Hi, welcome to China Uncensored, I'm your host Chris Chappell. What else can you say about it other than... 除了以下這番話你還能對他們說什麼 "I love China because they buy my apartments, 我愛中國 因為他們花錢買了我的公寓大樓 they spend, you know, 他們花了 fortunes in Manhattan they give me millions and millions of dollars for these apartments 大筆大筆的錢在曼哈頓置產買樓 他們購買我建造的公寓讓我賺進數百萬美金 and they're great." 他們真的很棒 Yes, China is great! So much different from the Communist Party of even 15 years ago, 相較於十五年前的共產黨作風完全不同 when people could just get "disappeared." You see China is a major global player now. One that you can trust to honor its commitments. Take the "one country, two systems" policy for example. When Great Britain handed Hong Kong over to China in 1997, 英國於 1997 年將香港移交給中國時 they called on the Communist Party to honor Hong Kong's core liberties and way of life, 他們呼籲共產黨尊重香港人民的自由與生活方式 which include freedom of speech and an independent judiciary, 其中包括言論自由與司法獨立 things denied in Mainland China. And the Communist Party said it would, 共產黨也點頭答應 at least for a while. Its promise was "50 years, no change." And it's only been less than 20 years, 到現在不過二十年而已 so you'd think everything would be going pretty well. 所以事情應該都進行得非常平順 Except for some reason, 但不知為什麼 Hong Kongers are unhappy. No, that footage is from 2003, 不,這段影片是 2003 年拍攝的 when half a million Hong Kongers protested Article 23. It would have allowed police to, 允許警方 among other things, 與其他相關單位 search and arrest Hong Kong citizens without evidence. No, this is from when I was in Hong Kong in 2014 covering the Umbrella Movement. Hong Kongers were unhappy about the Communist Party's interference in their elections. No, that's Hong Kong McDonalds' delicious taro pie that for some reason they feel should 不,這是香港麥當勞推出的甜美芋頭派 不知為什麼 be denied to American consumers. Ah, that's what I'm talking about. 啊,就是這一段 The protests this month. They're over the mysterious "disappearance" of five booksellers who sold political books 人們為五名販售批評共產黨相關政治議題的書商 critical of the Communist Party. 「神秘失蹤」而奔走抗議 "I would say that this is a turning point for suppression of our freedom." Hong Kong is full of these kind of bookstores. In fact, that's the first thing I saw in the Hong Kong airport. All sorts of books criticizing political figures: 這裡販售各類批評政治人物的書籍 Xi Jinping. 習近平 Jiang Zemin. 江澤明 Guo Meimei?! 郭美美? Wow, that's hard-hitting politics. Anyway, these kinds of books are banned in Mainland China. But because of the one country two systems policy, 不過因為一國兩制的政策 they can be freely sold in Hong Kong. That's why the main clientele of these bookstores are Mainland Chinese tourists. 這說明了為何這些書店的主要顧客是中國觀光客 "Where are most of your customers from?" "I can say like 80-90% are from Mainland, Mainland visitor, yeah." 百分之八九十來自中國 中國觀光客,對 "So they come here and buy the books and take them back, illegally?" "Haha, yeah, they try. " 呵呵,是 他們試著這麼做 Now surely, the Communist Party must be frustrated by this. But since it made a commitment not to touch Hong Kong's freedoms till 2047, 但是既然中共承諾 2047 年前不干預香港的自由 it would never do something like, say, 他們絕對不會做出... 像是 kidnap the people who run these bookstores, right? Because if they did... 因為如果他們真這麼做 "I think you are spelling the death knell for one country two systems. 「我認為此舉無疑開立了一國兩制的死亡證明 You can forget about it. 這是不可能的事 Nobody would feel safe in Hong Kong simply by speaking up." And the Communist Party would never want people to not feel safe speaking up. It's just...a coincidence that in the course of 3 months, 只不過... 過去三個月 非常巧合的 five people from Causeway Bay Books disappeared 銅鑼灣五間書店的經營者都碰巧失蹤 and that it came ahead of the publishing of a book that allegedly exposes an extramarital 而這些失蹤案都在一本聲稱將曝光中國領導習近平婚外情的書 affair of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. So how about this, my China Uncensored super sleuths: 收看「中國解密」的超級偵探們 Let's piece together the chain of events, 讓我們逐一拼湊起這一連串事件 and see if we can't figure out who's behind it! 看看是否能夠找出幕後主使 The game is on! Let's start with the latest, 先從最近發生的 the Case of Lee Bo. 李波案談起 He disappears on December 30, 他在十二月三十日當天失去音訊 after telling his wife he's going to his warehouse to fetch some books. He leaves his Mainland travel permit at home, 他將港澳同胞回鄉證留在家裡 which means he couldn't have entered the Mainland--voluntarily. It also means there'd be no official record of him leaving Hong Kong. But, about a week later, 但是一個星期之後 he calls his wife, 他致電給妻子 telling her that in fact he is in the Mainland, "assisting with an investigation." He also speaks to her in Mandarin, 並以中文與她交談 even though the couple usually speak Cantonese together. So let's see what we have so far: 讓我們分析手上握有的證據 A 65 year old man, 一位年屆六十五歲的男子 who said in recent interviews he hasn't been back to the Mainland in two or three years 在最近一個訪談中說自己已有兩三年不敢返回中國 because he feared for his safety, 因為他擔心個人的人身安危 is on a secret mission in China, 現在卻在中國進行一項秘密任務 but won't say where he was or when he'd be back. 而且不肯透漏自己身在哪裡 或是何時返家的消息 I'm sorry gang, 非常抱歉 this case is unsolvable. And even though Lee was also a British citizen, 儘管李擁有英國籍 China doesn't recognize dual citizenship. 中國卻無視於他的雙重國籍身分 "This person in question is first and foremost a Chinese citizen...it is not necessary for 「他首先是中國公民... 各方我看沒有必要作 anyone to make groundless speculations." 」 "Hong Kong's affairs are purely China's internal affairs, (in which) any foreign country has 「香港事務全屬中國內政,任何外國都 no right to interfere. 無權干涉」 So basically they're saying no other country can say who China can and can't kidnap. 基本上,他們是說 其他國家無權干預中國可以或不可以綁架哪些人 Not that they kidnapped anyone, mind you. 但再次提醒您 他們可沒有綁架任何人 Lee went to China to help with that investigation. 李是到中國去協助調查 As for the other four, well, if you really think about it, anyone unscrupulous enough 至於其他四人 如果你仔細想想 to be willing to publish slanderous tales about the great and glorious leaders of the 任何想要出版關於偉大、光榮的黨領導人醜聞的不道德人士 Communist Party, probably were also involved in some other shady things. 或許也涉及其他不道德的行為 Oh, hey this just in! 喔,嘿,剛剛傳來的消息! One of the guys who disappeared, 其中一名失蹤者 didn't disappear at all! Gui Minhai, 並未失蹤 桂民海 who also has Swedish dual citizenship, 擁有瑞典雙重國籍 just so happened to show up for a conveniently timed, 碰巧選在這個敏感的時機現身 tearful confession on Chinese state-run TV. 在中國的官方媒體上落淚認錯 You see, he didn't disappear in Thailand in October after all. 看吧,去年十月他並未在泰國失蹤 He voluntarily turned himself in to Chinese authorities after being on the run for killing 他自願向中共當局投案 坦承在 2003 一場車禍中 a young woman in a car crash back in 2003. 撞死一名年輕女子後逃逸 And it's not important that there are some discrepancies in the case. 雖然本案充滿矛盾 但這不重要? For example, according to a CCTV report from 2005 on the crash, 舉例來說 根據 2005 年中國中央電視台針對這場車禍的報導 the perpetrator Gui Minhai was 46 years old. 肇事逃逸者桂敏海是四十六歲 But this book publisher Gui Minhai was only 39 back then. 但是這位出版商桂民海當年只有三十九歲 And his name is written like this, 他的名字寫法是桂民海 but that CCTV report used a different character with a similar sound. 但央視卻用同音字桂敏海來代替 It's also not important that Gui's daughter never even heard about any accident or manslaughter 另外,桂民海的女兒從沒聽聞過這件車禍或是這樁殺人案 charge. 也一點都不重要 What matters is that in his confession, he specifically says it's unnecessary for the 重點在於他在自白中特別強調 Swedish government to get involved. 瑞典政府沒必要涉入此案 "I don't want any individuals organizations 「我也不希望任何個人和機構 including the Swedish government, 包括瑞典方面 to get involved or intervene in this matter. I still feel I'm a Chinese." 但是我真切地感到我還是一個中國人」 So now we know that of the five missing booksellers, 現在我們知道五名失蹤的書商中 one is clearly helping with an investigation, 其中一人顯然在協助調查 and the other is clearly a very bad man. 另一個人則是罪大惡極 So in conclusion... 所以結論是... we should just stop asking questions about the other three. 我們應該對其他三人的下落不再提出質疑 Because at the end of the day, 因為事到如今 China honors its commitment to one country, two systems. 中國仍遵守一國兩制的承諾 And anyone who disagrees, 任何不同意這個說法的人 won't for long. 也不會堅持太久 So what do you think? 那你認為呢? Can China be trusted? 該相信中國的說法嗎? And there's only one correct answer to that. 這個問題只有一個正確的答案 So leave your "yes" comment below, 所以將你的「我相信」留言留在下方的意見欄 and subscribe for more episodes of China Uncensored. 並訂閱「中國解密」來收看更多精彩節目 Once again I'm Chris Chappell, see you next time. 我是主持人 Chris Chappell 下次再見
