Today we are going to be looking at the words that you put stress on, 今天我們要將焦點放在字詞的重音 and how they give a different meaning to the sentence. So we're 以及重音字詞在整個句子代表的意義,來 going to be looking at this one... Well, two sentences, here, and how with different questions, I might put a different stress, more emphasis, more volume, perhaps, on these particular words. And then over here, I'm going to be looking at subtext. Yes, I'm saying words 另外一個部分,我們要來討論潛在涵義,沒錯,字詞的潛在涵義 to you, but what am I saying underneath? What am I really saying to you? Okay? So I'm looking 所謂話中有話,我會 at how, by putting emphasis on one word, it can change the entire meaning of the sentence. Something really quite useful to hang onto, I hope. So, unfortunately, back home I have some butter that has gone a little bit mad. Now, today, my aunt came to have tea. In Britain, we have a cup of tea, and we have some toast, and 今天姑姑要來我家泡茶,在英國,我們習慣喝茶配一些吐司 maybe some scones. My aunt is a little hard of hearing-okay?-so we need to repeat things, 或烤餅,我姑姑聽力不太好,所以一句話我常常要講很多次 and I need to say things quite loudly to her. So, my aunt said: 並嘶吼著嗓門,我姑姑問說 "Benjamin, which butter's off?" "Off" meaning bad, finished. And so, when she said: "Which butter?" I need to tell 當她說「哪罐奶油?」,我要告訴她 her that it's this butter, not that butter. "This butter's off", dear aunt. Okay? This butter. Okay? So when she's asking which one it is, I emphasize: "This". Now, she was... My aunt, she was walking around the kitchen and she'd heard me saying something 現在姑姑來到廚房,聽到我說有東西壞了 about being off, so she said: "Benjamin, what's off?" As in: What is off, what has gone bad? And I said: "It's the butter's gone off. The butter's off." So when she's asking: What? Well, what is about a thing, she's asking which thing. It's the butter which is bad, 是奶油壞掉了 as well as the pen. Now, she didn't quite hear me, so she said: "What's the matter with the butter?" And I said: 現在她還是聽不清我在說啥,她又問「奶油出什麼問題?」,我回答 "Well, the butter's off. It's gone bad. It's off." Okay? So I emphasize "off", this is what the matter is, it's off. My dear aunt, she stayed a little bit longer in my flat 親愛的姑姑,她今天在我家待蠻久一段時間 today, and she heard me talking about my plans for the evening a bit later. And she said: 她聽到我今天下午的計畫,她問 "Who's having dinner?" So I've got this sentence here: "We're having dinner late tonight." So I said: "We're having dinner late tonight.", "We're", me and my wife are having dinner. Okay? We are, we're, so I put the emphasis on here to make it clear to her so she understands 「我們」,我把重音加在我們好讓姑姑了解 that it's me and... Me and bond girl. 是我和我老婆 -"What are you doing later?" -"We're having... We're having dinner." 吃"晚餐"」 -"What are you doing?" -"We're having dinner." -"What? -"Dinner." 「你等等要做什麼?」「我們要吃"晚餐"」「-什麼? -吃"晚餐"」 -"What is it you're doing?" -"Dinner. We're having dinner." Okay? So I make it clear. This is 「你要做什麼事情?」「"晚餐"。我們要吃"晚餐"。」我很清楚表達要做什麼 if I'm trying to make something really clear to someone, I would emphasize these words like this. 如果我要對某人清楚地解釋一件事,我會強調一些字詞 It's not always this obvious. You can do it just a little bit. Let's try it with a little bit. 做起來不是一件易事,需要常常練習,再來看一個句子 So she says, my aunt, she says: -"When are we having dinner?" 我姑姑問「我們什麼時候吃晚餐?」 -"We're having dinner late tonight, we're having late." Late. Or I might even say: 「我們"晚點"要去吃晚餐,"晚點"吃」,晚點,或是我會說 "Tonight. We're having dinner late tonight", as in: 「"今晚",我們要去吃晚餐」,言下之意是 "Don't forget it's today. Don't go anywhere, aunty, it's tonight." Okay? 「別忘了是"今天","今晚"別亂跑哦姑姑」 So you can just change the meaning, change the emphasis. Okay? Emphasis 你可以改變重音,當然也就改變了整句話的意思 by putting stress on a different word. 加重音在不同字詞上 Now, this is how to be mean, how to be a little bit nasty. Okay. So, I've got this sentence, 現在要教的,會有點不友善或有點惡劣,接下來的句子 and I'm going to show you two different meanings that I can get from it. So we've got: 我要教你如何了解一句話所涵蓋的兩個意思,看個例子 "She drives very carefully." Okay? I haven't put any particular emphasis on any of the words. 「她開車很小心」,我沒有加重音在任何字詞 "She drives very carefully." But if I say: "SHE drives very carefully." Okay? If I say: 「她開車很小心」,換個說法,「"她"開車很小心」,再重複一次 "SHE drives very carefully." I say that to my wife and I'm talking about my aunt driving 「"她"開車很小心」,我對著我太太說,姑姑開車很小心 carefully, I'm saying: "She drives very carefully." I'm kind of saying: 我說「"她"開車很小心」,我的意思是 "You don't drive very carefully." It's she, it's her who drives carefully. 「"妳"開車很不小心」,是"她"開車很小心 Okay? So: "You don't drive carefully." 所以「妳開車很不小心」 But if I'm talking about my dear aunt, and I says... And I say: "She drives very CAREFULLY." 如果我提到親愛的姑姑,我說「她開車很"小心"」 Yeah? I might be being a little bit sarcastic. 其中可能含有諷刺意味 You know? She's driving so carefully that 你知道嗎? 她開車很小心 she won't go faster than 10 miles an hour. She drives so carefully I feel like killing 她的時速一小時10英里,她開車很小心,我都想跳車了 myself. Okay: "She drives too slowly." Okay? If I put the emphasis on "carefully". Okay? 意思是「她開太慢了」,強調「小心」帶有諷刺的意味 Now, are we ready for this next bit? Are we ready, guys? Let's go. I've got a phrase here: 準備好要學接下來這句話嗎? 我們準備好了嗎? 繼續吧,這邊有個句子 "You shouldn't have painted it." Okay? It's a... It's a small criticism. 「你原本就不該粉刷它」,這...有責怪意味 "You shouldn't have painted it." But if I'm saying: "YOU shouldn't have painted it." 「你原本就不該粉刷它」,換個說法,「"你"原本就不該粉刷它」 I'm saying that your painting is not good, so it should have been handsome handyman who painted it. Okay? 意思是,你粉刷技術很爛,應該要由帥氣油漆工來粉刷 So you are not the person for this job; should have been him. Okay? So I'm basically saying: 你壓根不適合這個工作,應該由他來做,潛在涵義就是 "You're not so good at painting. You're bad at painting." But if I say: 「你不擅長粉刷、你粉刷技術爛透了」,但如果我說 "You shouldn't have PAINTED it." I'm saying: "How stupid are you? You painted the wall. You should 「你原本就不該"粉刷"它」,意思是「你居然蠢到去粉刷牆壁 have put wallpaper up. Painting is not a good decision in this case." Yeah? If I'm emphasizing 貼上壁紙不就得了,在這樣的情況,粉刷不是個好辦法」,如果我強調 the action to paint, I'm saying: "Painting, this is really a bad idea." "粉刷"這兩字,潛在涵義為「粉刷這個主意爛透了」 Guys, thank you so much for watching this evening, or this morning, or this afternoon, 大夥,謝謝你在晚上、早上或下午的收看 or in the middle of the night. Go to bed!
