In the video "who am I"
I showed a simple, logical method
that can enable us to see
that the "I" is not the physical body.
If you haven't yet seen the video "who am I?"
and the video "what is consciousness?"
I recommend that you see them first.
To determine whether the "I" is the body,
we performed a very simple mental experiment.
We imagined
that we had lost a part of the body,
such as the palm,
and we asked ourselves
if we were still ourselves,
or whether we were someone else.
And indeed,
the obvious answer
is that even without my palm I remain myself.
I may feel different about myself
and may be less capable of doing certain things,
but I will still remain who I am.
In other words,
the palm is mine, but it is not me!
It is also clear that the thought experiment
is eventually an assisting tool for us.
The only ones who can give a definite answer
to the question in the experiment
are those who have actually lost
lost their palm or any other part of their body
and found out
that they are still themselves.
However,
because I really do not recommend
removing parts of our body
in order to answer that question,
we would settle doing it mentally.
The goal of the experiment
is to try to eliminate
as many parts of our body as possible
and examine
whether we are still us
or whether we are someone else...
In this way we could determine
if we are the body.
I apologize for using unpleasant examples,
such as the loss of body parts,
but I believe it is worth it
if that is what will enable you to gain,
the significant insight
that "I am not the physical body".
You can go very far
with this mental experiment,
because nowadays,
thanks to modern medicine and science,
people can lose almost any organ of the body,
and still remain alive
to report that they are still themselves.
For example,
there are countless people who underwent
a heart transplant.
There is even a handful of people
living without a heart at all,
surviving thanks to an implanted blood pump,
and they testify
that they remain themselves.
"No, I don't have a heart..."
"I feel exactly the same"
"So the heart isn't the seat of the emotion"
"is that what you tell us?"
"Yes, the seat of the emotions is in the brain"
"it is scientifically proven"
However,
at some point
in the mental experiment
we encounter a difficulty
when we try to imagine ourselves
without the brain.
One of the reasons for this
is that the removal of a person’s brain
results in instantaneous death,
which makes it impossible for him to testify
whether he is still himself.
Please note,
that this doesn't necessarily mean
the "I" is the brain.
There are other possibilities.
One possibility
is that the "I" is a product of the brain
or that it is carried within it,
just as there is a difference
between a hardware and a software.
When the hardware is destroyed,
the software is destroyed as well,
but they are not the same.
Another possibility is that the "I"
is separate from the brain,
and that the brain is just a device
through which the "I" manifests itself.
This is similar to a radio receiver
playing music.
The music is not inside the radio,
but in the electromagnetic signal in space.
The radio only allows music to be expressed
in the form of sound waves.
If the radio is destroyed,
the music won't be destroyed,
and it could continue to be expressed
as sound wave
through another radio receiver.
In the video "who am I"
we concluded that the "I" is not the psyche,
but consciousness.
By the way, we reached this conclusion
independently from the question
whether the "I" is the body or brain
We know that many parts of the brain
are responsible for physical and mental activities
that are not related to consciousness itself,
such as:
controlling muscles,
digestion,
heart-beat,
sensory processing,
thinking, feeling, etc.
I do not know what part of the brain
is responsible for the existence
or the manifestation of consciousness
— if at all —
but, if we removed
all the parts of the brain
that are unnecessary
for the existence of consciousness,
perhaps we would be left
with a small portion of the brain,
a small group of cells,
responsible for the existence of consciousness,
and then
we could proudly announce:
"That is who I am..."
To me it seems a little bit weird,
but, hey, who knows?
We may never have a definite answer.
We now know that we are consciousness,
but does this mean that we are only a
product of some neural structures,
or do we have an existence
that is separated from them,
and these structures are only the antenna
that allows us to connect to the body...
At the present moment,
I do not have the answer -
so, I'm leaving you and your personal discernment
to figure out what you believe is the truth.
