But do you know what proverbs are?

但你知道諺語是什麼嗎？

Proverbs are usually short, clever little sentences

諺語通常是又短又精巧的句子

that natives will use in conversation without even realizing it

母語者通常會無意識的在對話中用到

they often offer good arguably arguably good life advice.

諺語通常會給出，可以說是蠻好的人生建議

Today I'm going to talk

今天我要跟你談談

to you about five proverbs and their

meaning and what we would use them.

還有我們會怎麼用

The first proverb that I'd like to talk to you about is

第一句要教你們的諺語是

the grass is always greener

鄰家的草分外青，外國的月亮比較圓

this means that you shouldn't be jealous

這個意思是，你不應該忌妒

of what other people may have or may

其他人可能擁有的

appear to have because they could also

或是好像擁有的，因為他們也可能

be looking at what you have and feeling

在尋找你擁有的事物

jealous as well so quite literally this

並同樣感到忌妒，所以從字面上來看

is probably talking about a neighbor

這句話可能是在說某個人

looking at his neighbor's garden and

看著他鄰居的院子

thinking his grass is greener than my

並覺得鄰居家的草比我家的草綠

grass but it could just be his point of view

但這可能只是他自己的觀點

his neighbor may be looking in his

garden and thinking oh god his grass is greener than mine

想著，天啊，他家的草比我家的還綠

so basically means don't be jealous because it might not be what it seems.

所以基本上意思是，不要忌妒，因為事實可能跟看起來的不一樣

The next proverb is

下個諺語是

don't judge a book by it's cover

不要以一本書的封面來評論它，不要以貌取人

this is another proverb that teaches us that things are not always as they seem.

這一個諺語教我們的是，事物並非如同表面看到的那樣

The proverb tells us to not judge someone

這個諺語告訴我們

by their appearance or the way they

不要因為一個人的外表或穿著

dress or just generally how they look or act.

或他們看起來如何、他們的行為來評論他們

A really old dirty book could have

一個非常老舊、髒污的書籍

an amazing story to tell inside.

可能記載著一個很棒的故事

Or a really beautiful book could be really

或是一本非常華美的書籍

boring inside and so this proverb is

可能真的很無聊，所以這個諺語

talking about books but relating it to people.

說的是跟書有關，但也跟人有關

somebody might have a mohawk and

某個人可能頂著一頭莫霍克髮型

lots of scary makeup and spikes all over

而且濃妝豔抹，身上有很多鉚釘

them but they might also have a kitten

但他們可能也有一個小貓的粉絲專頁

fan page or Instagram you never know

或是 Instagram，但你從來不會知道

so don't judge a book by it's cover.

所以不要以貌取人

The next proverb is when in Rome do as the Romans do

下一個諺語是，當你身處羅馬，就要跟羅馬人做一樣的事，入境隨俗

and this means that when you are visiting somewhere

這句的意思是當你到某個地方去

you should try and act as a local person is considered

你應該試著像當地人一樣行動

respectful and polite i love this one it

這樣會被認為是尊重與禮貌的行為。我喜歡這一個諺語

means that when you travel you need to

它代表當你出外旅行，你需要

adapt to the culture whether that's

適應當地的文化

covering your skin or adapting to their

meal times I think it's really important to respect and adapt to culture

a lot of people could learn from that one actually

The next proverb is

practice makes perfect and this one sort of speaks for itself

練習造就完美，熟能生巧，這一句是不言自明的

you're not going to pick up a violin and

你不可能隨便拿起一支小提琴

play like velde you need to practice the

more you practice the closer you are to achieving perfection

and the same goes for your English practice makes perfect

the last proverb is actually my personal

favorite and it's about determination

it is where there's a will there's a way

it means that if you want to do

something enough then you will find a way of doing it

nothing is impossible there is always a way

沒有什麼事是不可能的，總是會有辦法

I used to say this one to myself a
