so ready to try it!

我準備好嚐鮮了

It's so good!

真的很好吃

It's the best kind of food for this cold, cold winter!

You can taste the green onion

and actually I think there's ginger inside too.

Not far away from National Cheng Kung University

距離成功大學

and behind Tainan Railway Station,

及臺南火車站後面的不遠處

you will encounter this building right here.

This is a very Baroque styled building

這是一座巴洛克式的建築物

with a nicely-organized garden.

配以一個整齊的花園

It was built during the Japanese colonization,

它建於日治時期

and used to be

曾經是當時

the residence of the Japanese Magistrate who ruled Tainan City.

臺南縣知事官邸

The Old Tainan Magistrate Residence was built in 1900.

建於1900年的臺南知事官邸

It was the residence for Chiji,

顧名思義 就是日治時代

the local governor, of Tainan Prefecture during Japanese Rule.

臺南縣知事（即縣長）的住所

When Japanese Imperial Family members came to visit,

當日本皇族來到臺南的時候

it served as the main residence as well.

這裡也是主要的招待所

In 1923,

Prince Hirohito, who was later Emperor Showa,

當時還是皇太子的昭和天皇

has stayed a night here.

曾經在這裡住過一晚

After World War II,

the building served as several government offices.

這裡先後成為許多政府機關用地

It was designated as a municipal historic site in 1998.

In 2011,

after the renovation was completed,

the residence was opened to the public,

and soon became a popular tourist attraction.

Standing here on the second floor balcony,

it's hard to imagine how many royalties

and important people have stood here on the very same spot

Right beside the residence

opens up a totally different small world.

There is an embroidery store which preserves traditional techniques.

Embroidery master Wang Lan-zhen in her seventies

70幾歲的王蘭貞藝師

still takes on the traditional craft

依然傳承著這份

which requires full attention and high technical skills.

How old were you when you first started?

從幾歲開始學這藝術

I started before I was married.

還沒結婚的時候

Since I was only a teenager. I stopped after I got married.

十幾歲開始學 結婚後就沒做了

How much time does it take to finish this?

這(作品)大概花多久時間

My part takes approximately half a month.

我的部分差不多半個月

Half a month.

半個月

So it's about making the cloth more 3D

就是讓它(作品)變得更立體

and more vibrant in colors?

然後色彩更鮮明嗎

After my talk with the craftsmen here,

跟師父們對話後

I learned that her part of the work

我了解到她負責的部分

takes around half a month to complete.

需要大約半個月來完成

And before her part,

而在她的部分之前

actually someone else does all the design and coloring.

另一位師父會先完成設計及上色

And she makes them more 3-D

她讓整個作品變得更立體

so like they're popping out to you.

讓這些圖案栩栩如生

And they're both very modest craftsmen,

師傅們都非常謙虛

and they were telling me that

都告訴我

they don't take any credit in finishing this piece of work.

能完成作品並不是自己的功勞

But actually, this skill takes a lot of patience and dedication.

事實上 這份手藝需要許多耐心

So it's amazing that

令人感到驚喜的是

they've turned this great piece of art work

他們把做出來的作品

into something for the Gods would wear on special occasions.

變成神明在某些場合穿的衣服

That was quite a touching little visit I had in there

能見識到這麼精細的工藝讓我好感動

and I truly do hope that this art of embroidery

真的很希望這項技藝

can continue to live and survive.

可以繼續傳承下去

because there are some beautiful street arts in there for you to enjoy.

Walking in here pretty soon enough,

you will observe that

“deers” are the main theme of this underground passageway,

「鹿」就是這地下道的主題

more specifically, Formosa Sika Deers.

特別是梅花鹿

The reason is that these deers used to be

of great importance to the Shilaya Aboriginal Tribe,

對臺南西拉雅族來說

who resided in Old Tainan City

非常重要

and they also existed in great abundance in this area.

After walking out from our shortcut,

you can really feel the hustle bustle of this city.

But if you listen very carefully,

What's the best part about Tainan?

你認為臺南最棒的是什麼

The best part about Tainan for me is the people.

我最喜歡臺南人

They're friendly, just easy-going and slow.

他們非常友善 親切 而且非常慢活

And slow, really slow.

慢活 真的很慢活

I don't like it fast.

我不喜歡腳步太快

I'm from Berlin.

我是柏林人

Everything is powa-powa-powa.

一切事情都是快快快

But here it's like more relax

但這裡比較能放鬆

and they're not so up and about.

大家不會那麼匆促

And I'm a vegetarian

而且我是素食者

and Tainan is a vegetarian heaven.

臺南是素食者的天堂

You can't find as many vegetarian restaurants

全臺灣的素食餐廳

in all over Taiwan than in Tainan.

加起來都沒有臺南多

Even in small places,

就算是在小鎮內

if you go to Yong Kang somewhere

如果你去永康

there's tons of vegetarian restaurants.

也有非常多家素食餐廳

And I love it!

我太愛這裡了

That's awesome and delicious!

超級棒又很好吃

My main objective is to make people happy

我的目標就是讓人們開心

and when they're happy, I'm happy,

當他們開心時 我也開心

so I'm in a happy place all the time.

所以我可以一直保持在開心的狀態

And really, I meet a lot of interesting people,

而且 我真的碰到很多有趣的人

like I'm meeting you right now.
