Chinese voters on Saturday elected a new president:

華人選民在星期六選出了新任的總統

Tsai Ing-wen!

蔡英文

And by Chinese voters,

我指的華人選民

I mean the people of Taiwan.

是指台灣人民

Not the people living in the other China,

不是住在海峽另一邊的中國人

the one without elections

該國並無選舉

even though their leader is still called the "president" for some reason.

雖然他們的領導人也自稱為總統

Still waiting for that interview, by the way.

我還等著要採訪你喔

Now sure, Taiwan has a democracy.

可以確定的是台灣是個民主國家

But according to my favorite Chinese state-run media Global Times,

根據我「最喜愛」的中國官方媒體環球時報的報導

"the 'one person, one vote' system in Taiwan is not mature."

「台灣的一人一票選舉制度並不成熟」

By which, I assume, they mean

我想他們的意思是指

it's less mature than mainland China's

台灣的選舉制度比起中國的

"one person, no vote" system.

「一人沒票」制度更不成熟

Clearly superior.

顯然更好

Anyway, not only did Tsai Ing-wen win Taiwan's election by a pretty big margin,

蔡英文不僅以大幅差距贏得選戰

her party, the DPP, also took 60 percent of the seats in parliament.

她所屬的民主進步黨還拿下國會百分之六十的席次

The opposing KMT party,

對手國民黨

which has been leading Taiwan for the last eight years,

執政了八年

suffered a big defeat.

卻吞下大敗

Now the US government has been watching this election closely

美國政府密切關注這場選舉

because US-Taiwan relations are,

因為台美關係...

let's say, politically sensitive with respect to mainland China.

這麼說吧 在政治上格外敏感並處處尊重中國

Tsai Ing-wen's party, the DPP,

蔡英文所屬的民主進步黨

is known for taking a more pro-independence stance.

向來以親獨立立場著稱

That is, asserting that Taiwan is not just another province of China,

他們堅稱台灣不是中國大陸的另一個省分

but its own sovereign entity.

而具有主權實體

The Communist Party,

中國共產黨

in no subtle terms,

口氣毫無委婉之意

disagrees with this stance.

不贊同民主進步黨的立場

The Chinese Communist Party has hundreds of missiles aimed at Taiwan and has promised

中國共產黨握有上百枚飛彈瞄準台灣

to use force to take back the island if it declares independence.

並承諾如果台灣宣布獨立將使用武力占領台灣

They even held Taiwan invasion training drills last year.

去年 他們甚至進行攻佔台灣的演習

Global Times, always the rational voice,

代表「理性」言論的環球時報

responded to Tsai's election by saying any pushes for independence were mere "hallucinations"

回應蔡英文當選後若推動任何獨立運動不啻為妄想

and that if she were to "cross the red line of cross-Straits relations, she will meet

如果她想要跨越海峽兩岸關係的紅線

a dead end."

她將自掘死路

Hopefully that's just a poor choice of words,

希望這只是一時找不到適切的字眼

and not a thinly veiled death threat.

而不是毫無隱埋的死亡威脅

But you can understand why Tsai's election could be upsetting to the Communist Party.

不難明白為何蔡英文的當選惹惱了中共

The outgoing political party, the KMT

卸下執政大任的國民黨

has for the past eight years pushed for closer ties with mainland China.

八年來不斷推動與大陸之間的緊密關係

They signed an important trade agreement,

他們簽署了重要的貿易協定

encouraged cross-straight tourism,

鼓勵兩岸觀光發展

and made it easier for mainland companies to invest in Taiwan and vice versa.

開放雙方資金互相投資

Now Tsai hasn't exactly been against ties with mainland China.

蔡英文並不反對與中國往來

Her China policy has just been intentionally vague.

她的中國政策只是刻意模糊不清

So will Tsai push for Taiwan independence?

蔡英文是否會推動台灣獨立？

And will that mean the Communist Party will invade Taiwan,

這是否意味中共將侵略台灣

forcing the US to fulfill its promise to come to Taiwan's defense

迫使美國實現保衛台灣的承諾

sparking the deadliest US military conflict in Asia since the Vietnam war?

成為自從越戰結束後 點燃美軍與亞洲之間最嚴重的衝突？

No.

No, that's not going to happen.

Less than 10 percent of Taiwan's citizens actually want Taiwan to declare independence.

不到百分之十的台灣人民支持台灣獨立

The great majority want to preserve the status quo:

大部分的人都希望能夠維持現狀

That is, just leave it in the current, sort of awkward state.

也就是保持當前這種矛盾對立的狀態

So if Tsai is smart

如果蔡夠聰明的話

and by all accounts she is

證據也顯示出她的聰明才智

she's going to go with... status quo.

她將... 維持現狀

Understandably, though, the US is concerned that even without a war,

不難理解的是美國關心即使沒有發動戰爭

there could be some rocky relations with mainland China.

台灣與中國大陸之間的關係將陷入僵局

When relations are smooth,

唯有兩岸關係和平發展

the US can free up its resources to deal withall the other rocky relations the US is involved with.

美方才有餘力處理他們所涉入的其他緊張關係

But even smooth relations, well…

但就算兩岸關係和平發展

the Communist Party has a plan for that, too.

中共仍另有其他計畫

As the Communist Party worked with the KMT to build stronger economic ties,

伴隨中共與國民黨建立緊密的經濟關係

Taiwan has become increasingly dependant on mainland China.

台灣變得愈來愈依賴中國大陸

Case in point:

Taiwanese born singer Chou Tzu-yu,

台灣歌手周子瑜

member of the K-pop group Twice.

K-Pop 團體 Twice 的團員之一

During her appearance on a variety show on South Korean TV,

she waived the Taiwan flag.

Then Chinese people,

including possibly the same type of 50-cent commentators who write pro-CCP things on my

YouTube channel,

were upset. Outraged, in fact.

皆憤怒不平 更貼切來說是氣炸了

How dare she wave the official Taiwan flag...

她怎敢在韓國

while in Korea?

揮舞台灣的國旗？

Long story short,

長話短說

after a media firestorm,

經過媒體大肆報導後

Chou was forced to apologize.

周被迫公開道歉

And now she's taking a break from performing in China so she can, you know,

現在她只能暫停在中國的演出，所以她能...

reflect seriously on her actions.

認真反省自己的言行

Many think her Korean management company JYP Entertainment felt this apology was necessary to,

許多人怪罪她的南韓經紀公司 JYP 娛樂強迫她道歉

you guessed it,

不難猜想

preserve their access to the Chinese market.

就為了替他們在大陸的市場留後路

So suffice it to say,

不必我多說

Cross-Strait relations are complicated.

兩岸關係十分複雜

Nobody wants war.

沒人希望戰事發生

But a lot of people on both sides don't like the way things are.

但是兩國的人民都不喜歡現在的狀態

And the CCP is using economics to control Taiwan.

中共利用經濟控制台灣

In other words, Tsai's got her work cut out for her.

也就是說 蔡將面臨艱鉅的任務

But Beijing wouldn't be wise to underestimate her.

但北京若低估她就不太明智了

A leaked US embassy cable called her, "extremely capable and very persuasive."

一封洩密的美國大使館電報指她：「能力很強且十分具有說服力」

Plus she likes cats.

加上她喜歡貓

And we know how dangerous cats are.

我們都知道貓是很危險的動物
