where... my almost my entire family was murdered

along with about 350.000 other Polish Jews.

And people sometimes will ask me

常常有人問我

whether that experience had anything to do with my work for animals,

it didn't have a little to do with my work for animals,

我的遭遇，跟我倡導動物權並非只有一丁點關連

it had everything to do with my work for animals.

我的遭遇，是我倡導動物權最大的理由

Throughout that ordeal, before we find ourselves

飽受了納粹大屠殺無情的折磨

by the slogan, "Never again"

我們立下口號「絕不讓悲劇重演」

it was an article of faith that our sacrifice would not be in vain.

這一句誓言讓我們的犧牲不至白費

That the world would be so shocked by what was done to us.

我們遭逢的不幸震驚了整個世界

That they would never allow atrocities like these to be perpetrated again.

警告人們絕不容許再犯相同的暴行

In 1975, after I emigrated to the United states,

1975 年，我移民到了美國

I happened to visit a slaughterhouse,

因緣際會走訪了一趟屠宰場

where I saw very frightened animals

在那裡我看到又驚又怕的動物

subjected to horrendous crowding conditions,

囚禁在擁擠又惡劣的環境裡

while awaiting their deaths.

等待著牠們的死期到來

Just as my family members were in the notorious Treblinka death camp.

就像我的家人，在惡名昭彰的特雷布林卡滅絕營裡的遭遇

I saw the same efficient and emotionless killing routine as in Treblinka.

我看到高效率又無情的宰殺流程，就如同特雷布林卡滅絕營裡的情況

I saw the neat piles of hearts, hooves and other body parts

我看到井然有序堆疊的心臟、蹄子和屍塊

just so reminiscent of the piles of Jewish hair, glasses, and shoes in Treblinka.

讓我聯想到特雷布林卡滅絕營裡猶太人成堆的頭髮、眼鏡和鞋子

And I recall the allusion by famed Yiddish writer, Isaac Bashevis Singer that,

我進而回想起有名的猶太人作家 Isaac Bashevis Singer 曾隱喻

"For the animals, all men are Nazis and life is an eternal Treblinka"

「對動物而言，人類就是納粹，而命運，是永恆的特雷布林卡。」

and then it finally dawned on me,

我終於領悟

"Never again"

「絕不讓悲劇重演」

is not about what others should not do to us

不是指絕不讓悲劇重演在我們身上

"Never again" means that

「絕不讓悲劇重演」是指

we must never again perpetrate mass atrocities against other living beings.

我們絕不再對其他生靈犯下相同龐大的暴行

That we must never again raise animals for food or for any other form of exploitation

我們不得再飼養動物作為食物，或以各種不同的形式剝削牠們

and that's when I became an activist for animal rights.

就是在那時，我成了動物權的鬥士
