Stefanie the English coach here from Englishfulltime.com. 嗨!你們好。我是 Stefanie ,EnglishFullTime.com 網站裡的英語教練。 And, in this video we are going to talk about why idioms aren't nearly as 在這個影片中,我們要來講為什麼俚語不是像你們 important as you think they are. Okay. So first, I just want to say that one of the 想得那麼地重要。所以一開始我想先講的是, most frequently asked questions that people ask me is, Stefanie, how can I 別人最常問我的其中一個問題是: Stefanie ,我要怎麼樣才 learn more idioms, how can I improve my vocabulary by learning more idioms, or 可以學到更多俚語、我要怎麼在學習俚語時同時增進我的英文字彙、或是 I'm struggling to remember all the different idioms that there are in English. 我無法完全記住這些不同的英文俚語, It's so hard. And, I'm over here kind of like why are you guys freaking 這太困難了。不過當下我覺得,你們這些人怎麼會對俚語 out about idioms. And so, I decided, you know, I just need to make a video for 這麼地執著,所以我決定拍攝一個影片, once and for all to kind of just put this whole thing to rest. So, you guys no 讓你們對學習俚語這件事情能夠平常心面對,所以你們大家 longer have to stress out about idioms. Okay. But, first I just want to say that 不需要對俚語感到那麼的有壓力。第一件我想說的事情是, several years ago, when I was teaching English online I had this one student 幾年前我在線上教英文時,我遇到一個學生, who I think was obsessed with learning idioms. And, every day she would come to 我覺得她非常熱衷於學習俚語,她每天上課大概 class with literally like 20 new idioms in her vocabulary. And so, when she would 都會先學會 20 個新俚語,然後在課程中 speak. It just sounded so unnatural, she would just be like today I feel like a 運用。但聽起來不是很自然。像是她會說:今天我一大早 sack of potatoes because I woke up at the crack of dawn. But, that's because the 就起床了,我覺得我提不起勁,但那是 apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And, I would just be like holy cow what what 因為事出必有因囉!我一聽到她那樣說,就非常地驚訝,妳在 are you saying, why don't you just use normal words to say what you're trying 說些什麼東西。妳為什麼不用一些比較常見的字彙來試著表達妳想要 to say. And, I think that the reason why people are so obsessed with this idea of 說的話呢?另外我有想到為什麼大家都會那麼沉迷於 using idioms is because they know that native speakers use idioms and they want 說俚語,因為他們知道母語者都會用這些俚語,他們也想要 to sound like a native speaker. But, I already made a video on how to sound 聽起來像是位母語者。但之前我有錄製一個影片,教你們如何聽起來像是位 like a native speaker. And, that was not one of the tips that I gave. Okay. So, 母語者講話,而學習俚語不是我建議的其中一個技巧。所以 first of all stop focusing so much on idioms because there's about like a 最重要的一件事是:不要那麼執著在學習俚語,因為可能還有 hundred or, you know, maybe two hundred I don't know that are very common. Those 一百個或是大概兩百個比較常見的俚語。這些 are the idioms that you want to know. The rest of the idioms are regional. Okay. 俚語你們會想要知道,其他的俚語就比較地域性的。 Regional idioms that they use in specific places, specific areas, and 地域性的俚語就是會在特地的地方或區域出現, unless you're in those areas, you honestly don't need to use to use those 除非你們在這些地方生活,要不然說真的,你們不需要學會用這些 idioms. There are idioms that they use in Australia and an Ireland 俚語。這些俚語是在澳洲、愛爾蘭、或是英國 in the UK that I don't even know exist. And, I don't care about those idioms. I 才會用到,甚至有些俚語我還沒看過,而且我會忽略這些俚語,我 feel like you know the space and my brain is precious. And, I do not want to 想我不想要浪費我珍貴的腦容量。而且我不想要 occupy unnecessary or space. I do not want to occupy space with unnecessary 這些沒必要的訊息佔據在我的腦中。我真的不想要記住這些 information that really really doesn't matter. So, learn the most common idioms 真的真的不是很重要的訊息。所以學會幾個最常見的俚語, and then stop worrying about it. Okay. And then, if you go travel to a place, pick up 就不要再擔心自己是不是學太少俚語這件事了。另外如果你們要去一個國家旅遊時,可以學會 some idioms while you're there. Sure. Okay. But, be careful when you use idioms. 幾個可到當地使用的俚語。不過你們用俚語的時候,要小心。 Because if you're using an idiom, that's extremely regional and specific to a 因為當你們在用一個俚語的時候,那是一個非常區域性、特定 certain location. You know. The people you're speaking to 的一個地方。你們與他人對話時, might not understand what you're saying. And, the goal of speaking English should 可能對方也不知道你們在講什麼,而且講英文的目的就是應該 be to have clear communication. Okay. So, just a quick example though or another 要有個清楚的交流。來看一個簡單的例子, quick example of why idioms aren't as important as you think they are. Um, one 為什麼俚語不是像你們想得那麼地重要。我有一個 of my good friends. I don't know where she learned her vocabulary because we're 要好的朋友,我不知道她怎麼學英文的,我們 from the same town. But, or the same you know region. But, she uses all kinds of 在同一個鎮長大的,或是同一地區。但她用了很多 idioms that either I have never heard before or I just don't use. And, I 我從來沒聽過或用過的俚語。所以有時候 sometimes when she talks I'm just kind of like I laugh in my head because I'm 她在跟我講話的時候,我會忍不住地在腦海裡偷笑,因為我 like I can't believe she said that. It's not bad. That's just how she talks. That's 很難相信她用的字。這不是件壞事,就只是她講話的方式。那是 natural to her, but I'm not gonna start using all the idioms she uses just 她講話的習慣,不過我不會因此就用她說過 because she uses them. Okay. So, just because you hear a native speaker use a 的全部俚語。所以不要聽到母語者用了某一個俚語後,你們就認為 certain idiom doesn't mean that you have to use that idiom. Okay. You want to make 你們也可以用那個俚語。你們想要確定 sure that people understand you when you speak. So, don't go stringing a whole 他人都能知道你們說的話。所以不要在一個句子中, bunch of idioms together in one sentence. Nobody will understand you. You won't 用一大堆的俚語。沒人會知道你們在說什麼。你們不會 sound like a native speaker. And, you'll just sound ridiculous. Okay. And, let me 因此說話聽起來像是位母語者,你們只會聽起來有點好笑。另外我 think if there's anything else I can tell you guys about idioms. Okay. One last 想想是不是還有關於俚語的事情要跟你們說。最後一件 thing just don't whatever you do just don't waste your time studying these 事情是:就是不要浪費你們的時間來學習這些 things. Okay. There are. There's a lot more important stuff you could be studying. 俚語。還有很多其他重要的事情你們可以學習。 And, I have seen students write long lists of vocabulary, long lists of idioms. 我有看過幾個學生寫下了很多字彙和密密麻麻的俚語。 And, I'm just like who is teaching these antiquated methods of learning, like stop 然後我就在想,誰還在教這些古老的學習方式,不要 stop with the list, stop with all of that. Okay. Pick up things as you go. 再列出長長的清單了。在你們的學習過程中就邊記住。 Pick up words. Pick up phrases. Pick up vocabulary. Pick up idioms as you learn them. 記住幾個單字、片語、和字彙,記住你們學到的俚語。 So, if you see an idiom in a TV show, and you don't know what it means. Go look 所以如果你們在電視節目中看到一個不懂的俚語,就去 it up in the dictionary. If you really like it then incorporate it into your 查字典。如果你們真的喜歡這個俚語,就把它列入你們的字彙中, vocabulary or and practice it. But, what I tend to do when I learn Spanish or when 並且練習用它來造句。但當我在學西班牙語時或是 I learn the new phrase in Spanish is I don't incorporate it right away into my 我學一個新西班牙片語的時候,我不會馬上把它列入 vocabulary. I wait till I've heard something about 20 times in context. 在我的字彙中,我會等到我已經在文本中看到它 20 次,或是 Sometimes I wait till I've heard something a hundred times in context 有時候甚至我會看到它在文本中幾百次後, before I actually start using it. Because then you learn how to use it as native 才會實際地開始用它,因為你們之後會知道如何像是母語者一樣 speakers use it. Okay. Because if not you just might throw in idioms where they 運用它。如果不這樣做的話,你們可能會把這些俚語用在 don't belong and that it's not gonna make you sound more like a native 不適當的地方,並且不會讓你們聽起來像是位 speaker. It's actually gonna make you sound like you don't know what you're 母語者,而且實際上也會讓別人覺得你們也不知道自己 talking about. Okay. So, I hope you guys find this video 在講些什麼。我希望你們大家都會覺得這個影片是 helpful.
