In today's lesson, 大家好,我是Niharika。在今天的課程中 we are gonna look at phrases to talk about expensive things. Yesterday I went shopping and I loved 我們要來教形容東西昂貴的句子。昨天我去逛街的時候 this beautiful dress, but the moment I looked at the price tag I realized it's super expensive. 看到一件很漂亮的洋裝,但當我看到標簽上的價格時才意識到它有多昂貴 So that brings me here to do this lesson for you. In English we all talk about money, right? 於是這讓我想在今天教大家這個課程。我們在講英文的時候總離不開金錢對吧? We talk about fancy cars, expensive vacations, diamonds..all these things are so expensive. 我們談論跑車、豪華旅遊、鑽石...等等非常奢華的東西 In English we have many phrases you can use when you talk about expensive stuff. 在英文裡,有很多句子可以用來形容昂貴的物品 So let's get started. 就讓我們開始吧 The very first one that I have for you is that's a bit steep. Now when do you use this expression? 首先要教你們的是「這個價位有點高」。什麼時候使用這個句子呢? When something is not very expensive but it's just little more expensive. 當某個東西並不是非常貴而是有一點貴的時候 So you go to a store and you love these pair of shoes, but you think that these pair of shoes are 譬如說,你去一家店裡看到一雙心愛的鞋,但你覺得那雙鞋有一點貴 little expensive. So rather than saying "Ahh they are a little expensive" use this expression 除了說「這雙鞋好貴」之外,可以用這個句子 these are a bit steep or that's a big steep. You can use this expression when something 「這雙鞋的價位有點高」,當你覺得某些東西價位有點高的時候 is little high priced. Alright! 可以用這個句子 The second phrase that I have for you is that's a bit pricey. This expression is very similar 第二個要教你們的句子是「這個東西小貴」。這個句子和前一個很相似 to the one above. So rather than using the word steep, you can also use the word pricey. 所以除了使用價位高一詞之外,還可以使用小貴這個詞 And again it is used for the stuff which is not very expensive but a little high priced. 再次提醒,它是用來形容某物有點貴,而非特別昂貴 All right, so rather than saying it's a little expensive, it's not very expensive, use the 所以,除了說這個東西好貴、這東西沒有很貴之外 expression. It's a bit steep or it's a bit pricey. 學會用「這個價位有點高」或「這個東西小貴」 Let's have a look at the third expression here. To cost an arm and leg. Now when do you use 我們來看看第三個句子,「貴得要命」。什麼時候使用這個句子呢? this? When something is so expensive. When you have to pay too much to buy something. 當某物非常非常貴,而你需要付出許多才能買下某物之時 So it is a figurative phrase. Like for example - My Mercedes car has cost me an arm and leg. 這是一種譬喻句。舉例來說:我的賓士貴得要命 So imagine you have to buy something that you got to sell the most important parts of 想像一下當你必需賣掉自己的手臂和腳才能買下某物的時候 your body, that's arms and legs. Will you do that? So when something is super expensive, 你會願意這麼做嗎?所以當某物超級貴的時候 rather than saying or using the word expensive use this expression - this has cost me an 除了說這個好貴,可以說這個東西「貴得要命」 arm and leg. Like this new diamond ring has cost me an arm and leg, it means I have paid 譬如說,這個新鑽戒貴的要命 too much of money for this. 意思是這顆鑽戒花了我好多錢 Now let's have a look at another expression here - To pay through the nose. Now here it 現在我們來看另一個句子,「花上大把鈔票」 doesn't really mean that you remove cash out of your nose - no you don't do that, but this 在這裡並不是真的指透過鼻子付錢,不,沒人會這麼做 expression is used when you pay too much of money for something. In fact this expression 但這個句子是在形容當你為了某物付出太多金錢的時候,事實上這個句子來自愛爾蘭 comes from the Irish .Well, apparently the people in Ireland, if they didn't pay tax 很明顯地,愛爾蘭人如果沒有繳交稅收 - the people or the tax offenders would have their nose slit, that's weird right! So I 收稅者會將他們的鼻子撕裂,很詭異對吧! am guessing that this expression comes from the Irish - so pay through the nose actually 所以我猜這句子是來自愛爾蘭。「花上大把鈔票」 means to pay a lot of money. Like these days - cars, Uff to buy cars you literally have 其實是指要花一堆錢。像現在,若想要買車 to pay through the nose. Because cars are so expensive these days,Or for example the 真的要花上大把鈔票,因為當今車子真的很貴。再舉房子來說 house. To buy a house or to buy a property in my city we literally have to pay through 想要在我居住的城市買房或不動產真的要花上大把鈔票 the nose , it means we have to put in a lot of money. 意思是我們必須付很多的錢 Let's have a look at the next one here - Exorbitant - well, that's how you pronounce it Exorbitant 我們來看看下一個字是「過分昂貴」,發音如下 and this word is used for something which is unreasonably priced. Like again, the houses, 這個字是用來形容某物的價錢十分不合理。比如說,房子 if you have to buy a house in my city here , the property is priced exorbitantly. It 如果想在我的城市買房,不動產價值是「過分昂貴」的 means that it's just over priced , unreasonably priced. Well expensive cars. Yes I do feel 意思是價格超出它擁有的價值或不合理的價格。以高檔車為例,我確實認為 that there are certain cars in the market which are over priced. So rather than saying 市場上有些車款式「過分昂貴」了一點。所以與其說這些東西很貴 they are expensive I would use the word they are exorbitant. Right! Or probably you are 我會說這些東西過分昂貴了。好,或你可能談到了飯店 talking about hotels. You know there are certain hotels that charge exorbitantly for phone 有些飯店收取過分昂貴的電話費 calls or they charge exorbitantly for the night stays. So rather than saying these hotels 或是過分昂貴的住宿費。所以除了說住這些飯店很貴 are expensive you can say they are exorbitant. 還可以說這些飯店收費過分昂貴 Let's have a look at another phrase here which is - Daylight robbery. Now daylight robbery 來看看另一個詞「貴得離譜」。同樣的,「貴得離譜」是一種譬喻句 is again a figurative phrase, it's not literally we are talking about being robbed. Well, daylight 並不是像字面上所說的光天化日之下被搶 robbery when something is overcharged or over priced. when you go for vacations, you go 「貴得離譜」是指某物索價過高或是定價過高。當你去度假的時候 to a new place , you don't know the people out there, you don't know how things are priced 你來到一個新的地方,一個認識的人也沒有,你也不知道這裡的物價如何 so at times you feel that the people out there kind of identify you that you are not from 這種時候當人們辨識出你並非當地人 the locality or you are not from the city or country and they tend to overcharge you 或並非來自這個城市、國家的時候,他們通常會抬高物品的價位 so it's absolutely daylight robbery. For example - a glass of juice is 10 dollars, wow that's 「貴得離譜」就是形容此類狀況。例如,一杯果汁要價10塊美金,哇! daylight robbery. So you go to a new city and there's this centre where you buy juice 這可真是「貴得離譜」。當你去到一個新城市的購物中心 from and a glass of juice is for 10 dollars. Well, I don't think so a glass of juice should 買了杯要價10塊美金的果汁。我不認為一杯果汁的價錢應該比2塊美元貴 be more than 2 dollars. But if it's 10 dollars then it's absolutely daylight robbery. So 但如果它要10塊美金那麼它真的是「貴得離譜」了 something that you feel is overpriced or overcharged, it means that it's daylight 當你覺得某物索價過高的時候,就表示這個東西「貴得離譜」 robbery. And then the next expression that we have for you is - to break the bank. Now break 下一個要介紹的詞組是 -「傾家蕩產」 the bank it means to spend the money or to spend all the money that you have in your 傾家蕩產的意思是花光賬戶裡的所有財產 account, in your bank account. So my friends are going to Switzerland and they asked me 譬如說,我的朋友要去瑞士玩,而他們問我 , Hey Niharika , do you want to join us for this trip? And what was my reply to this? 嘿,Niharika,你要不要跟我們一起去?而我怎麼回答呢? I said I would love to go to Switzerland, but if you are planning it now then I think 我說,我很想和你們一起去瑞士,但如果你們現在就計劃要去的話 I will have to break the bank. It means that it's gonna be a little expensive for me right 我必須傾家蕩產才有辦法一起去。意思是現階段這對我而言有一點昂貴 now, I can't really afford it and if I have to go to Switzerland then I got to spend all 我負擔不起,如果我真的要去瑞士的話 the savings that I have in my bank account, so I gotta break the bank. So it obviously 我必須花光戶頭內所有積蓄,所以稱作傾家蕩產。很明顯地 means that something is expensive. To buy this new dress I gotta break the bank, so 這代表某物非常的貴。為了買這件洋裝我必須傾家蕩產 break the bank means I have to spend all the money that I have in my bank which means this 傾家蕩產表示我得花掉賬戶裡所有的錢,換句話說 dress is so expensive. So go ahead and use this phrase. 這件洋裝非常地貴。學會多用這句子吧! And then the last one that I have for you Pay top dollar. Now when you use this expression 最後一個句子是「支付高額費用」,當你使用這個句子的時候 it is actually used for people who are highly paid. Like celebrities when they endorse brands 是用來形容某人被支付高額費用。例如當明星為品牌代言時 they are highly paid. So you can say that companies pay top dollar to these celebrities. 他們就被支付高額的代言費。所以你可以說那些公司支付這些明星高額的費用 It means they are highly priced and they are highly paid to endorse brands. Or I would 意思是他們的代言費非常龐大。我也可以說 say this Louis Vuitton bag well I paid top dollar for it. it means this big brand, this 這個LV包包讓我支付了高額的費用。意思是LV這個大品牌的 nice bag that I bought of Louis Vitton Well I paid too much of money for this. so go ahead 高檔包包讓我花了好大一筆錢才買到。 and use this expression when you are talking about something very very expensive. 當你談到某物非常非常貴的時候學會使用這個句子 This brings me to the end of this lesson. All of these 8 phrases can be used for the 即將進入課程的尾聲,這八個句子 things which are super expensive, well except for the first two which are not very expensive 都能用來形容某物非常昂貴,除了前兩個不是用來形容很貴之外 but yes use these expressions and this will help you to speak fluently and confidently. 多多使用這些句子去表達,這能幫助你說的更流暢也更有自信 I will back with a new lesson for you till then you take care. 我會回來繼續教授大家新課程的,加油!
