and the fundamentalist zealotry are something new.

They've been with us for as long as we've been human.

But we live in an age based on science and technology

with formidable technological powers.

Science and technology are propelling us forward at accelerating rates.

That's right and if we don't understand it

if it's something that - 'Oh, I'm not good that. I don't know anything about it.'

that are going to determine what kind of future our children live in?

It is two kinds of things. One is what I just talked about

that we've arranged the society based on science and technology

in which nobody understands anything about science and technology.

And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power

sooner or later is gonna blow up in our faces.

And the second reason that I'm worried about this is that

science is more than a body of knowledge.

It's a way of thinking.

A way of skeptically interrogating the universe

with a fine understanding of the human fallibility.

If we are not able to ask skeptical questions to interrogate those who tell us

that something is true. To be skeptical of those in authority

是對的人提出質疑、懷疑擁權者的話

then we are up for grabs for the next charlatan

那我們都可以當吹牛的人

political or religious, who comes ambling along.

It is a thing that Jefferson laid great stress on.

Jefferson 活在壓力下這真的滿了不起的

It wasn't enough he said to enshrine some rights in a constitution or bill of rights.

他說：遵守憲法體制下的法律或是右派的議案都是不夠的

The people had to be educated

人們必須要受教育

and they to practice their skepticism and education.

還有他們要練習懷疑論還有教育學

Otherwise we don't run the government.

否則我們無法經營一個政府

The government runs us.

而是政府統治著我們

You see, people read stock market quotations and financial pages.

你看，人們研讀股票市場的問題還有分析金融紀錄

Look how complex that is.

去看這些是多複雜

People are able to look at sports statistics.

人們可以看著運動統計數值

Look how many people can do that.

看有多少人可以做到這樣

Understanding science is not more difficult than that.

了解科學不會比那些還困難

It doesn't involve greater intellectual activities.

這跟智力活躍沒有關係

But the thing about science is first of all

但是關於科學這件事絕對是擺第一的

it's after what the universe really is and not what makes us feel better.

這件事在「宇宙到底是什麼」之前，而非讓我們自我感覺良好

And lot of the competing doctrines

還有很多不能同時被接受的觀點

are after what feels good.

是在我們感覺不錯下產生的

Science does not prove religion. Because religion is faith-based.

科學沒辦法證明宗教。因為宗教是信仰的根本

What is faith?

什麼是信仰

It is believe in the absence of evidence.

證據的缺少

Now, I don't propose to tell anybody what to believe, but for me

believing when there is no compelling evidence

「當沒有強烈證據顯示的時候，它就是宗教了」

is a mistake.

The idea is to hold believe untill there is compelling evidence.

And if the universe does not comply with our predispositions

Okay, now we have the wrenching obligation to accomodate to the way the universe is.

So who is more humble?

那誰才是更謙虛的呢？

The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us?

用開闊的心看著宇宙，並且接受宇宙教會我們的科學家？

Or somebody who says everything in this book must be considered the literal truth

或是這本書裡所有的事情都要逐字的思考的哲學家？

and never mind all the fallibility of the human beings involved in the writing of this book???

千萬不要介意人類易犯錯的事寫進書裡這回事？

I lost both my parents about 12 and 15 years ago

我在12年前還有15年前陸續失去我的雙親

I had a great relationship with them

I really miss them.

I would love to believe they are spirits who are around somewhere.

我想要相信他們的靈魂就在附近

And I'd give almost anything to spend five minutes a year with them.

- Do you hear their voices ever? -

Sometimes, about six or eight times since their death, I've heard.

- You couldn't prove. You didn't know it was there. But the arrogance...

你沒辦法證明。你不知道它是不是真的存在，但是傲慢..

Wait, we don't know if He is there

等等。我們不知道是否他在那..

We don't know if He is not there.

我們不知道是否他在那

Let's look

我們來看看吧

- and if you take that, why can't you say there is alot we don't know?

如果你的觀點是這樣，那為什麼你說有很多是我們不知道的呢？

I say that.

我的確是這樣說過

- There is a lot of power there that we don't know.

那邊有很多力量是我們不知道的

That's what I believe. But that does not mean that every fraudulent has to be accepted.

那是我相信的。但是這不代表每一個不真實的事就必須被接受。

We demand the most rigorous standards of evidence

我們要求最嚴標準的證據

especially on what is important to us.

特別是對我們很重要的那些事

So if some guy comes up to me

所以如果有人來找我

a channeler or a medium: 'I can put you in touch with your parents'

一種通道的媒介：我可以讓你跟你的父母聯絡上

Well because I want so terribly to believe that

I know I have to reach in for added reserves of skepticism

because I'm likely to be fooled

and much more minor, to have my money taken.

I'd love to believe the opposite but I don't have any evidence.
