Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, 貴格先生原本跪在那種甘藍菜苗,卻跳起來追彼得 waving a rake and calling out, 'Stop thief!' 揮舞著耙子大喊:別跑,小偷! Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, 彼得嚇壞了,在花園裡四處亂竄, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate. 他忘記回柵門的路了 He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes. 他在甘藍堆裡掉了一隻鞋,又掉了一隻在馬鈴薯那 After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, 鞋子丟光後,用四隻腳跑起來更快了, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, 所以我想他原本應該能順利脫逃的,但不幸地,他撞上了黑醋栗的網子 and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket. Mr. McGregor was after him in no time. 「哈啾!」彼得打了個噴嚏,貴格先生馬上就出現在他身後 And tried to put his foot upon Peter, who jumped out of a window, upsetting three plants. 他試著踩住彼得,但他跳出窗外,還弄翻3盆植物 The window was too small for Mr. McGregor, and he was tired of running after Peter. 窗口對桂格先生來說太小了,他也追得累了 He went back to his work. 便回去做他的工作 Peter sat down to rest; he was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he had not 彼得坐下來休息,他氣喘吁吁,因驚嚇而發抖 the least idea which way to go. Also he was very damp with sitting in that can. 他還是不知該往哪走,而且躲在盆裡讓他濕透了 After a time he began to wander about, going lippity—lippity—not very fast, and looking 過了一會兒,他開始徘徊,啪搭-啪搭-緩緩移動 all round. 他環顧著四周 He found a door in a wall; but it was locked, and there was no room 發現牆上有個門,但鎖住了,底下空間不大 for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath. 小胖兔無法從下面擠過 An old mouse was running in and out over the stone doorstep, carrying peas and beans to 一隻年邁的老鼠在石階跑進跑出,帶著豌豆、豆子 her family in the wood. Peter asked her the way to the gate, but she had such a large 給住在木頭裡的家人,彼得問他往大門的路 pea in her mouth that she could not answer. She only shook her head at him. A white cat was staring 他到了貴格先生裝水的池塘邊,有隻白貓盯著金魚 at some gold-fish, she sat very, very still, but now and then the tip of her tail twitched 一動也不動地坐著,但牠的尾巴末端抖動 as if it were alive. Peter thought it best to go away without speaking to her; he had 就像自己有生命一般,彼得心想最好趕緊安靜離開 heard about cats from his cousin, little Benjamin Bunny. 他聽過貓的事情,表哥班傑明說的 He went back towards the tool-shed, but suddenly, quite close to him, he heard the noise of 他走回工具堆,突然間,不遠處傳來 a hoe—scr-r-ritch, scratch, scratch, scritch. Peter scuttered underneath the bushes. But 鋤頭的聲音:唰、唰、唰... 彼得在樹叢裡快速奔走 presently, as nothing happened, he came out, and climbed upon a wheelbarrow and peeped 一切還算順利,他探出身來,爬上手推車悄悄張望 over. The first thing he saw was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions. His back was turned towards 他看到貴格先生正在鋤洋蔥,背對著 Peter, and beyond him was the gate! 彼得,而大門正在他身後! Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow; and started running as fast as he could go, 彼得非常輕巧地下了推車,開始用盡全速奔跑 along a straight walk behind some black-currant bushes. 在黑醋栗樹叢後沿路直衝 Mr. McGregor caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did not care. 貴格先生看到他在角落了,但彼得毫不理會 He slipped underneath the gate, and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden. 從大門下溜走,最後終於安全地離開菜園 Mr. McGregor hung up the little jacket and the shoes for a scare-crow to frighten the 貴格先生把小外套和鞋子掛了起來,當作稻草人 Peter never stopped running or looked behind him till he got home to the big fir-tree. 彼得頭也不回地持續奔跑,一路直到大杉樹裡的家 He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole and shut his eyes. 他累壞了,攤倒在兔子洞柔軟的沙地上,闔上雙眼 His mother was busy cooking; she wondered what he had done with his clothes. 媽媽邊忙著作菜邊納悶他的外套又怎麼了 It was the second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight! 彼得兩星期內已經弄丟第二件外套和鞋子了! I am sorry to say that Peter was not very well during the evening. 那天晚上,彼得狀況不太好 His mother put him to bed, and made some camomile tea; and she gave a dose of it to Peter! 媽媽送他上床睡覺,還煮了甘菊茶給彼得喝了一些 'One teaspoonful to be taken at bed-time.' 「睡前喝一茶匙。」 But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper. 而今晚,小福、小莫和棉棉的晚餐有麵包、牛奶和黑莓子 THE END 完結
