Now, of course giving a presentation is never easy, ok嗎?當然,要做一個很棒的簡報並不是一件容易的事 especially when it is in another language which is not your native language -- you're 尤其是當那其語言並非是你的母語的時候 going to face some special challenges. And as a corporate trainer who has worked with 你將要面臨一些特別的挑戰。而身為企業訓練員的我曾經與許多來自世界各國的人一起工作 people from all over the world, I can tell you that giving a presentation is difficult, 我可以告訴你,要做好一份簡報是十分困難的 but it is also one of the most effective ways to improve your English and also to increase 但它是其中一種最有效的方法能讓你增進英文能力,也能增加 your level of confidence as a professional speaking in English. Okay? So let's look at 你說英文的自信。好,那我們現在來看 some of the strategies that you can follow in order to give a presentation that is more 某些在做簡報上的技巧性,而你便可以遵循以下的訣竅使你的簡報更為成功 successful. All right, so I've divided the board into 因此我將白板分成 two sections; the first part is things that you should do, and in the second part we'll 兩的部分,第一部分是你要做到的,而第二部分 talk about things you should not do. So the first thing that you must remember when you're 我將會談到的是你不該做的。第一你要記得的是,當你在 speaking in English and giving a presentation is to use simple language. Many people feel 發表英文簡報的時候,你必須使用簡單、明瞭的英文用語。很多人常常認為 that their English is not good enough and so they try to use very complicated words. 他們的英文能力不夠好,因此他們總想要嘗試使用複雜、難以理解的詞語 However, if you're not comfortable with those words or you're not sure of the meaning of 然而,你卻對那些單字或詞語很不熟悉,甚至是你可能不確定它真正之意義 those words, it's not going to go over very well. Simple, clear communication is powerful, 因此這不是好的策略。簡單、清晰的溝通是十分強大,讓人易理解的 so try to remember that point. Okay? Next: speak slowly. Because you have an accent 所以試著去記住這點,好嗎?接下來,說慢一點。因為你有口音 -- and everyone has an accent --, but perhaps if you have an accent and English is not your 每個人也都有口音,也許你有口音而英文又不是 native language, it's going to be a little bit harder for people to understand you so 你的母語,這將會使得你的聽眾要理解你的簡報內容的困難度稍微提升,所以 you need to speak much more slowly than you think. So however slowly you think you're 你必須要說的慢一些,比你所想的還要再更慢一些。所以想的慢一些 speaking, speak a little more slowly. It will only make it easier for other people to understand 說的再慢一點。這樣會使得聽眾們更容易的理解清楚 exactly what you're saying. Okay? All right. The next point is to make sure to have your 你所要表達的內容,好嗎?下一個是要確認 visuals professionally edited. Make sure that a native English speaker or an editor has 簡報完整性。確保找一個英文母語者或是專業的編輯者 checked all your visuals. There is nothing that compromises the professionalism of a 檢查你的簡報。在決定簡報的專業度時 presentation more than seeing grammatical errors or spelling errors in the visuals. 確認沒有文法和拼字錯誤是最重要的 So make sure to have your visuals professionally edited. 因此要確保你的簡報完整性 The next thing you want to do is to make sure to use more verbs rather than nouns. When 下一點是:你必須使用動詞的量比名詞還多 you use a lot of nouns it makes... It makes anything that you hear much heavier and difficult 當你使用名詞時,會使得.....像是沒有讓你真的很容易的理解到其中的涵義 to understand. Let me give you a little example of that. Okay? One second. Okay, so for example, 我舉個例子。等我一下,例如 if I say: "The delivery of the package took place on Sunday afternoon." That's okay. It's 如果我說:我收到包裹的時間是在星期日下午。 not impossible to understand, but let's compare it to this: "The post office delivered the 這很容易理解。但是比起這個:郵局寄送 package on Sunday afternoon." It's much easier in the second example because I used verbs 包裹在星期日下午。比較起來第二個是比較容易了解的,因為我使用了動詞 rather than nouns. Okay? Next point: use active verbs rather than passive 而非名詞。ok嗎?接下來看,多使用主動動詞而非被動動詞 verbs. Let me give you another example. "5000 apartments were rented by ABC Housing last 讓我再的例子:5000間公寓在上個月被ABC房屋租走了 month." That's an example of using passive verbs. "5000 apartments were rented", right? 那是一個被動動詞的句型。5000間公寓被租走了,對吧? Let's contrast that with the active verb. "ABC Housing rented 5000 apartments last month." 那讓我們來比較主動動詞的句型。ABC房屋在上個月租了5000間公寓 Okay? So you can see it's much easier when you use the active verbs. 而你可以發現到,當你使用主動動詞時,是不是簡單多了 The next point is if possible at all, try to work with a trainer. Try to work with a 下一個是:如果可以的話,試著找個可以訓練你的人,試著和 professional English trainer or a presentations coach who can help you to improve your presentation 專業的英文訓練員或簡報專家合作,讓他們可以幫助你,增進你的簡報能力 skills, who can give you feedback on how to improve; what mistakes you're making, what 也能給予意見,說明你要改進的地方。是哪裡有錯誤 are your strengths and weaknesses. It will be very, very helpful to you so try to do 哪些是你的強項,哪些是你的缺點。如果你做到的話,那對你會是十分有幫助的 that if you have the opportunity. Okay? The next point is to use a lot of transition 若是你有機會的話,好嗎?下一點是,大量使用連接詞 words in your presentation. This helps your listener to know where you're going. So you 當你在演說簡報的時後。這會幫助你的聽眾們知道你在說什麼,所以 can say, for example: "furthermore", "nevertheless", "on the contrary". These words explain to 你可以說,像是:此外,然而,相反地。用這些話用來解釋 your listener what you're trying to say with even more clarity than if you did not use 給你的聽眾們會使得更清楚、明瞭。 the words. So try to get accustomed to using transition words. 所以要習慣使用連接詞 Another important point, especially in different parts of the world is to make sure to write 另外重要的一點是,特別在某些地方要確保寫下 down any important numbers. You need to write them down so that people can see them clearly 重要所想要傳達的數字。你必須寫下數字讓聽眾們可以清楚看到 and also because in some parts of the world, numbers are described or said in different 也因為世界某些地方,所表達數字的方法也不大相同 ways. So for example: this number is what? "One hundred thousand", but in India for example they call this "one lakh". So 舉個例子:100,000 十萬,但在印度他們稱作一萬盧比 one lakh is different from saying one hundred thousand. And if your audience is not familiar 一萬盧比和十萬是不一樣的表達數字的說法,而要是當你的聽眾對這些相當不熟悉 with the term "one lakh" or with the term "one hundred thousand" then you want to make 像是盧比,或是十萬,那你就得必須 sure you have written the number down so it is 100% clear. All right? 確保你寫下明確的數字,百分之百的簡單又清楚,對吧 So these are examples of things you should do; now let's look at some things you should 因此那些要點是你要做的,而現在我們來看一些你不該做的 not do. All right? Don't use abbreviations, or acronyms, or short forms of names of organizations 禁止使用縮寫、字頭語或是組織的縮寫形式 or anything else from your country which other people are not familiar with. Right? Say the 或是任何來自你國家的但其他聽眾們卻無法理解的。好嗎?說出 entire name and then afterwards you can use the abbreviation once you have explained it. 全名,而再那之後,一旦你需要解釋的話,便可以使用縮寫 You also want to avoid jargon. Now, what is jargon? Jargon is the special kind of language 你也必須避免使用過多專業術語,那什麼是 jargon呢? jargon指的是專業的術語 that people who are in a special, in a particular field use when they speak to each other. So 當人們在某些領域方面是專家,他們所使用的專業術語 for example: if you listen to computer guys speaking to each other, you will feel like 像是:當你在聽到電腦工程師在與對方互相說話時,你也許會覺得 you landed on another planet because they speak language that only they can understand. 你降落在另一個星球一樣,因為他們所說的語言只有他們能理解 So when you're speaking to a general audience, you want to avoid using jargon. Just use regular 因此當你面對的聽眾是一般大眾,你得避免使用專業術語,使用簡單、易理解詞語即可 plain English to explain what you mean, that way you will reach more members of your audience. 簡白的英文,而再去解釋你所要表達的意思,這樣一來你會吸引更多的聽眾 Okay? Also, make sure you avoid slang. Even though ok? 還有,避免使用俚語,即使 you might hear native English speakers using slang in their presentations, it's best that 可能你會聽到美國人使用俚語在他們的簡報中,但最好還是盡量避免使用 you don't use it, especially if you're not familiar with how to use it. The worst thing 尤其你不大熟悉如何運用俚語。最糟糕的是 is when we hear non-native English speakers using slang in an incorrect way because that 幫你聽見那些非英文母語的人使用錯誤的表達方式使用俚語的時候 doesn't sound professional at all. All right? And another point is to avoid crutch words. 便只會顯得你並不專業。另外一個要點是:避免使用不當語助詞 Now, what's a crutch word? For that you have to know: what's a crutch? Well, crutches are 那什麼是crutch word? 知道之前你必須了解 crutch是什麼,而它的意思是 what people use... you know, for example: if someone has broken their leg, they might 當人們使用....恩你知道的,像是當某個人摔斷了腳,他們必須 use something like this to walk along and they, these crutches, these sticks support 使用某些東西去支撐他們走路像是這個。這些拐杖支撐著 them while they're walking let's say with a broken leg. Right? Similarly, when people 他們,當他們再走路的時候,我們稱骨折,對吧,同樣地,當人們 are nervous, they sometimes use sounds instead of words while they're thinking of the right 緊張、思考的時候,人們有時候會使用聲音而非字詞 thought or word. So they might say: "Mm, ah, for example, uh, like, uh, yeah", and things 像:"Mm, ah, for example, uh, like, uh, yeah"諸如此類的 like that. These are crutch words and they're often used by people who are not sure what 這些語助詞常被視為是人們並不確定的接下來所要說的內容是什麼 word to say next. So avoid crutch words or sounds. Silence is okay if you're thinking. 所以要避免使用語助詞和聲音。當你在思考時,沉默是可以的 So while you're thinking, try to keep your mouth closed and avoid these crutch sounds. 所以當你在思考的時候,試著讓你的嘴巴閉上,也避免有不當的語助詞出現 So these are some basic DOs and DON'Ts -- right? -- for giving a presentation in English.
