I'm Adam. 你好,歡迎來到 www.engvid.com,我是亞當 In today's video I want to talk to you about some business English, but more specifically, 在今天的影片中,我想教你一些商用英語。更具體地說 we're going to talk about meetings, business meetings and what goes on there, and some 我們將談到有關會議,商務會議以及會議中會發生的事情 of the vocabulary you will need to know if you have to go to some of these meetings. 以及如果你要參加其中的一些會議,你需要知道的字彙 Okay, we have a bunch of words here. 這裡有一堆單字供你學習 I'm going to go through each one, make sure you understand what it is. 我會逐一解釋,確保你明白它的意思 So, every meeting has to have an "agenda". 每個會議都必須有一個「議程」 Actually I'll stand on this side a little bit. 讓我站過來一點 Every meeting has to have an agenda. 每個會議都必須有一個議程 What is an "agenda"? 什麼是「議程」? An agenda is basically the plan or the list of topics that need to be covered in this meeting. 基本上議程是指本次會議的規劃或需要討論的議題清單 Right? 懂嗎? So by the end of the meeting you have to cover these points, and then the meeting can break 所以在會議最終,這些議題都必須討論到,然後會議才可以結束 up or whatever. 或是再進行其他事項 Okay? 了解嗎? So that's the plan. 這就是所謂的規劃 We also use this for other situations, like somebody has an agenda, means somebody has 這個單字我們也可以應用在其他方面,像是某人有一個 agenda a goal they're after. 是指他所要追求的目標 In a business meeting, the plan. 在商業會議中,會議的規劃 The goal is to finish these lists... 目的就是要完成清單上的議題討論 The list of priorities. 一個議題優先順序的清單 At a meeting someone will be "designated" to take notes. 在一個會議中,有人會被「指定」做會議紀錄 Okay? 懂嗎? So, "you designate" means you choose someone or you assign someone a specific task. 所以,「你指定」意思是你挑選某人或你指派某人去執行一項特定的工作 Okay? 懂嗎? So, every... 所以,每個 Every meeting somebody else takes a turn or sometimes some big companies have one person 每個會議都由大家輪流擔任紀錄,或是一些大公司會有專責的人 whose job is to take those notes. 負責記錄 Now, those notes are called "minutes", like the same minute... 會議記錄就叫做「minutes」,這個字 Like, you think about it in terms of time. 和時間單位的分 (鐘) 是同一個字 "Minutes" are the notes or the summary of a meeting. 「會議記錄」是指會議內容的記載或是摘要彙整 Okay? 懂嗎? At the end of the meeting the person who was designated to take the notes will go back 會議最後負責記錄的人要回到自己的辦公桌 to his or her desk, and type up a list of the main highlights of the meeting, and whatever 繕製一份清單,內容包括會議討論的重點,以及達成了那些目標 goals were achieved, whatever items need to be discussed next meeting, etc. 那些事項要在下次會議中討論‧‧‧等 So, notes. 這就是紀錄 Now, somebody might put forward a "motion". 有人可能會提出「動議」 Okay? 懂嗎? "Put forward a motion". 「提出一個動議」 A motion is basically the same idea as a proposal. 動議基本上和提案是相同意思 Somebody says: "Okay, I think we need to do this. 有人說:「我認為我們應該做這件事 Let's vote on it." 讓我們來表決。」 So anything that needs to be voted on is called a motion. 任何需要被表決的事項就是一個動議 Okay? 懂嗎? Their idea, their plan, their suggestion, etc. 也就是提案人的主張、計畫、建議‧‧‧等 After somebody puts forward the motion, everybody else in the meeting room will have "deliberations". 在某人提出動議後,參加會議的其他人就要「審議」 Okay? 懂嗎? They will deliberate on this motion. 它們要對該動議進行審議 Basically they will discuss it. 基本上就是大家一起討論 Everybody will say what they think, what they like, what they don't like. 每個人各抒己見,為何贊同或反對 There'll be a general discussion about the motion, and that's called deliberations. 關於這個動議將會有一個總體的討論,這就是所謂的審議 Sometimes these deliberations involve a "conference call". 有時這些審議涉及「電話會議」 A conference call is basically a call with people outside the meeting room, it could 電話會議是指和在議場外的人通話,可能是透過 Skype be on Skype, some sort of video program, it could be just a telephone call, but it's a 一種視頻軟體,可能只是打電話 speaker and everybody in the room can hear and be heard, and the person on the other 但它是一個揚聲器,房間裡的每個人都可以聽到和被聽到,另一端的人 end can be... 也同樣可以 Can hear and be heard as well. 聽到和被聽到 So it's a conference call. 這就是電話會議 Then everybody will "brainstorm" to come up with new ideas. 接下來大家要進行「腦力激盪」提出新點子 So, "brainstorming" is basically thinking, but thinking hard about a specific topic, 「腦力激盪」就是集思廣益,對一個特定的主題用力思考 and trying to come up with different ideas for that topic, how to do something, etc. 試著就這個主題提出不同的想法,如何做某事‧‧‧等等 Hopefully everybody in the room will "collaborate", people from different departments might come 希望房間裡的每個人都能「合作」,來自不同部門的人可能會參加一個會議 into a meeting to talk about a project or a product, or whatever, or a campaign. 討論一項企畫案或產品,或任何事,或者一個活動 Everybody has to collaborate, everybody has to work together, that's what "collaborate" 每個人都必須合作,每個人都必須相互配合一起工作,這就是「合作」 means. 的含義 A good company will have people who like to collaborate, they'll like to work as a team; 一家好公司會有樂於互助合作的員工,他們喜歡像個團隊般一起工作 some companies it's a bit more difficult. 有些公司則不容易達到這種境界 Then after the deliberations, after the brainstorming, after all their talk, it's time to vote. 經過審議,經過腦力激盪,大家都討論完畢後,接下來就要開始表決了 Okay? 了解嗎? So everybody will "cast a ballot". 每個人都要「投票」 We also talk about this when we talk about politics. 當我們討論到政治的時候就會談到投票 After the campaign for a political position, the public goes to cast a ballot. 緊接著政治職位的競選活動後,民眾就要投票 They go to the ballot box to vote. 他們去投票箱投票 So, "cast a ballot", vote. 所以 「投票」,表決 Now, there are different ways to do it. 有幾種不同的表決方式 There's a secret ballot. 一種是秘密投票 Okay? 知道嗎? If you have a secret ballot, then everybody writes their answer, their choice on a piece 如果你採用秘密投票,就是每個人寫下自己的決定,寫在一張紙上 of paper, puts it into a box, and then somebody collects them: "Yes", "No", whatever. 放進投票箱裡,然後有人會統計「贊成」、「反對」的票數,諸如此類 There's an open ballot that everybody knows what everybody else is voting. 有一種是公開投票,大家都可以看到彼此投給誰 This is called "a show of hands". 這就叫「舉手表決」 "Show of hands, who's for the project? 「舉手表決,哪些人贊成這項計畫? Who's against?" 哪些人反對?」 Okay, and then more hands this side, this side wins; more hands this side, this side wins. 這一邊舉手的人比較多,這一邊就贏了;另一邊舉手的人比較多,另一邊就贏了 "Show of hands". 「舉手表決」 In a classroom a teacher might use this: "Okay, does everybody understand? 在課堂上,教師可能這麼說:「好的,每個人都懂了嗎? A show of hands. 舉一下手 If you understand, put up your hand." 如果你懂了,就把手舉起來。」 Good. 很好 Sometimes you'll hear: "The ayes have it". 有時候你會聽到:「贊成的贏了」 Another way to vote is: -"All in favour say, 'Aye'." 另一種表決方式為:-「所有贊成的請說,'Aye'」 -"Aye." -"Aye." -"All in... -「所有‧‧‧ All against, say: 'Nay'." 所有反對的,請說:'Nay'」 -"Nay." -"Nay." More people have... 比較多的人‧‧‧ Say: "Yes", the "Ayes", not these eyes, the ayes, this means yes. 說:「贊成」,就用 "Ayes",不要和 "eyes" 搞混喔,這裡說的 "ayes",表示贊成的意思 "The ayes have it" means the yes side wins. "The ayes have it" 意思是贊成的 (佔多數) 贏了 Okay? 懂嗎? Now, hopefully you will reach a "consensus" or you will reach a "unanimous"--excuse me--decision. 希望你們最有可以達成「共識」或達成「一致」的決議 "Consensus" and "unanimous" are very similar words. 「共識」和「一致」意思非常接近 "Consensus" means all or at least almost all. 「共識」意味著全部,或至少是幾乎全部 So if most of the people choose one side, then you have a consensus, then that's a good 所以,如果大多數人選擇了一方,那麼你們就有了共識,這是一個很好的決定 decision, everybody's on board. 因為大家都贊成了 If it's unanimous, means everybody agrees or everybody disagrees. 如果達成一致的結論,意味著每個人都同意,或每個人都不同意 So, "unanimous" means everybody, all the people who are voting made the same choice. 因此,「一致」意味著每ㄧ個人,所有投票的人都做出了同樣的選擇 Okay? 了解嗎? Now, sometimes if you can't make a meeting... 那麼,有時如果你無法參加會議... Okay? 了解嗎? You're out of town on business or you're sick that day, but you want somebody to cast your 你出差在外或者那天你生病了,但你想要有人能幫你把票投下去 ballot, vote for you, you can send a "proxy". 替你投票,你可以派一個「代理人」 A "proxy" basically means a substitute, somebody who will go in your place to vote in your 「代理人」基本上表示替代者,有人會去議場以你的立場及名義 name. 來投票 Okay? 了解嗎? We also think... 我們也知道‧‧‧ If you read the news you sometimes see, like: "proxy war". 如果你看新聞,有時候會看到像是:「代理人戰爭」 A "proxy war", when you have two very big countries, if for example, Russia and the 「代理人戰爭」,意思是當兩個大國,例如,俄國和美國 United States decided to have a war, that would be a lot of destruction because they're 決定進行一場戰爭,那將造成很大的破壞,因為它們都是 both very big countries with very big militaries. 非常大的國家,軍事力量非常強大 So if they want to fight but they don't want to fight directly, they will fight through 所以,如果他們想打,但是又不想直接對幹,他們就會透過一些小國 smaller countries. 由這些小國來替他們打 They will find a small country and a small country, and they will send these two countries 他們會各自找一個小國,由這兩個小國 to war as a proxy for themselves. 代替他們打仗 Right? 了解嗎? In the business meeting it's not so bad, but it's still the same idea, it's a substitute. 雖然商業會議不是打仗,但意思是一樣的,就是指一個替代者 Okay, so then the meeting is all good, you have your ballot, you have your choice, everybody's 好,那麼這次會議進行的很順利,你票也投了,你也做了選擇, in agreement, it's a consensus, etc., it's time to "wrap up". 大家都同意,達了成共識等等‧‧‧,是時候該做一個「總結」了 When you're wrapping up, basically you're bringing the meeting to a close. 當你進行總結的時候,基本上你就是準備結束會議 You finish all the last details. 你完成了會議所有該做的 "Any questions? 「還有意見嗎? Any questions? 還有意見嗎? No? 沒有? Everybody's good? 大家都沒問題吧? Okay, let's wrap it up. 好,那我們就做個總結 Everybody sign where they need to sign. 每個人在該簽名的地方簽名 See ya next week, next meeting." 下週見,下次會議見。」 And then you "adjourn". 接下來你宣布「散會」 "Adjourn" means you basically end the meeting, or sometimes you suspend the meeting. 「散會」意思是結束這次會議,或有時候是休會 "Okay, this meeting is adjourned" means it's finished. 「好了,散會」意思是會議結束了 "We're going to adjourn this meeting until next week", so it means we're going to take 「這個會議休會到下週再開」,意思是我們要休息一下 a break, we're going to come back and finish next time. 下週再回來繼續開 Okay? 了解嗎? "A-journ", the "d" is silent, you don't actually pronounce it. "A-journ", 其中的「d」是無聲的,d不發音 So, there you go. 就這樣了 You're ready to go to a business meeting in English and be able to handle all these different 你已經夠格參加英文的商務會議,並能夠運用這些不同的 words. 字彙 If you have any questions about them, please go to www.engvid.com, you can ask me in the 如果你對於今天所講的有任何問題,請到 www.engvid.com,你可以在那裡的論壇中 forum. 問我 You can take the quiz, make sure you understand all of these words. 你可以做一下測驗,確保你能理解所有這些字彙 Of course, subscribe to my channel if you like this 當然,如果你喜歡今天的課程就請你訂閱我的視頻 lesson, and I'll see you again very soon.
