Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were—

從前從前，有4隻小白兔，名字是－

Flopsy, Mopsy,

小福、小莫

Cotton-tail, and Peter.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

他們和媽媽一起住在大杉樹根下的沙坑裡

'Now my dears,' said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, 'you may go into the fields or down the lane,

「寶貝們，」某天早晨兔媽說：「你們能到田野、小徑上去玩，

but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden: your Father had an accident there;

但就是不能進入貴格先生的菜園，爸爸就是在那出意外的，

and was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.'

'Now run along, and don't get into mischief. I am going out.'

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker's.

兔媽媽手提籃子拿著傘，穿過森林到麵包店

She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.

買了條黑麵包和 5 個葡萄乾小麵包

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies,

小福、小莫和棉棉是乖巧的小兔子，

went down the lane together to gather blackberries.

他們在小徑上採集黑莓果

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden,

and squeezed under the gate!

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter,

貴格先生原本跪在那種甘藍菜苗，卻跳起來追彼得

waving a rake and calling out, 'Stop thief!'

揮舞著耙子大喊：別跑，小偷！

Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden,

彼得嚇壞了，在花園裡四處亂竄，

for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

他忘記回柵門的路了

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.

他在甘藍堆裡掉了一隻鞋，又掉了一隻在馬鈴薯那

After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster,

鞋子丟光後，用四隻腳跑起來更快了，

so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net,

所以我想他原本應該能順利脫逃的，但不幸地，他撞上了黑醋栗的網子

and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket with brass buttons, quite new.

網子勾住了外套的大釦子，這是件有黃銅釦的藍外套，還很新呢

Peter gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears; but his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows,

彼得為迷路而感到灰心喪志，淚水直落；但他的啜泣聲傳到好心的麻雀耳裡，

who flew to him in great excitement, and implored him to exert himself.

牠們激動地飛近，鼓勵他再盡點力

Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop upon the top of Peter;

but Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him.

And rushed into the tool-shed, and jumped into a can.

他衝到工具堆裡，跳進盆罐

It would have been a beautiful thing to hide in, if it had not had so much water in it.

這本該是個完美的藏身之地，只是裡頭的水有點多

Mr. McGregor was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the tool-shed, perhaps hidden underneath a flower-pot.

貴格先生很確定彼得就在工具堆裡某處，也許藏在花盆下

He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each.

他開始仔細翻找，逐一查看

Presently Peter sneezed—'Kertyschoo!' Mr. McGregor was after him in no time.

「哈啾！」彼得打了個噴嚏，貴格先生馬上就出現在他身後

And tried to put his foot upon Peter, who jumped out of a window, upsetting three plants.

他試著踩住彼得，但他跳出窗外，還弄翻3盆植物

The window was too small for Mr. McGregor, and he was tired of running after Peter.

窗口對桂格先生來說太小了，他也追得累了

He went back to his work.

便回去做他的工作

Peter sat down to rest; he was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he had not

彼得坐下來休息，他氣喘吁吁，因驚嚇而發抖

the least idea which way to go. Also he was very damp with sitting in that can.

他還是不知該往哪走，而且躲在盆裡讓他濕透了

After a time he began to wander about, going lippity—lippity—not very fast, and looking

過了一會兒，他開始徘徊，啪搭－啪搭－緩緩移動

all round.

他環顧著四周

He found a door in a wall; but it was locked, and there was no room

發現牆上有個門，但鎖住了，底下空間不大

for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.

An old mouse was running in and out over the stone doorstep, carrying peas and beans to

her family in the wood. Peter asked her the way to the gate, but she had such a large

pea in her mouth that she could not answer. She only shook her head at him. Peter began

to cry.

Then he tried to find his way straight across the garden, but he became more and more puzzled.

後來他試著直走橫跨花園，卻越走越糊塗

Presently, he came to a pond where Mr. McGregor filled his water-cans. A white cat was staring

他到了貴格先生裝水的池塘邊，有隻白貓盯著金魚

at some gold-fish, she sat very, very still, but now and then the tip of her tail twitched

一動也不動地坐著，但牠的尾巴末端抖動

as if it were alive. Peter thought it best to go away without speaking to her; he had

heard about cats from his cousin, little Benjamin Bunny.

He went back towards the tool-shed, but suddenly, quite close to him, he heard the noise of

a hoe—scr-r-ritch, scratch, scratch, scritch. Peter scuttered underneath the bushes. But

鋤頭的聲音：唰、唰、唰... 彼得在樹叢裡快速奔走

presently, as nothing happened, he came out, and climbed upon a wheelbarrow and peeped

一切還算順利，他探出身來，爬上手推車悄悄張望

over. The first thing he saw was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions. His back was turned towards

Peter, and beyond him was the gate!

彼得，而大門正在他身後！

Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow; and started running as fast as he could go,

彼得非常輕巧地下了推車，開始用盡全速奔跑

along a straight walk behind some black-currant bushes.

在黑醋栗樹叢後沿路直衝

Mr. McGregor caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did not care.

貴格先生看到他在角落了，但彼得毫不理會

He slipped underneath the gate, and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden.

從大門下溜走，最後終於安全地離開菜園

Mr. McGregor hung up the little jacket and the shoes for a scare-crow to frighten the

貴格先生把小外套和鞋子掛了起來，當作稻草人

Peter never stopped running or looked behind him till he got home to the big fir-tree.

彼得頭也不回地持續奔跑，一路直到大杉樹裡的家

He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole and shut his eyes.

他累壞了，攤倒在兔子洞柔軟的沙地上，闔上雙眼

His mother was busy cooking; she wondered what he had done with his clothes.

媽媽邊忙著作菜邊納悶他的外套又怎麼了

It was the second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight!

彼得兩星期內已經弄丟第二件外套和鞋子了！

I am sorry to say that Peter was not very well during the evening.

那天晚上，彼得狀況不太好

His mother put him to bed, and made some camomile tea; and she gave a dose of it to Peter!

媽媽送他上床睡覺，還煮了甘菊茶給彼得喝了一些

'One teaspoonful to be taken at bed-time.'

「睡前喝一茶匙。」

But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.

而今晚，小福、小莫和棉棉的晚餐有麵包、牛奶和黑莓子
