I thought: 因為牽涉到自己 “What? This could be bad for me? Yeah, I know it's bad for animals, 我想「真的嗎?我會不幸嗎?我知道對動物來說是不幸, but this could be bad for me? Ah, OK, I'm gonna start thinking about this". 但對我會嗎?好吧,我會開始思考這件事。」 I always believed there was no such thing as a healthy vegetarian. 我那時還不相信有所謂的健康素食者 One of my personal training mentors told me that, he says: 我的健身教練曾跟我說 "No such thing as a healthy vegetarian", I said: 「吃素不健康。」我還回他 “Good, I don't want to be one, I don't want to have to look into it, fantastic”. 「太好了,反正我也不想吃素,正好不用費心去研究,太棒了!」 When this man told me that eating animals is bad karma, I said: 所以當這位老先生說吃肉會帶來業障時 “Yeah, there's no such thing as a healthy vegetarian, though” 我說「但吃素又不健康。」 and he said: “Well, I've been vegetarian for twenty years” 他回答「是嗎?我已經吃素20年了。」 and I said: “Shit. Alright, well in that case, um, maybe it is possible, 我說「不會吧!好啦,總是會有例外, maybe you're a freak, but I'll look into it, I'll look into, I'll see what it's about”. 可能你是怪胎,但我會研究看看是怎麼一回事。」 I looked into it and I started learning, 研究後我才知道 how much healthier it is to cut animal products from your diet, reducing the chances of heart disease, 從飲食中拿掉動物食品是多麼健康,能降低罹患許多疾病的機率 cancers, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes... so many diseases. 心臟病、癌症、肥胖、骨質疏鬆症、糖尿病……等等 We have right now an epidemic of illness and disease. 我們處於文明病的時代 We could have an epidemic of wellness and health. So much potential here. 但我們極有潛力讓大家都能健康幸福 And I decided: “OK, I'm gonna try this for a week, 於是我決定「好吧,我決定吃素一週。」 I'll go vegetarian for one week, purely a selfish experiment to see how I feel, 單純出於私心想測試我的感受 to see how much better I'm gonna feel". 測試能否改善健康 Three days in, 三天後 instead of feeling like I couldn't get out of bed in the morning, because I hadn't had any protein, 我不但沒有因為缺乏蛋白質而臥病在床 I felt the opposite. 恰恰相反 I felt so much energy, I felt so strong, I felt like I needed to sleep less, 我精力充沛,充滿力氣,不再須要睡那麼久 I felt happier, I felt good! Three days in. 心情更好,感覺棒透了!才三天而已 Before that, I was one of the biggest meat-eaters you know. 我過去是無肉不歡的肉食者 I even ate steak for breakfast. 連早餐都吃牛排 I was working on a cruise ship, it's buffets. 因為我工作的遊輪都提供自助餐 I was taking advantage of that, I was piling my plate up with flesh of dead animals. 我想多撈點好處,自然都把我的餐盤裝滿動物的肉 And no wonder I felt better after three days! 難怪才三天就改善了 But it was a shock at the time, because I never believed you could be healthy. 但那時我很訝異,因為之前我不相信吃素會健康 So feeling good inspired me to look into it more - 這讓我更仔細去研究素食 what's this, why do I feel so great, there must be something to this. 研究為什麼我感覺這麼棒,一定有什麼原因 I looked into it. I learned the health benefits, 我查了又查,得知素食對健康的益處 but I also see that so many people have another reason for becoming vegetarian. 同時發現很多人是因為 And that reason is: “because I don't want to contribute to harm to animals”. 「不想傷害動物」而不吃肉 Obviously, as we know in the vegan crowd, that that's not quite the answer, 雖然純素者都很清楚,那並不是最好的方法 but a lot of people don't understand that yet. 但他們不瞭解純素主義 They think vegetarian is the good answer here, that's what we do, 自然會認為只要遵循不吃肉的生活模式 that's how we live in alignment and we stop hurting animals. 就不會再傷害到動物、就行了 I've never cared about animals before, I really didn't. 而我從來不關心動物,一點都不關心 I feel bad saying that now, but the reason why, 現在說起來很愧疚 and I realize now, is because I never understood who they were. 但我後來發現是因為我從來不瞭解牠們 I didn't understand that they were capable of caring about their own life. 我不知道牠們也會珍惜自己的生命 I didn't think they could, so I thought: “Why would I care about their life, 所以我認為「如果牠們都不珍惜自己的生命, if they can't even care about their own life". It made no sense. 我又何必去在意呢?這不合理阿。」 I've seen footage of animals being slaughtered 我也看過屠宰動物的影片 and my reaction was: “I'm not going to feel guilty about that, 我的反應是「我不會有罪惡感, that's what we need to do to be healthy”. 因為要吃動物我才能健康。」 Seeing everyone else's reasons for being vegetarian, 但瞭解了其他人吃素的原因後 I thought: "OK, I'm gonna check this out again, what's happening in the slaughterhouse, 我想「好吧!我再研究一次屠宰場的運作, what's happening before these animals become this neatly wrapped 再研究一次動物是如何變成超市中, package on the supermarket shelf, what happens. 包裝精美的產品。」 I see it again for the second time. 於是我研究了第二次 This time I had a new perspective, 這次我帶著不同的觀點 because I knew now that we can live and thrive without consuming animal products. 因為我已經知道,我們不需要動物食品也能生存,還能更健康 So seeing this torture, this mutilation, this murder of these innocent beings, 因此看到我們折磨、殘害、宰殺這些無辜的生靈 it led me to the question... 讓我開始疑惑 If we aren't eating animals for health - we don't need to kill and eat them to survive and be healthy - 如果我們不是為了健康而吃動物,不是為了生存與營養,而把牠們宰來吃 What are we doing this to them for? 我們為什麼要這樣對待牠們? And I assumed there'd be a great answer, 我以為一定有正當的理由 I thought there must be a good answer, because everyone hates animal cruelty, 一定有,因為大家都討厭虐待動物 everyone loves animals, so surely there's a fantastic answer why we do this. 大家都喜歡動物,所以一定有合理的原因 And I looked and I looked and I looked and I learned the best answers we've got, 我查了又查,發現我們的答案 the best justifications we've got, are taste, habit, tradition and convenience. 我們的理由,最多只能說是口腹之慾、習慣及方便性 None of these reasons are good enough justification to cause this unnecessary harm to animals. 這些都不是在非必要情況下傷害動物的正當理由 And I didn't care about animals, but I know injustice when I see it. 我雖然不關心動物,但我知道這是不正義 I know unnecessary violence when I see it. I know oppression when I see it. 我知道這是不必要的暴力和壓迫 And they are not the types of qualities I want to be. 這些不公不義不是我追求的 They are not the type of things living in alignment with the kind, peaceful, 我不願意與這樣的理念為伍 respectful person that I strive to be and I always have. 我一直致力成為一個善良的人,愛好和平、尊重他人 And I learned that. 於是從此之後 And I became a vegetarian for a whole new reason, 我開始不吃肉,為了一個全新的理由 it was for animals. 為了動物 Soon later, I learned it's not just about flesh, 不久後,我又瞭解到問題不只是肉 it's about all the ways animals are being used in our society. 而是我們的社會,在各方面對動物的利用 All use is exploitation, all exploitation is a form of abuse 所有的利用都是剝削,所有剝削都是一種凌虐 and all abuse is immoral. 所有凌虐都不道德 I learned it's about dairy, 我得知這存在於乳品、雞蛋、毛料、絲綢、皮革 products containing animal products, products that have been tested on animals, 存在於有動物成分、有動物實驗的商品, places that exploit animals for entertainment and for testing. 存在於把動物作為娛樂及實驗用途的場所 It's about all the ways we use animals. 存在於各種用途 This is when I learned about veganism. I heard a little bit about it before, my friend had gone vegan, 就是在那時我瞭解了純素主義,我以前只有聽過 who I didn't know very well, and someone came up to me one day and said: 當時我有一個不熟的朋友轉純素,有人跟我說 “Grant has gone vegan” and I was like: “what the hell is that?” 「Grant現在吃純素了。」我的反應是「那是什麼鬼?」 and he said: “I don't really know, but he doesn't sit on leather couches”. 他說「我也不知道,但他不坐皮革沙發了。」 I was like: “What? That is weird man, he used to be normal in high school”. 我說「不會吧?太奇怪了,他高中時不是很正常嗎?」 Vegan - always thought it was this extreme thing, unnecessary, 純素者總是被認為太偏激、沒必要 why do we have to be vegan, why? 為什麼要吃純素?為什麼? Because all the ways we use animals causes them harm. 因為只要利用到動物,就會傷害到牠們 Because no living being deserves to be the slave or the property of someone else. 因為任何有情眾生都不該被奴役、被視為財產 I got to a point where that was the only thing that made sense. 這時我才明白,純素主義才是正確的觀念 Since when was it extreme to not want to harm animals, when did that become extreme? 是從什麼時候開始,不想傷害動物變成了偏激? What's extreme is saying we love animals and we're against animal cruelty, 偏激的是口口聲聲說愛護動物、反對虐待動物 while we pay people to mutilate and torture and slaughter animals 卻付錢請人支解、虐待、宰殺牠們 for foods and products we don't need, that's extreme. 把牠們做成不必要的食物和用品,這才叫偏激 I decided to take a 365 day vow of silence for animals. 於是我立下誓約,為動物緘默365天 I thought it'd be a great way to raise awareness for them, 我想這個好辦法能使人意識到動物權議題 because you don't need to care about animals to 因為即使你不關心動物 be intrigued by some crazy Aussie guy not talking for an entire year and traveling around the country. 一個澳洲老兄在國內旅遊一年,都不開口說話,一定能吸引你的目光 I thought that will be intriguing to a wide range of people, 我想這能吸引到很多族群 this could be a good campaign to raise awareness for them. 這個很棒的活動能使人開始關注動物 I had the idea after hours and hours of meditation and that was kind of the problem, 這是我靜坐許多小時後所冒出的點子 because after that many hours of meditation, all ideas seem awesome. 也可能是因為消耗太多時間,所以不管最後想出什麼,好像都很棒 I'm like: “vow of silence for a year, that's a good one!”. 我當時想「宣誓緘默一年,感覺不賴。」 I would never have thought of doing that and following through with it unless I came from that place. 之前從沒想過我會有這個計畫,還能堅持到底 So that was my goal, that's what I did last year, 於是我設定了目標,在去年達成了 I travelled around the country to raise awareness for animals and promote peace over violence. 我在國內四處旅遊,提倡動物權,提倡以和平取代暴力 To promote the abolition of animal exploitation. Because nothing less, I believe, 提倡廢除動物剝削,因為我相信 is good enough, we need to abolish this, this needs to end for them, completely. 我們必須徹底廢除對動物的壓榨 I don't want to talk too much about that journey today, because probably half 今天我不想談論太多我的旅程 the people here have already heard me talk about it and this is a vegan crowd. 大概有一半的人都聽過了,因為這裡的聽眾大都是純素者 I'm assuming most people here are vegan. If not - cool! 我猜大部分是,不是也很好 But you probably are. 但我想大部分是 So what I want to talk to you about today is how do we help animals. 所以今天我想談「如何幫助動物」 Now first and foremost, for anyone here who isn't vegan, 首先,如果這裡有人不是純素者 and I know there are some people here who aren't vegan, because I spoke to you today - 我知道有些人不是,因為我剛有跟大家聊過 everyone else just leave the room, all the vegans get out, I'm focusing. 現在純素者都先出去,我要好好教育這些肉食者 For those people who aren't vegan, 還沒轉純素的人 the first thing I just want to talk about, is to single you all out. 我第一件想告訴你們的是,你們被我盯上了,不是啦 No, just to tell you why veganism is important. 是要告訴你為什麼純素主義很重要 Veganism is important because of our core values, 因為這是我們的核心價值 because of them also, but let's just talk about us for a second. 當然對動物也很重要,但暫且先從我們談起 We have core values already of veganism before we were vegan. 在我們轉純素前,這個核心價值早已深植在我們心中 Almost everyone here was not born vegan, 在座幾乎每個人都不是天生吃純素 almost everyone here believed at one point that veganism was extreme 都曾認為那太偏激 and that they would never become a vegan. 自己不可能轉純素 Veganism is what is already in our heart. 但我們內心卻支持著純素主義 If you agree that causing unnecessary harm to animals is wrong, then by that belief, 如果你認同不該對動物造成不必要的傷害 by your own belief, you are obligated to become vegan. 基於你的理念,你就有責任成為純素者 Because anything less than being vegan 因為做不到這點 is going in conflict with your core values of nonviolence to animals. 就牴觸了你反對虐待動物的核心價值 Anything less. 只要做不到這點就抵觸了 Veganism is the first thing we should do to help animals. 純素主義是幫助動物的第一步 But it's not necessarily helping animals. 但未必真的有幫助 Veganism stops hurting animals, it stops our contribution, 純素主義只是停止對動物造成更多傷害 we become vegan and we stop paying people to mutilate and kill animals for us. 轉純素只是不再付錢請人為我們肢解動物、宰殺動物 Obviously that's so important, that is step one, 毫無疑問,第一步確實很重要 that is perhaps the most important step, perhaps equally important as step two. 可以說是最重要的步驟,跟第二步一樣重要 Step one, if you care about animals, you stop hurting them. 第一步,如果你關心動物,就不要傷害牠們 You don't buy free-range, you don't go vegetarian, 不買放養雞蛋,不吃奶蛋 you don't buy humanely slaughtered animals. 不支持人道屠宰 Step one, if you don't want to hurt animals, is become vegan. 第一步,如果你不想傷害動物,就要轉純素 I'm not expecting you to do it overnight, you might - and a lot of people do - 我不要求你們立刻改變,你可能跟很多人一樣 you might feel like you can't, 覺得自己辦不到 I understand where you're coming from there, but that is your goal 我能理解,但那是你的最終目標 and don't stop anywhere on that path of you getting there until you're there. 直到達成以前,都不要半途而廢 It's incredibly easy, it's incredibly healthy. We are all, most people here are vegan, 真的超簡單,超健康,這裡的人幾乎都吃純素 we're just normal people, we're not highly intellectual, necessarily, when... 我們跟普通人沒兩樣,智商也沒比較高 - who, someone laughing? “I am highly intellectual, thank you very much”. 誰?哪個人在笑?他說「我智商比較高,謝謝。」 We are not necessarily particular religion, 我們沒有特定的宗教信仰 we are not necessarily tofu lovers, although I do love tofu now, before I hated it, 我們未必都喜歡吃豆腐,我以前的確不喜歡,但現在很愛 but it's actually quite good if you haven't tried it. 超好吃,你們一定要試試看 We are not necessarily caring about our health or the environment, 我們不見得在意健康、在意環保 we don't even necessarily have to love animals - 我們甚至並非都喜歡動物 I didn't. 我以前就不喜歡 All you have to agree with is that it is wrong to cause unnecessary harm to animals. 但你只要認同一件事——對動物造成不必要的傷害是不對的 And if you agree with that, you believe in veganism. 一旦認同這個概念,你就認同了純素主義 That's it. 這樣就夠了 That's step one my friends, become vegan. 這是第一步,各位,轉純素 Step 2: Because it does not end there, 第二步,因為事情還沒結束 it's not just about “ Cool I'm vegan now, let's go have some launch, 並不只是「酷斃惹,我轉純素了, there's this new vegan place opened up”. 去吃午餐吧,有一家新開的純素餐廳。」 I mean yeah, that's great, support the vegan businesses and everything, 那的確很棒,支持純素的相關企業 but there's more to this. 但還有更要緊的事 We need to become active, we need to take action 我們要更積極,要採取行動 and we need to help these animals in need, because what is happening to them... 幫助那些還在受苦的動物,因為牠們正經歷…… I want to remind you what is happening to them. 我要提醒你牠們正經歷的遭遇 They're getting their beaks cut off, 牠們的喙被切除 so they don't peck each other to death in their confined crowded prisons. 才不會在擁擠的牢籠中因互啄而死 They're having their tails cut off, so other animals don't eat them of them. 牠們的尾巴被割下,才不會遭同類咬噬 They're having their teeth clipped, so that they out of stress don't eat into each other. 牠們的牙齒被剪掉,才不會因為壓力過大而互相啃食 They're being castrated when they're just babies with no anesthesia. 牠們從小就在沒有麻醉的情況下被閹割 Baby male chicks are being sent into a blender, blending them up alive. 小公雞則被送至攪碎機內活活攪死 Baby boys in the dairy industry are being sent to the slaughterhouse to have their throats slit, 乳品業的小公牛被送去屠宰場,喉嚨被劃開 because they do not produce milk. Their moms are hooked up to painful milking machines 因為牠們無法產奶,牠們的媽媽則被套上折騰人的擠乳機 and forcibly impregnated and their babies are taken from them. 被迫懷孕後,生下的寶寶被帶走 And all of these animals end up at the same slaughterhouse. 而所有這些動物最後都要去屠宰場 Humanely slaughtered, 人道屠宰 which as we know, means nothing for animals. Humane means to show compassion, 我們都知道這對動物來說毫無意義,人道的定義是展現慈悲心 there is never a compassionate way to exploit someone, 但任何形式的剝削都不叫慈悲 there is never a compassionate way to kill someone who wants to live. 對不想死的動物而言,任何形式的宰殺都不叫慈悲 There is no humane slaughter. 人道屠宰並不存在 What is happening to animals right now is worse than your worst nightmare. 動物正面臨的遭遇,比你最恐怖的惡夢還可怕 What's happening to animals right now, you would not wish on your worst enemy. 你甚至不希望那發生在你的死對頭身上 The worst offenders on this planet, pedophiles, sex offenders, murderers, 世界上最惡名昭彰的罪犯、戀童癖、強姦犯或殺人犯 do not get treated anywhere near as badly as the way we treat 所受到的懲罰,與動物所承受的痛苦是無法比擬的 the most innocent and vulnerable beings on this planet. 而動物卻是世上最無辜、最溫和的生靈 And the worst part is that this is so prevalent in our society, 最令人絕望的是,這樣的殘酷在社會中是如此普遍 almost everyone is involved in this, 幾乎每個人都參與其中 knowingly or unknowingly, understanding what they're contributing to or not. 無論這些人是否知情、是否清楚自己是共犯 This is 1.5 trillion innocent beings that this is happening to every single year 每一年,有1.5兆無辜的生靈受苦 and that's a conservative estimate. That's 1.5 trillion lives who feel pain 這還是保守估計,這1.5兆隻動物人類一樣有痛覺 and suffer just like us, who deserve respect just like us. 跟人類一樣應該得到尊重 We need to put ourselves in the animals' position. 我們要將心比心為動物設想 One of the best quotes I've ever heard that has fueled my activism, is: 我最喜歡,也最讓我充滿鬥志的名言是 “Speak up for animals the way you would want to be spoken for, 「想像身陷於動物處境的是自己, if it was you in their situation”. 為牠們發聲,好比為自己發聲。」 Think about that, think about what's happening to them, speak up, 想想這點、想想動物正在經歷的折磨,勇敢發聲 be proud as a vegan, you should be proud, you are on the side of justice for animals, 當個有自信的純素者,你應該要抬頭挺胸,因為你站在動物權的一方 you are on the side of justice, of a new revolution, 正義的一方、革命的一方、社會運動的一方 the fastest growing social justice movement of our time. 這是目前成長最快速的社會運動 If you're not vegan, if you're fighting against vegan, 如果你不是純素者,如果你反對純素主義 you are on the side of the oppressors, you are on the side of violence, 你便是站在欺壓的一方、暴力的一方、 you are on the side of injustice to those innocent and vulnerable beings. 不公義的一方,欺壓無辜脆弱的動物 Animals cannot do this without us, 我們是動物唯一的發言人 we need to do more than become vegan, we need to spread the vegan message, 所以不光只是轉純素,我們還要做更多,我們要散播這個訊息 we need to inspire other people to become vegan. That is step two. 要激勵他人轉純素,這是第二步 Help others do what you've done. Don't be afraid to do it. This is a gift, 用你的自身經驗幫助別人,不要害怕,這是你能送給動物的禮物 not only for the animals, this is the least they deserve, veganism is the least they deserve. 讓牠們享有基本的權益、最低限度的保障 But this is a gift to people you are giving, 這也是你能送人的禮物 how good do you feel now that you are vegan, 這種生活讓你多快樂 how much better do you feel that you're living in alignment with your core values 把正義、和平、尊重動物的信念 of peace and justice and respect to others, 實踐在生活中是多如釋重負 how good does it feel to know that you can eat such amazing food and no one had to die. 發現那麼多美食不需要動物的犧牲,是多幸福 How good does it feel. 這些體驗是多美妙、 It is good, it is something to share, 多美好、多值得分享 not just for the animals, but for our friends, for our families. 不只送給動物,也送給我們的家人朋友 And no one else will do it. 推廣純素主義的工作,捨我們其誰 Vegetarians will not promote veganism. People who buy free range will not promote veganism. 吃奶蛋素的人不會推廣,會買放養雞蛋的人也不會 We need veganism promoted, because that is the only thing 但我們必須推廣純素生活,因為這是唯一 that will bring an end to animal exploitation. 能終結剝削動物的機會 Because I'm sure I speak for most people here, 我相信我的話能代表這裡的聽眾 I don't want regulated animal exploitation, 我們不想「改善」剝削動物的形式 I don't want happy animal exploitation. 不想「仁慈地」剝削動物 I don't want people to feel good about their choices in consuming animals, 不想消費者心安理得地購買 because it says "humane tick" from one of the animal organizations. 有福利認證的人道動物食品 I'm sure most of us here do not want that and neither would the animals. 我保證這裡大部分的聽眾都不想,動物也不想 They don't wanna be exploited at all, just like we wouldn't. 牠們壓根不想被剝削,就像我們一樣 The only people that will promote a vegan message, the abolishing of animal exploitation, are vegans. 以推廣純素主義來廢除剝削動物的唯一人選,就是我們 Each and every one of us. We are the only ones who will do it. 我們每一個人,只有我們會推廣 Be empowered by that, you have a purpose, you can save lives, you have something so important, 以此做為你的助力,你有使命,你能拯救生命,你擁有的是如此珍貴 you've made a connection that almost the rest of the planet has not yet made 你能同理動物的處境,世界上大部分的人都還做不到 and it's so simple, it's shockingly simple, 即使這很容易,非常容易 and yet most people have still not made it. 但仍然很多人做不到 If you don't want to harm animals, 如果你不願意傷害動物 you have to become vegan - that's it. 就要轉純素,如此簡單 That might not seem like a lot to you now that you've made that connection, but it is. 這對你來說也許理所當然,因為你已有了連結 It is a powerful statement when you say "I'm against all animal use", 但每當你說出「我反對一切利用動物的行為。」是很震撼的陳述 it is a powerful statement to say that you don't consume any animal products 或是「我不消費任何動物產品, and you're a healthy normal person. 但我是個健康的正常人。」 This is what we need to do, this is how we help animals. 這是我們的責任,也是真正幫助動物的方法 I know a lot of people are afraid to talk about veganism, 我知道很多純素者不敢提這個話題 or they're afraid to do something for the vegan movement, 或不敢採取任何行動 they don't want to ostracize themselves from their friends, from their family, 他們不想被家人朋友排擠 and I understand it, there are struggles like that, there are troubles. 我能理解,這其中有很多煎熬跟困難 I would recommend the first thing you do, the very first thing, 我給你的第一個建議,第一個 is to remember that our friends and our family and every other person who is 是記得,我們的家人朋友,或是任何一個還沒轉純素的人 not yet vegan on this planet, is not our enemy, they are not our enemies. 都不是我們的敵人,任何一個都不是 They cannot help it, just like we couldn't help it before we were vegan. 他們就是做不到,就像以前的我們也做不到一樣 We didn't know any better. 我們那時也不明事理 It was not our fault that we were all born into a world that has conditioned us to love some animals, 這不是我們的錯,我們來到的這個世界教化我們愛護某些動物 love dolphins, love dogs, love whales, 愛護海豚、狗、鯨魚 kill and eat pigs, cows, chickens, fish. 卻把牛、豬、雞、魚殺來吃 We've been conditioned since school 從小學校就教我們 we need calcium from cow's milk, we need protein from animal flesh. 要喝牛奶獲取鈣質、要吃動物的肉獲取蛋白質 We've been taught these things, we've been told: 我們從小就受這種教育,還被灌輸 “A meal is not a meal unless there is some piece of an animal on there somewhere”. 「如果沒看到幾塊動物的肉,就不算是一餐。」 Our friends and family are no different. 我們的家人朋友也是 They cannot help that they have been born into this world. 來到這個世界他們別無選擇 Don't make them your enemies. 所以不要把他們當敵人 Help them, help raise their awareness. 幫助他們意識到這個問題 How do we do that? 我們該怎麼做? As you know, as being a vegan, most of you here, 身為純素者,你們一定能體會 you gonna get asked a whole lot of questions that seem totally ridiculous. 我們常常被人問很多荒唐的問題 You know, “What about plants, don't plants have feelings too?!” 「難道植物沒有生命嗎?植物也會痛阿!」 I get asked that all the time 我被問過100次了 and it's incredible how serious people are when they ask this. 但很奇妙,他們是認真在問這個問題 And maybe I would have been the same before I understood. 在我還沒明白以前,我或許也會是其中一員 What I would recommend firstly to become an active vegan, 我建議想推廣的純素者,首先是要知道 is to learn the answers to all of these questions. It's easy, 該怎麼回答這些問題,這不難 there's so many websites dedicated to it, 有很多網站都有整理 there's a book called “Eat Like You Care” that is dedicated to answering the 有一本書叫「食踐道德」還有完整的攻略,專門回答 “But what about protein, but what about free range, 「那蛋白質呢?」「那放養雞蛋呢?」 but what about humane, but what about plants”. 「那人道屠宰呢?」「那植物呢?」 When you learn the answers to these, 懂得回答這些問題 this is just basic sales. 只是推銷的基本功 Cut that part out of the video. 剛剛那段剪掉 This is what it is, though, we're trying to sell something to people, 我們是要向人推銷一個東西 we want people to get this, we want people to take it on in their life. 我們要他們搞懂,並融入於生活中 There is a list of objections. 他們會有很多反對的理由 I had plenty myself: “Can I keep big muscles?” 我以前也是,擔心我的肌肉會縮水 Obviously I haven't been doing much training, but you can. 我是沒有練很壯,但你可以 World-record holding strongman's a vegan, 最強壯的世界紀錄保持人就是吃純素 so he proves that, I don't need to. 他是活招牌,我靠他就好了 But there's a whole bunch of objections that we all have. 但反對的理由百百種 When you have objections to something, it makes it easy to say no. 而當你對某件事有歧見時,就很容易抗拒它 You know like, you might speak to a vegan and then you can walk away and think: 就像有些人聽完純素者解釋後,走掉時會想 “Yeah, but...you know, you can't be healthy as a vegan”. 「是沒錯,但吃純素會不健康。」 There are plenty of these as we know, all the questions we get asked. 我們知道會被許多問題質疑 When you run out of objections, when you have no objections left, 但當對方無法再反駁時,想不出其他理由時 that is when something starts to really make sense, 才會真正開始覺得有道理 that is when you actually really want it. 才會真正想要改變 When you got no objections to veganism, 無法再提出反駁 veganism is all that makes sense. 純素生活就會變得再合理不過 And that is when people will become vegan, 人們此時就會轉純素了 when they don't have any objections left or at least not enough, it doesn't outweigh any more the facts. 只要他們理由用盡,或理由太薄弱,無法蓋過事實 It doesn't outweigh the necessity, the moral obligation to become vegan. 無法蓋過我們背負著轉純素的道德義務 As vegans, please learn the answers to all these questions, 身為純素者,請學會該如何回答這些問題 because I remember when I didn't know the answers to them, how frustrating it is, 我還記得,以前不知道怎麼解釋是多挫折 when you know in your heart that this is right and then someone asks you a question and you say: 即使心裡能明辨是非,但遇到有人來挑戰,卻只能說 “Look I don't know, but I know I'm right”. 「我不知道啦,反正這樣做就對了!」 That's not heaps convincing. 這說服不了人 But it's true, you are right, you are on the side of justice, don't forget. 但這是事實阿,你沒錯,你站在正義的一方 And never forget that, but it helps very much, when you try to inspire people to become vegan, 永遠都別忘了這點,但當你試著鼓勵別人轉純素時 to be able to answer all their objections. 能回答所有的問題會非常有幫助 When you answer their objections, don't just say... 在解釋時不要只顧著說 they only wanna hear a little bit, they're probably just asking sometimes to be polite: 他們其實不想聽那麼多,也許只是禮貌才隨便問一下 “Ah, OK, but what about where do you get protein”, just trying to keep the conversation going or something. 「是喔,那你怎麼攝取蛋白質?」只是讓場面不要冷掉 Answer lots of questions. So they say: 繼續回答一堆問題後,就會有人問 “What about plants, don't plants have feelings?” 「那植物呢?植物也會痛阿!」 and you can sit them down here and: “Listen, my friend...” 你就可以要他們坐下來促膝長談 No, you can say, look, what I always say is: “Good question”. 不是啦,我都說「好問題。」 I answer questions like they're the first time I've been asked: 我會裝做第一次遇到有人這麼問 “Good question. I had that question too. 「好問題,我以前也想過, Plants don't have feelings, they don't have a central nervous system, 但植物沒有感覺,它們沒有中樞神經 no brain no pain. They don't feel anything as best as we know 沒有大腦,就不會痛,就人類所知,植物毫無感知能力, and we're quite convinced that that's the case". 我們認為這蠻有說服力的, Then: “...but even if plants 但即使植物真的有感覺, did have feelings and you're a plant rights activist or something, 而你是植物權利鬥士之類的, we feed far more plants to animals to fatten them up, six to twelve times more, 餵肥我們吃的動物要消耗更多植物,多達6~12倍, so there are far more plant casualties from feeding plants to animals". 所以吃動物會造成更多植物的傷亡。」 So you've answered 2 things there, we're wasting so much food. 你已同時解釋了另一件事——我們浪費太多糧食 Then you can talk about: 接著說 “And all this grain, all this food that we're giving these animals, 「這些穀物,這些用來餵食動物的糧食, often we're importing this food from countries with the highest problems with starvation and malnutrition. 大多來自自營養不良及饑荒問題最為嚴重的國家, In fact, all this food we are wasting, giving to animals to fatten them up 實際上,我們浪費大量糧食來餵肥動物, and only getting so little food in return, all that food, 但只能換取少量的肉, we could use so much more effectively, so much more efficiently. 這些糧食能更有效地運用,發揮更大功能, We could stop wasting it 停止浪費糧食 and we could start putting it to these places who really need it and leaving it there”. 把這些糧食留在當地,留給真正需要的這些國家。」 You've answered three questions there, they're like: “Oh god,I wasn't expecting all that”. 你已經解釋了三件事,他們會想「想不到他來真的。」 When someone says: “Where do you get protein?”, 如果有人問「那你怎麼攝取蛋白質?」 you go: “Good question, that's what everyone wants to know. 你能說「好問題,每個人都很好奇我怎麼攝取蛋白質, Where I get protein? Protein is found abundantly in plant foods: 植物本身就富含蛋白質, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and legumes, it's in there. 蔬菜、水果、穀類、堅果、種籽和豆類都有蛋白質, I know, I didn't believe it either, it is and it's good quality protein”. 是的,我以前也不敢相信,而且植物性蛋白相當優質。」 Then you can explain: 你可以繼續解釋 “In fact, every single nutrient that you need can be found in those foods 「任何人體所需的營養素,其實都能從植物中獲得, and there are more deficiencies on average in a standard diet than in a vegan diet”. 平均來說,一般飲食所缺乏的營養比純素飲食還來得多呢!」 So then you've answered that, are there any other deficiencies? 又解決了一個問題 Boom, we don't need to talk about iron, we don't need to about vitamin D. 是否會缺乏其他營養素也一併回答了 And then you can say: 接著你能說 “In fact, the world record holding strong man is a vegan, 「事實上,最強壯的世界紀錄保持人就是純素者, Mr. Universe is a vegan, world record holding ultra marathoner is a vegan” 環球先生、超級馬拉松的世界紀錄保持人,也都是純素者喔!」 and they're like: “OK, I get it, you can be super healthy and ripped and muscly as a vegan”. 他們會回答「好好好,我知道了,吃純素可以超級健康、超級壯。」 When someone asks: 如果有人問 “What about free range?” 「若買放養雞蛋呢?」 cause this is a good question, people generally believe free range is good enough. 這問題很好,一般人都以為不把動物關起來就行了 You can say: 你可以說 “There is no use of animals that is OK, all animal use is exploitation and it is all wrong. 「不管是以任何形式利用動物都不正確,所有的方式都是在剝削他們,都是不對的, No matter how good these animals might have it, 無論這些動物受到多良好的對待, even though free-range usually means next to nothing for animals, 雖然說放養通常只是幌子, no matter how good they might have it, they all end up at the same slaughterhouse". 但不管牠們被照顧得多妥善,終究還是要面臨屠宰。」 You can explain that to them and then you can explain more about what happens to dairy, 解釋完後,可進一步說明乳品、雞舍的真相 what happens on the egg farms, what happens in these "humane" places, 說明這些「人道」的場所 that is so far from humane, that it's impossible not to see it, 為何與「人道」相差十萬八千里,只要知道了這些事實 when you hear it, when you understand it. 就不可能否認它的殘酷 You can answer many questions in one 你能一次解釋到許多問題 and that's what I'd recommend you do, cut through those objections as fast as possible. 我也建議這樣,盡快破除他們反對的理由 A good question to ask people is: “So what now is stopping you from becoming vegan, 再反問他們有意義的問題「目前你轉純素的困難是什麼? what's stopping you from becoming, how can I help you become vegan?” 你的困擾是什麼?我該怎麼幫你?」 It's a great question, it puts it back on them now: “Huh, good question, I don't know". 問得好,現在輪到他們回答了「嗯……好問題,不知道, And - "maybe just I don't have any recipes” - “OK, here's some recipes”. 可能因為我沒什麼純素食譜。」「我這有。」 - “Oh, I don't think the food's good” - “Here's some delicious food” 「看起來不是很好吃。」「我這還有超好吃的。」 - “ I think it's expensive” - “Potatoes are, cheap my friend”. 「應該很貴吧?」「老兄,馬鈴薯一直都很便宜。」 We can do it, it's easy. 我們能辦到,這不難 This is important, this is what we need to do, 卻很重要,這是我們推廣者的職責 we need to help people become vegan - our job as activists. 我們要幫助別人轉純素 Something I've noticed amongst all you beautiful people and in the vegan community in general 在你們這群善良的人中,在純素者的圈子裡,我發現一件事 and this surprises me not at all and I was there not long ago too and I still go there sometimes, 我的發現並不讓我意外,因為過去我也有一樣的狀況,雖然我偶爾還是會犯 even though I believe now it's not effective. 但我知道這樣做幫助不大 Less effective. 效果有限 What I've noticed, what you probably noticed too, 我發現,你可能也有發現 is the harsh way that these conversations can go sometimes, 當我們在勸說時,對話常常會變得很尖銳 the aggressive way, the insulting, the name calling, 帶有攻擊性,各種侮辱、蠻罵 the fight that happens between a vegan and a person who's not yet vegan. 純素者與尚未轉純素的人之間的戰爭 It doesn't need to be like this and in fact I think we are doing animals a disservice 事情不用演變成這樣,我認為這種溝通對動物而言 by communicating with people in this way. 反而是幫倒忙 I'd like to give you an example, 舉個例子 when I was in Melbourne doing a talk and usually I talk about my own journey 有一次我在墨爾本演講,我通常分享我轉變的歷程 and try to inspire people to become vegan. 鼓勵大家轉純素 And half way through, two people walked into my speech, walked into the talk and they sat down. 過程中,有兩個人走進來,坐下來聽我的演講 They were glaring at me, 他們瞪著我 had their arms folded and they're looking at me like this. 雙手抱胸,像這樣 And I was thinking: “Wow, I think I'm about to throw down”. 我心裡想「糟糕,有人要來踢管了。」 It was a husband and it was his wife. They glared at me the whole time, 他們是一對夫妻,從頭到尾都瞪著我 they didn't laugh at the parts I think are funny and they did not clap at the end. 我在搞笑時他們沒笑,結束時也沒拍手 I was like: "OK, something up, something's weird about these two, 我想「不太對勁,這兩個人怪怪的, they're in the wrong room, I don't know why they're here". 他們故意走到別人的地盤要做什麼?」 Question-and-answer, the guy puts his arm up: 到了問答時間,那位先生舉起手 “James, that's all well and good, but what about the farmers?” 「James,你說的都非常理想,但畜牧業者該怎麼辦?」 Good question, that is a good question, where do you get protein, not complicated. 好問題,問得好,蛋白質的問題很單純 What about the farmers? That's a more complicated question. 畜牧業者的問題複雜多了 But there is an answer to every single one of these objections. 但所有的質疑都有相對的解答 I learned he's a dairy farmer, I say: “My friend, yes, 我知道他是酪農業者,於是說 we need to look after the farmers, of course we do, 「沒錯,我們要考量到畜牧業者,這是當然, it's not their fault that they've been born into this as well. 生在這樣的體制並不是你們的錯, We need to look after you guys too. But not at the expense of someone else, ever. 我們也要考量到你們,但這個產業不該把其他性命來當犧牲品, And also, animal agriculture is completely unsustainable, 而且畜牧業完全不永續, you're going to have to change sooner or later anyway. 遲早你們都會面臨轉型, Make it sooner, that way we'll do less damage and we'll have far less animals killed. 提早轉型能降低傷害,也能大幅減少殺死的動物, Also, you can transfer your farms into many different things that will still get you profit and revenue. 你能把農場轉為各種不同的經營模式,繼續盈利 There are options here”. 解決的方案有很多。」 That was a short answer of his question. 我簡單回答了他的問題 And we started going at it, back and forth, back and forth. 然後就開始了,他繼續問,我繼續答 This went on for about 20 minutes, right? 來來回回了二十幾分鐘 And I was starting to get a little bit agitated, because it was full on, I had a whole crowd of people, 我開始有點焦躁了,因為他的攻勢很猛烈,我有一大群聽眾 he's asking me some fairly challenging questions, good ones. 他的問題卻相當有挑戰性,不好回答 And at the end of the day, we should never put profit over valuing someone's life 但不管怎麼說,我們都不該把利益置於生命之上 and that was my bottom line there. 這是我們的理念 But other people started to chime in and they started to say their piece. 但這時其他人也開始插話,而且對他們一點都不客氣 And I tried to be respectful, I tried to be kind and understanding that this person is not the enemy, 我試著保持禮貌跟友善,試著諒解他們,他們不是敵人 the system is the enemy, the paradigm that animals are here for us to use is the enemy. 體制才是,人類能任意利用動物的價值觀才是我們的敵人 But not everyone...I mean, so the people in the crowd started getting a little bit hostile towards him, 但不是每個人……有些聽眾開始對他們產生敵意 because he was being slightly condescending, 因為他的態度有點高傲 slightly insulting, you know, 有點無禮 like he was coming from not a very nice place. 像在找碴 And I felt the energy in the room change and I started feeling agitated. 我感覺到氣氛變了,而我也開始焦躁起來 This is normal, when someone writes to you: “Yum yum yummy yummy bacon bacon bacon”, 這很正常,就像看到網路上的留言「超好吃der,培根超好吃der。」 which is common, 這最沒梗 and when they say: 或是 “Ah, that's such a cute lamb, it would look so good on my BBQ”, 「好可愛的小羊寶寶,好想把牠烤來吃。」 or when they say: “Vegans, stop shoving your opinions down our throats” - 或是「你們動保人士不要強迫別人該怎麼做。」 and if anyone's shoving an opinion down their throat, it's literally the people who aren't vegan, 雖然真正強迫別人的,正是葷食者,強迫動物以死 shoving an opinion, quite literally down their own throat. 來滿足自己的口腹之慾 So, it's frustrating 這些都很令人受挫 and you get anxious and you get agitated and you get angry. 於是你會開始焦躁、開始心急,進而生氣 This is what was happening to me. 我當時就是這樣 Now we have three options, this is how I say it: 這時會有三種做法 We have three options when it comes to communicating with others. 我都說「當我們在跟別人溝通時,有三種做法。」 Option A): You start up here, they start down there. 做法一,你的層次比較高,對方則比較低 You're trying to be kind, you're trying to be respectful, you're trying to be understanding 你試圖包容他們、尊重他們、同理他們 and this person brings you down. 但他們拉低了你的層次 They're not being...like they're being insulting, you get into a slinging match of insults, of name calling 他們辱罵你,雙方陷入脣槍舌戰與互相叫囂 and you go down and you both go like this. 於是你的層次下降,變得跟他們一樣 That is the least effective type of communication. 這是最無效的溝通方式 Their defenses are up, in fact you might even push them further 對方會豎起防衛心,事實上,你還可能加深了他們的成見 into their already believes that veganism is wrong, you can push them further into that... 使他們更加不認同純素主義 Second option: they're insulting, they're condescending, 第二種做法 they're getting you angry, they're trying to push your buttons 他們態度無禮、氣燄高張,挑釁你、企圖激怒你 and you stay here. 但你維持原有的風度 And you can remain calm, peaceful and respectful. 保持冷靜與和緩的情緒,給予尊重 This is a better form of communication, because you are keeping your cool, 保持冷靜與和緩的情緒,給予尊重,你不情緒化 you are sticking to the facts and they kinda look a bit silly. 只陳述事實,相較之下,他們顯得有點無知 Better. 這方式有效多了 The third, the effective form of communication 第三種,最有效的溝通方式 and this will happen to you, I'm telling you that, 你一定能做到,真的,相信我 because it happened to me. 因為我就做到了 We can bring people up. 我們能提升對方的層次 They can bring you down, we can bring them up. 他們能拉低我們,我們也能提升他們 If you stay respectful of this person as an individual, 我們必須尊重對方是獨立的個體 if you respect that they have an opinion that is different to yours... 彼此會有不同的想法 you don't need to respect the opinion, 你不必尊重他們的看法 but you can respect that they have it and you can treat this human, 但要尊重他們與我們意見相左 who is a victim of this conditioning, just like we were, with understanding. 如此你就能把他們視為跟我們一樣遭到同化的受害者,就能諒解他們 When they're throwing this insults at you, they're gonna know: 等他們攻擊久了就會發現 “OK, this isn't really fun, 「好吧,不好玩,這些人不會被激怒, this person isn't biting, they're not playing my game and they look very much chilled. 他們不吃這套,而且還很淡定, I'm gonna come up there”. 我也要認真起來。」 Then you can have effective communication, you can plant seeds. 這時你做了最有效的溝通,在對方心中埋下種子 This is where the seeds that are planted sprout into something special. 這顆種子會發芽 With this man, I felt…and that sounds easy, 雖然聽起來很容易 I know, I'm saying that it's easy, let me explain how to do that. 但事實上真的很容易,我來說明如何辦到 This man and the vibe of the room started changing, I got agitated 當時現場的氛圍漸漸改變,我開始焦躁起來 and I felt it and I felt like we're all kind of dropping down and we'll have a fight. 我感覺大家好像要抄傢伙打架了 And something I've learned through hundreds of hours of meditation 我從許多個小時的靜坐中學到一件事 is that when we have an uncomfortable sensation, 當我們感到不愉快時 we wanna run from it, we don't wanna feel it, we want to escape. 就會想逃避,想脫離這種情緒,我們想避開 Or we want to resist it, "I don't wanna feel like this, I feel so angry, I hate this feeling". We fight it. 想阻擋「我不想要這麼憤怒,我討厭這種感覺。」我們會抗拒 A better technique: to come out of that suffering and to not add layers, 而更好的辦法是——不再加深不愉快,並擺脫它們 you're already feeling it, 你已經感受到不愉快 don't add another layer by saying “and I don't want to feel like this”, another layer of resistance. 不必再繼續想著「我討厭這種情緒。」這是額外的抵抗 When you feel like that, when someone's pushing your buttons, 當你不愉快時,有人挑釁你 getting you mad about whatever, bacon and all that, you can say, 惹你生氣時,故意說培根之類的 you go into yourself, don't run from it, feel it, what does that sensation feel like, 面對你的憤怒、不要逃避,感受它、感受這種感覺 what does that anger feel like, observe it, don't run. 感受憤怒的感覺,審視它,不要逃避 And when you observe it, 當你審視它時 you teach yourself that you can handle it, you teach yourself you don't need to run, 告訴自己你能處理它,告訴自己不須要逃 you don't need to go down to that level. You're not going to help the animals down there, 不須要陷入那種情緒,陷下去對動物沒有幫助 not very much, maybe, but rarely. 就算真的有,也很有限 You stay cool and this is what happened in this situation with these dairy farmers. 要保持平靜,在跟這對夫妻交涉時,我就是這麼做的 And I went into this place, “OK, hang on” and I just felt what was going on, 我進入這種模式,我跟自己說「等等。」我開始感受這整件事 I just accepted it, “there's agitation, that's OK”. 並接受它「我有點煩躁,不過沒關係。」 And I went to this Buddha place man, Buddha ass. 於是我到達了開悟的境界,開悟成佛的境界 “Listen my friend, I understand where you're coming from, 「聽著,朋友,我能理解你的心情, I used to feel just the same, I understand you're resistant to this conversation, 我也曾經像你一樣,我知道你排斥這樣的討論, because its questioning values that you've had for a long time, 因為這是在質疑你長久以來的價值觀, I fully understand that, but understand where we're coming from - 我完全能體會,但也請你體會我們的感受, that this is wrong, what is happening to them, 我們覺得動物遭到不當的對待, profit is not a good justification for enslaving, torturing and killing innocent beings”, 圖利不該成為奴役、虐待、宰殺無辜生靈的理由。」 et cetera et cetera. 等等等等 I said: "So I gotta stop with you, we've got only with 20 minutes, there's other questions here". 「我沒辦法再回答你了,我們只有20分鐘,別人還有問題。」 Answered a few more questions, the next question was “How do you stay so calm?!” 回答一些問題後,有人發問了「你怎麼能脾氣這麼好?」 Good question, that's what I'm trying to teach you right now. 好問題,這就是我今天教大家的 And this is a question I get asked a lot, 我很常被問這個問題 on online communication as well. 在網路上也是 So after that, I was chilling, talking to some people, 演講結束後,我很平靜,在跟一些聽眾聊天時 he comes over with his wife - his wife was glaring at me at least as much as he was. 這對夫妻走過來,太太看我的眼神比剛開始友善多了 Comes over, shook my hand, he goes: 他們走來跟我握手,先生說 “James, what about this? James, what about that?” 「James,那這個呢?James,但那個呢?」 A few more questions, fair enough, a long list of objections. 還沒問完,沒關係,我知道有很多 I answered his questions, he said: 回答完他所有的問題後,他說 “Well you've just got an answer for everything, don't you, buddy". 「你真的回答得出所有的問題嘛,老兄。」 I said: “Well, there is an answer for everything, man” 我說「所有的問題都有解答。」 and he said: “Well maybe I'll call you later, if I got more questions". 他說「那我想到其他問題再打給你。」 And I said: "Well, I'll be hanging by the phone, man”. 我說「我不會漏接的。」 He shook my hand, he said...he smiled, 他握了握我的手,笑了 I mean, during our conversation, when anyone else was getting a bit involved, he was getting angry, 在我們之前談話的過程中,有其他人在場的時候 he almost stormed out of there a few times. 有好幾次他都差點爆走離開會場 He smiled, he shook my hand, we had a joke, 但他卻笑了,跟我握手,還開了幾句玩笑 his wife said to me: 他的太太跟我說 “Thank you for opening our eyes to this way of thinking”. 「謝謝你打開了我們的視野,接觸到這個概念。」 And I was like...“No ways”. 我心想「我在做夢嗎?」 It is a powerful way to communicate when you remember that they are not the enemy. 這個溝通方式非常有效,記住,對方不是敵人 I have some quotes that helped me so much when it comes to communication, and it's: 另外,在溝通時,有幾句名言給了我許多幫助 “Hate the sin, but love the sinner”. 「鄙視罪惡,但愛那犯罪的人。」 If someone is doing something you don't agree with, 要是有人做了你不認同的事 you know if someone you love is purchasing animal products, you can say: 要是你愛的人購買了動物產品,你能說 “I love you, I respect you, 「我愛你,我尊重你, I will never respect your decision to pay people to harm animals for you, 即使我絕不尊重付錢請人代勞傷害動物的行為, but I love you”. 我還是愛你。」 You don't need to hate the whole person, 你不必厭惡這個人 it's just that action. 你厭惡的是他的行為 “Don't blame and shame people, inform and explain”. 「不責怪,不批判,告知並解釋。」 That was a quote that just slipped out of my mouth one day, 這句是我無意中說出來的 I was like: “Uh oh I'll write that down, that rhymed, sounds good”. 好像不賴,趕快寫下來,很有韻律感 “Don't blame and shame, inform and explain”. 「不責怪,不批判,告知並解釋。」 The facts are powerful enough, the truth is powerful enough, 事實堅不可摧,真相牢不可破 you do not have to lie, you do not have to yell, 你不必說謊,事實勝於雄辯 you don't have to make someone feel terrible, the facts will do that themself. 你不必引起別人的罪惡感,真相本身就會 “Don't blame and shame, inform and explain”. 「不責怪,不批判,告知並解釋。」 Thirdly: 第三個 “Forgive them, for they know not what they do” 「原諒對方的無知之過。」 Forgive them, it's not their fault, 原諒他們,這不是他們的錯 please try to remember that when we're dealing with these people. 以後請記得,這不是他們的錯 These two dairy farmers walked out of that talk that day with a smile on their face. 這對酪農業者當天離開時,帶著的是笑容 With a good taste in their mouth about vegans, thinking: 對純素者留下好的印象 “Wow, there's actually something to this whole vegan thing”. 想著「原來純素的背後還有這些涵義。」 They could have walked out of there - and they nearly did - thinking: 他們原本可能——幾乎是差點——離開時想的是 “Oh, vegans, oh my god, I can't wait to tell all my friends, what idiots, 「這群吃素的人真是夠了,我等不及要告訴大家,一群白癡胡言亂語, they make no sense, I hate them, they're so angry". 超討厭!在激進什麼阿?」 There's an angry vegan vibe, yes, and some activists are effective in this aggressive approach 的確是有激進的派系,有些推廣者用激進的作法的確有效 and I'm not saying...look, if that resonates with you, cool, do it. 如果你喜歡那種方式,沒問題,就去做 Do I think that's the way that we're going to reach the most amount of people? 但激進的方式能改變大部分的人嗎? I don't. 我不這麼認為 Through my own experience, that's not the case. 這是依我個人的經驗所做的判斷 We reach people when we talk to them with understanding. 我們的包容才能改變更多的人 That has been my experience and I believe for most people here, who are peaceful, kind, respectful people, 這是我的體悟,我相信這裡大部分的人,都愛好和平、有同情心並尊重他人 talk to them in the way that you wish someone spoke to you before you were vegan. 你希望別人在你轉純素前怎麼勸你,你就那樣勸別人 And if a kind way resonates with you - OK, do what feels right for you - 如果你喜歡包容的方式,很棒,各展所長 but I do believe that the best way is to come from a peaceful place. 但我相信最好的作法,是和平的方式 This is something that we all have a responsibility for. 推廣是我們的責任 As Einstein said: 愛因斯坦說過 “Those who have the privilege to know, have the duty to act”. 「知道的人,就有責任行動。」 Every single person here, who has made the connection, 在座每一個人,都能同理動物的處境 has a duty to act on behalf of animals. 你們有責任為動物採取行動 And take that seriously, 認真以待 because this is not some mundane diet choice, 因為這不只是一般的飲食選擇 this is the difference between enslavement and freedom, 這是攸關「自由」或「奴役」 between torture and peace, between death and life. 「和平」或「苦難」、「生」或「死」 This is serious and you understand it and you are a part of this revolution. 你已經知道了它的急迫性,你就是革命的一分子 One person does make a difference and together we are changing the world. 一個人能有所作為,團結起來,我們則能改變世界 Thank you. 謝謝
