Asian and I am so honored that my book has been selected as the Life of the Mind book

for the University of Tennessee this year. My book is about race and identity and culture

and what it means to be an American. and I hope that as you read it you will ask

these questions of what it means to be an American and how your own identity has been

shaped. I hope you will ask them of yourself. I hope

you will ask them of your friends and classmates and people all around you.

I am so looking forward to joining you on campus and coming to speak to you and I can

wait to hear from you and to hear about all the ways in which this book has sparked your

own reflections about the path that you want to take.

as a student, as a member of the UT community, and as an American.
