Universal basic income,
also popularly called
Unconditional basic income, is the notion of giving people a regular stipend regardless of their socioeconomic status or employment.
This income would be enough to cover a person's basic needs
Although some advocates propose a basic income as a viable solution for today's economy
It is frequently cited as a solution for the employment problems of the future
Many professionals theorize that jobs that used to be done by people
Will one day be conducted by machines and artificial intelligence
Leaving a great many people out of work
In order to protect those who are unemployed or to prevent a collapse of capitalism a
universal basic income would be enacted.
Optimists posit that there are potential benefits to such a future.
People would have more free time to pursue their own interests
Or to pursue a job they truly wanted not the job they needed just to survive
More people could spend time being creative exploring the arts
How beautiful!
Skeptics aren't so sure a basic income would be compatible with human nature
Would we really spend all our time being creative, or would we regress to instant gratification machines? For example,
spending all our time in virtual worlds
Would we even value one another in a world where there was no sense that the economy was a result or collective efforts?
Is universal basic income a viable solution for the problems caused by automation? If so where will the money come from?
Can it be sustainable?
Will machines really one day run our economy? What path would you pursue if you received an unconditional basic income?
I wouldn't be doing these voiceovers that's for damn sure! If you enjoyed this video
