  • (slow piano music)

  • - Well good morning.

  • We are headed out to some sunflower fields

  • outside of Kansas City today.

  • - [Elise] This one's pretty.

  • - [Isaac] This is so cool that we can do that!

  • (music swells)

  • (shutter click)

  • - [Jeremy] Did you get a good picture?

  • (footsteps)

  • Whoa, you almost fell.

  • - There's (talking over each other) Smilies!

  • - 'Kay, so guys, first I want us to look at the stem.

  • Does it look like a strong stem, or a weak stem?

  • - [Kids] Strong.

  • - Do you think the sunflower seeds are in there?

  • - [Caleb] Yep, right? In here.

  • - 'Kay, so look guys, these are the sunflower seeds!

  • So can you believe somebody came up and was like,

  • "Hey, we should try eating these!"

  • So there's how the sunflower seeds are nestled in there

  • and then you can just pull 'em out.

  • - [Elise] I got it!

  • - [Kendra] You did, you got one!

  • - This is the part that we actually eat,

  • but it has to be roasted and dried.

  • - So I'm having the kids each take a picture of a flower

  • so that they can draw them on the way home

  • in their nature journals.

  • (soft, jazzy piano with percussion)

  • - It's kinda cute, 'cause the kids keep getting lost

  • because they're shorter than the sunflowers?

  • And Jeremy and I are tall enough

  • that we can see where we're going,

  • but it's so cute, 'cause they're like,

  • "Wait, this way? This way?"

  • They could easily get lost out here.

  • We'll keep good track of 'em.

  • So this is a beautiful farm outside of Kansas City

  • called Grinter Farms,

  • and they offer this free to the public,

  • and they're just accepting some donations if you want to,

  • so we're just excited to support

  • this beautiful sunflower place.

  • (energetic synth pop music)

  • - So we were able to find some sunflowers

  • that haven't bloomed yet, so it's really cool

  • 'cause the kids can see the closed bud,

  • and then what it looks like when it's a little bit open,

  • and then all the way open and then the older blooms.

  • This is really cool. And bright.

  • - Yes.

  • (wind, relaxed synth music)

  • (shutter click)

  • - [Kendra] We found a caterpillar crossing the road

  • and the kids were so concerned about it!

  • Jeremy ran out and rescued it.

  • Alright, when we came home and had lunch,

  • and now you know exactly what we're doing, right?

  • It's school time.

  • So, I have to show you guys,

  • Elise has had a huge breakthrough with her reading!

  • I am so stinkin' proud of you! (laughs)

  • So, she is reading this book,

  • she just picked it up on her own yesterday

  • and stood next to me while I was cooking dinner

  • and was reading it to me.

  • And look at these pages!

  • Look at all those words on there!

  • - And...

  • - Here, why don't you read this part to them?

  • - Okay.

  • '"You can (2 second pause) count them,

  • Frog,"

  • (sped up voice) said Toad. "I will be too tired.

  • I am going back to bed."

  • - I'm so proud of you!

  • It's so fun to see her progress.

  • I'm just... I'm just glowing about it, yesterday and today.

  • I'm like, "Oh my goodness!"

  • We're like turning a corner with this,

  • so her reading program we've been using with her,

  • The Logic Of English Foundations, is wonderful.

  • We're really enjoying it, and she's really making

  • a lot of progress with it, so, yay!

  • Go girlfriend. (giggle) Awkward high-five.

  • Caleb, what is it?

  • - A car that can spin.

  • - [Kendra] A car that can spin?

  • - Watch this.

  • - [Kendra] What? (gasps)

  • - And a big weight can also hold it.

  • - [Kendra] You think so?

  • (clatter)

  • - Oopsies...

  • - [Kendra] (chuckles)

  • - [Isaac] Why not (mumble). But don't make the end, (mumble)

  • and if it's right here, okay, so press ...

  • - So Isaac started the typing program last year

  • that we use with our kids,

  • and Elise is starting it this year,

  • so he's helping her get all set up

  • and teaching her the ropes and encouraging her.

  • - [Isaac] So press A, (pause) S, (pause) Space,

  • this is space.

  • Good job! (claps)

  • You're going at five words per minute!

  • You're going way faster than you used to.

  • Remember L?

  • When I started typing, I thought I couldn't really do it,

  • but then the typing program I really liked,

  • and it teaches me really well,

  • so I can now type like 50 words per minute,

  • and I think Elise will get really fast, too.

  • - [Kendra] Is today her first day?

  • - Yeah, and she's only gotten four letters wrong, only four!

  • - [Kendra] That's awesome!

  • - It's my 'vention.

  • - [Kendra] You have an invention?

  • Are you breaking that?

  • - No. (clatter)

  • - [Kendra] Oooh. Are you propelling them?

  • - Yeah, watch! (clatter)

  • - [Kendra] Oh!

  • - It went over my head.

  • (clatters)

  • - [Kendra] Whoa, that one shot way out here!

  • - Whenever you're ready, you count to four,

  • and then we'll start.

  • - One, two, three, four. (plays piano)

  • - [Kendra] What are you giving to Ivy?

  • - Doggy treats.

  • - [Kendra] Doggy treats. - Smells really weird.

  • - [Kendra] Does it smell really weird?

  • - D'augh!

  • - [Kendra] Where do you put the doggy treats?

  • - Inside of that (mumbles).

  • Did you already get it Ivy?

  • - [Kendra] Yep, Ivy got the treats, so now you can

  • put a new one in there!

  • - Uh oh. Can I have it? (piano lessons in background)

  • Uh-uh. He likes me! (giggle)

  • C'mere, Ivy, wanna doggy treat?

  • Yah!

  • - [Kendra] (laughs)

  • - [Caleb] Get it, Ivy! (giggle)

  • - [Kendra] Wuh-oh!

  • - [Caleb] Get it!

  • - [Kendra] Wuh-oh!

  • We definitely need a dog.

  • After we have a baby, dog's the next thing on the list.

  • (piano exercises)

  • - And you're gonna go one with the right hand,

  • your left hand goes back down to the bass clef.

  • - Isaac's learning some fun new songs today,

  • this is the first time he's played through them.

  • - Lots of good things to do for dogs.

  • - [Kendra] You have lots of good things to do for dogs?

  • - Yeeah! (growl, howl)

  • (warm guitar picking)

  • - Dat's a dog! And dat's Superman!

  • A Superdog.

  • - [Kendra] Caleb, are you reading to Ivy?

  • - Look! Ivy!

  • - Caleb's being so cute with Ivy.

  • He's given Ivy more water, he's given Ivy more dog food,

  • he's reading to Ivy, he's playing fetch with Ivy,

  • he loves Ivy.

  • - Me and Ivy are buds today.

  • - [Kendra] Does Ivy just need a little drink now?

  • - Yeah, from doing all that stuff that we...

  • Mom, he needs a little rest I think.

  • - [Kendra] Is he ready for a rest?

  • - Have a nap, Ivy.

  • - [Kendra] Um... Ivy's a girl dog.

  • So my friend is babysitting our kids for an hour,

  • she invited the kids over to play, which is awesome,

  • so I decided to try to get all my grocery shopping done

  • in just one hour.

  • Like, door to door, in and out.

  • So I'm a woman on a mission here.

  • Alright, three things: number one,

  • I'm reminded that I should never shop when I'm hungry,

  • number two, shopping without kids

  • is really faster, and number three,

  • I need to learn how to online grocery shop.

  • I need to. I need to! (grumbles)

  • I did it, I'm done. (pause) (makes bird noise)

  • But I look like a crazy woman.

  • Hopefully there's a short lane.

  • Well, we're having this Frito pie again

  • with some apples and apple dip

  • and Travis and Ashley are here with their family,

  • and it's gorgeous out, so the kids get to eat outside,

  • which is awesome!

  • What do you guys think of the weather?

  • - [Kids] (talking over each other) Good. I like it.

  • - [Kendra] Uh-huh?

  • - [Isaac] It's kinda medium-ish.

  • - [Kendra] It's kinda medium-ish?

  • (kids playing, happy shrieks)

  • - [Boy] If I, if I sing ABCDEFG...

  • (warm soothing synth) (giggling, shrieks)

  • - [Jeremy] Uncle Travis is the tickle monster!

  • (giggling, shouts)

  • - [Man] Is it a frog?

  • - [Boy] I think it's a toad.

  • - [Younger Boy] Yeah.

  • - [Man] It's a toad?

  • - [Boy] It's bigger.

  • - [Man] How can you tell it's a toad and not a frog?

  • - Hike! Ohh! What a play!

  • - Ohh! - Go Michael! Run!

  • - Go Michael! Run! - He's running! He's going!

  • - Yeah! - Oh no!

  • (warm soothing synth)

  • - Cherry trifle for dessert.

  • - [Man] So good.

  • It has pudding and whipped cream and angel food cake.

  • - [Elise] Goodnight. J House out.

  • - [Kendra] Caleb wants to wrap it by himself.

  • - (Rustling) Well, I'm good at it.

  • - [Kendra] You are, you're very good at it.

  • You need any help, just let me know.

  • - I need help.

  • - So today I really got into a new band.

  • - I posted a picture on Instagram today

  • of my baby bum and how big it's getting!

(slow piano music)
