  • The first lesson in unit one covers our basic number properties. In this lesson, we are

  • going to cover the associative property, the commutative property, and the distributive

  • property. The associative property states; For all real numbers a, b, & c: (a + b) +

  • c = a + (b + c) and (ab)c = a(bc). The associative property refers to the manner in which numbers

  • are grouped, or associated, and is true for addition and multiplication only.*Notice the

  • order in which the variables are expressed remain constant.Next, the commutative property states that for all

  • real numbers a & b: a + b = b + a and ab= ba.The commutative property refers to the

  • manner in which numbers are ordered.*The order in which you add or multiply numbers does

  • not affect the result. Finally, we have the distributive property. The distributive property

  • states; For all real numbers a, b, & c: a(b + c) = ab + ac.When a number is being multiplied

  • by a quantity, every term in the quantity must be multiplied by the number.*Since the

  • distributive property includes multiplication and addition. The order in which the numbers

  • are expressed does not affect the outcome. (b + c) = ac + ab. To earn credit for completing

  • this lesson, you need to identify the property illustrated in each of the examples below

  • and respond to the polls on the Haiku website. Use the poll results and the discussion board

  • to connect with your classmates and identify the correct answers.
