So, I've got ten of the most popular names in the UK that are commonly mispronounced.

So, if you have any of these names yourself,

you're going to have to say it a million times on the phone,

The first one is this one.

So, the official pronunciation of this name is Siobhan,

正式唸法是 /ʃɪˈvɔːn/ Shi-vawn，

but obviously, you can name your baby whatever you want to name it.

當然，你想怎麼叫你的小孩都可以。

So, if you want to call it Siobhan, that is absolutely fine.

如果你想叫他 Siobhan，也完全沒問題。

It's a lovely name as well.

這也是個很美的名字。

I think I actually had more Siobhans in my year at school than I did Siobhans.

其實我上學時，同學名字唸 Siobhan 的比正式發音多。

Yeah, you can call it what you want,

but commonly mispronounced, so be careful.

The next one is a gorgeous name.

I absolutely love this name.

It is this one.

And the 'S' is silent.

Isla 的 s 是不發音。

And this causes some confusion.

這可能會造成混淆。

It should be Isla.

應該唸 /ˈaɪlə/ EYE-lə。

Isla.

EYE-lə。

I think I just love any name with like the /ai/ sound in it.

任何有 /ai/ 音的名字我都喜歡。

I think it's so beautiful.

Isla.

EYE-lə。

Now, the next one is actually a combination of two names.

接下來這個名字其實是把兩個名字擺在一起，當成一組。

And this is mispronounced purely because people misread it.

它們會被唸錯的原因純粹是大家看錯了。

So, we've got Kristin and Kirstin.

分別是 Kristin 和 Kirstin。

Kristin, Kirstin.

Kristin 和 Kirstin。

But yes, a number of times I've emailed someone called Kristin,

有幾次我發電郵給名叫 Kristin 的人，

and I've greeted them as Kirstin.

但我卻稱呼她 Kirstin。

And it gets a bit embarrassing.

So yeah, be extra, extra careful over Kristin and Kirstin.

Number four, there is no right or wrong with this one.

You can say Eva, or you can say Eva.

The best thing to do is just ask.

Number five, much like Eva or Eva,

is Kyra or Kyra.

With this particular spelling, it could be either or.

It could be either Kyra or Kyra.

Kye-ruh 或 Kir-uh。

But with other spellings, it could be a little bit more clear.

但用其他拼寫，可能會更清楚一點。

The next one, another one where you really should just ask.

下一個，也是個最好先問清楚再唸的名字。

Is it Mia or is it Mia?

該唸 Mee-ah 還是 My-ah？

Who knows.

誰知道呢。

Ask the poor person.

只有問問可憐的當事人了。

The next one is confusing purely because it has three vowels in a row.

下個名字會讓人困惑純粹是因為它有三個母音連在一起。

Oh my God.

It should be pronounced Gaia, Gaia.

應該唸 Guy-ah， Guy-ah。

But I'm pretty sure there will be someone in the world that calls it Gaia.

但肯定有人會唸 Gay-ah。

Actually, on that line of thought, one of my school teachers was actually called Gay,

事實上，我真的有個老師叫 Gay，

which comes from the meaning happy.

這個名字本來是快樂的意思。

But yeah, bit of a shame, actually.

It's not a name that I hear so frequently nowadays.

Anything containing "Leigh" spelled like this.

任何包含 Leigh 的名字。

So it could Leigh on its own or It could be Ashleigh.

可能只是單獨的 Leigh，也可能是 Ashleigh。

People who have this in their name frequently complain of being called "lay" or Ash "lay", etc.

名字裡有這個拼寫的人，經常會抱怨自己名字被唸成 lay 或 Ashlay 之類的。

Next, we have this one.

接下來是這個。

Now, obviously it depends on the parent.

顯而易見，發音還是依父母決定。

This one should actually be Kaia, like in Maia.

這個名字發音是 Kaia，類似 Mia 的唸法，

But some people might pronounce it by saying Kaia.

但有些人可能會唸成 Kei-ya。

And the last one is this one.

最後是這個。

Again, it depends on the parent.

唸法也是依照爸媽決定。

It could be Layla, or it could be Layla.

可以唸 Lei-la 或 Lai-la。

I personally prefer Layla because it's got that /ai/ sound in it,

which I think is so beautiful.
