  • The surface of the Earth is like a jigsaw puzzle.

    地球的表面就像一張大拼圖一樣。

  • Yes, it's not a single piece of land but approximately 20 pieces of a puzzle that constantly move, but you don't feel it because they move quite slowly.

    沒錯,地球的表面並不是一整塊陸地,而是由 20 塊不斷在移動的拼圖陸塊所組成的。由於移動速度很慢,因此你不會感覺到它在移動。

  • Each of one those puzzle pieces are called 'Tectonic Plates'.

    每塊拼圖陸塊都被稱為「構造板塊」。

  • So whenever those plates hit, bump or slide past another plate, an earthquake is caused!

    當這些板塊互相碰撞,或是一片板塊滑移到另一片板塊上時,就會發生地震!

  • The surface where these plates slip is called the Fault or the Fault plane.

    這些板塊滑動的表面被稱為「斷層」或「斷層面」。

  • So when do you think it happens?

    所以,你覺得地震會在什麼時候發生呢?

  • Well, it happens all the time!

    答案是,地震一直都在持續發生!

  • But hey, don't be scared.

  • Most of the times, we don't feel the quakes as they are too small to reach us.

  • But sometimes, they are so strong that they can be felt over 1000 miles away.

  • The place where the earthquake originates is called the Hypocentre and the place where it occurs on the Earth's surface is called the Epicenter.

    地震發生的起始店被稱為「震源」,而地震傳遞到地表上的中心點則被稱為「震央」。

  • There are three types of Earthquakes.

    地震總共分為三種。

  • Convergent boundary.

    聚合性板塊邊緣地震。

  • Here, one plate is forced over another during an earthquake, which causes a Thrust Fault.

    這種情況是一個板塊在地震時去擠壓到另一個板塊,並形成了逆斷層。

  • Many hills and mountains have been formed due to the Convergent Boundary.

    許多丘陵與山脈都是由聚合性板塊所塑造而成的。

  • Divergent boundary.

  • Here, plates are drifted apart from each other, forming a Rift Zone.

    這種情況是兩個板塊被拉開並分離,並形成了斷裂帶。

  • This kind gives birth to new ocean floors.

    這種地震會形成新的海床。

  • Transform fault.

    轉型斷層地震。

  • Here, the plates here slip by each other and this is also called Strike-Slip.

  • So earthquakes are nothing but the shaking, rolling or a sudden shock of the earth's surface.

    所以地震其實只是地球表面上的晃動、滾動或是突然搖動而已。

  • Now you know that whenever the Earth is stressed or angry, it shakes and grumbles!
