Welcome to engVid. 大家好,歡迎來 《engVid》 Is it a lot harder for you to speak English around native speakers than it is to speak English with other learners 你會覺得在外國人面前說英文,比在其他英文學習者 or people from other countries who are speaking English as a second language? So, do you forget your words, do you lose all your confidence when you're speaking to someone from England, for example? If your answer is yes, then I have some advice for you 若你有以上問題的話,我可以給你一些建議 so that you can speak with more confidence around native speakers. I think the most important point, where I want to start, 我認為最重要的一點,也是我想先開始說的 is that: Don't look at the native speaker as if they're up here and better than you in any way, 就是:不要覺得外國人好像高高在上,隨便都比你厲害 because sadly, that is why a lot of people get awkward and stop talking around native speakers 令人難過地,這就是為什麼很多人在外國人面前說英文時會覺得尷尬,然後就不說話了 because they think: "The native speaker's English is just so good. I'm going to sound like an idiot next to them." And that's why they close down and go quiet. So, the next time you're around a native speaker, 所以,下一次,外國人在你身邊時 speak to the native speaker on a level with them. It means: "You're here, I'm here, I'm not looking up at you, you're not looking down at me", 就好像是:「你在這,我也在這,我沒有高舉你,你也沒有看不起我」 and that is a really important step to bringing that confidence to you when you're speaking around the native speaker. The next important point is: Some people are confident speaking English around other learners or other non-native speakers 另一個重點是:有些人,在其他英文學習者,或不是說英文的外國人面前,能很有自信地說英文 because they think: 因為他們覺得: "When I'm speaking to this person, they don't know if I'm making mistakes, so I can just say this, say that, say this, and 「我跟這個人說話的時候,他們又不會知道我說錯了,所以我就這樣說、那樣說、隨便說 it doesn't matter if... In fact, it doesn't matter if I make mistakes because the other person doesn't know; therefore, I feel relaxed." But the problem when you speak to a native speaker, then, is that: 但問題是,當你跟外國人講話時,情況會像是: "Oh no, they are going to know all the mistakes that I'm making. 「噢不,他們一定會知道我所有犯錯的地方 They're going to notice that I'm saying it wrong. It's... I... I don't want to speak 他們一定會注意到我說錯了。我不想要說話了 because they're going to think that my English is so bad." Well, it is... It is true that 好吧,事實上 a native speaker, if they're analyzing your language and watching your language and if 如果外國人他們正在分析你的語言、觀察你的語言 they care about your language, they can notice: You made a mistake there, you made a mistake there, you made a mistake there. (X3) But the reality of communication is that most people are not thinking about that kind of stuff when they talk to you; 但是,真正的溝通是這樣的,當他們跟你說話時,大部分的人才不會去想那些事情 they are communicating in the moment, they're thinking about themselves, what they're going to say. They're not watching you and your language closely. The native speaker just doesn't care about your language that much. The native speaker doesn't care about your mistakes as much as you think about your mistakes and worry about your mistakes. Speaking as a native speaker, now, as a native speaker teacher, when I'm talking to someone, I have to switch on and concentrate if I want to listen for people's mistakes. It takes effort and it takes energy. And if I'm concentrating on listening to the words to find mistakes, 若我專注於找出那些說錯的字詞 it means that I'm not really in the middle of a conversation with that person. Instead, I'm just listening to: Are they making mistakes? So in my normal communication, 所以在我平常的對話中 my normal social communication with people, of course I'm not listening closely for mistakes, because I'm having a conversation. It's so far away from my mind and it's not important to me at all. So I hope, as an example, that gives you some confidence to think that: 舉個例子,我希望你藉由這樣想來給你點信心: "Oh yeah, maybe native speakers don't care about my mistakes that much." Which brings me to the next point, which is: Even if you are making mistakes, is it really that important? So instead of having this way of looking at yourself when you make a mistake: 犯錯時,除了像這樣看待自己: "Oh, it's terrible, it's really bad. I have to... I have to learn more. I have to avoid it." Try instead to develop and grow in yourself the ability to make those mistakes with what I would call vulnerability. 你反而應該去嘗試,提升受挫力,從你犯錯的能力中求進步、成長 "Vulnerability" means allowing yourself to show a weak side, 「受挫力」意思就是允許自己展現弱的一面 I think is a good description of vulnerability. You know, it would be great if you could speak to that person 若你跟別人說英文時 in the same way as you can speak in your native language, say exactly what you want without any mistakes, all perfect. It would be great. But the reality is you're still learning a language, 但現實是,你還在學習一個語言 and nobody in the history of the world learnt a language without making mistakes along the way. So allow yourself this vulnerability, and allow yourself to exercise that vulnerability 所以讓自己有這樣的受挫力,並且讓自己練習這種受挫力 so that you get good at being vulnerable when you're speaking a language, 這樣一來,當你在說話時,就會對受挫很在行 rather than: "Oh, no, I don't want to make a mistake, I don't want to make a mistake, I don't want to make a mistake." 而不會像:「噢不,我不想要犯錯!(X3)」 So rather than stop, you know, trying to make these mistakes so much, 所以,不要阻止自己犯錯 be seeing it as a good thing to try speaking, try speaking as much as possible to whatever level you can speak, 要把犯錯當作是練習口說時的一件好事,在你的能力範圍內,盡可能地多說話 and if mistakes happen, okay. 如果犯錯了,沒關係的 At least I tried. The next point is a really, really simple one. If you're around a native speaker and you don't understand or they're speaking too fast, 當你遇到外國人時,你聽不懂他們說的話,或者他們說話太快時 it's really okay to ask them to repeat themselves, 請他們再說一次,真的沒有關係 to say it more slowly, or to say: "I don't understand", or to say: "Can you say it in a different way?" 請他們講慢一點,或者跟他們說:「我聽不懂」,也可以跟他們說:「你能換個說法嗎?」 or to say: "I'm sorry, I don't know that word. Can you explain it?" Again, speaking as a native speaker, sometimes you meet someone 身為外國人,有時候我遇到某些人 and you can, based on the first impression that you get of the person, you think: 根據那個人給我的第一印象,讓我覺得 "Oh, their English is really great", because their accent is good or for whatever reason, you just presume 「唉唷,他的英文很不錯喔」,因為他的口音好讚,或者不知怎地就推測 that their English is really great. And when a native speaker gets that impression of you, then 他的英文應該很棒。 當外國人對你有這種印象時 maybe they'll speak really fast and they'll be using hard words 可能他們講話就會很快,而且他們就會開始用比較難的詞彙 because it seems like your English is great and you understand them. And when that happens, a lot of the time the 遇到這情況時,絕大多數 person learning English is like: "Ah, I don't understand anything, I don't understand anything", 在學英文的人會說:「阿唷,我什麼都聽不懂!(X2)」 because you're now getting native speaker normal talk. that's really, really hard. So in these situations, it's a great thing to... To say: "Slow down" or "Say that again", and Nothing wrong with doing that. So there you are. These are my tips for you, if you're shy to speak around native speakers. When you get... When you come across a native speaker next time, take the opportunity, 下次你再遇到外國人的時候,好好利用那個機會 see yourself on a level, allow yourself to make mistakes with that vulnerability, 把自己心態調整到一定水平,帶著受挫力,允許自己犯錯 and from there comes increased confidence when you speak English to native speakers. Thank you so much for watching, and for today's video, you can do the quiz, 非常感謝你的收看,今天的影片有小測驗你們可以去做做看 and it would also be really great if you leave a comment with any other tips that you have for increased confidence 非常歡迎你在留言處分享任何其他 when you're speaking English to native speakers. Thank you for watching, and see you.
