I am Ricky Nierva and I am an artist. I am very very lucky to say that I am 我得非常榮幸的說 a production designer at Pixar Animation Studios, 我在皮克斯擔任美術指導 (Production designer) 註:樹立美學風格的設計師 which is one of the best animation studios in the world. It is hard to believe, but I've been in the industry, 這真是讓人難以置信,但我已經身在動畫工業這個領域將近20年了 animation industry, for almost 20 years now. And one thing that really terrifies me, 有件事情真的讓我相當恐懼 other that being on the stage right now, 比起現在站在這裡,還要令人感到害怕的一件事 is this. Right here. This blank sheet of paper. This is very very intimidating to an artist, I think. Its emptiness could be very intimidating. There is so many opportunities, 但這也代表著許多不同機會 so many possibilities of what could be on this thing. You know, I have a little, a quick story 你瞧,我有一個小小的故事要告訴你 about a theater and a director at a theater, 關於一間戲院,跟一位導演的故事 where the director came to work, during rehearsals, 在導演準備排演時 the director opened the door to the theater 導演打開了戲院的大門 and noticed, on the stage, 他注意到了舞台上的舞者 that the dancers were basically doing nothing. Some dancers were stretching, some dancers were, 有些正在伸展身體,有些正在..... you know, reading a book or something, 你知道的,正在讀劇本什麼的 but they were basically doing nothing. 但他們基本上就是無所事事 And the director, bewildered, 導演感到相當困惑,走到舞台前方 walked down to the front of the stage 導演感到相當困惑,走到舞台前方 and he noticed the choreographer had his head in his hands 導演注意到負責編排舞蹈的人用手掩面 and he looks at the choreographer and angrily says: 導演對著編舞指導發飆 "What 's going on here?" And the choreographer looks at the director and goes: 編舞指導回答 "Nothing is happening. It's nothing, you know, it's just not working. Nothing." And the director looks at the choreographer and says: 導演看著編舞指導說 "Well do something, so I can change it!" (Production designer) So, being a production designer 是一件讓人很不安的事 is a very intimidating thing. A production designer is basically in charge 基本上,美術指導是負責整部影片的視覺風格 of the overall look of the film. And that's very scary because 因為在皮克斯的同事曾經跟我說..... at Pixar a colleague has said to me, 他的名字是Jason Deamer, 他是皮克斯的art director his name is Jason Deamer, he's an art director at Pixar, 他說"痛苦是一時的,但遜斃的感覺卻是一輩子的" Pain is temporary, suck is forever has said: "Pain is temporary, suck is forever". Pain is temporary, suck is forever (Laughter) So, I'm gonna do, the theme here is 然後做些瘋狂的事 "Uncharted Waters" and do something crazy 然後說 : 這真是爛透了! and I just said "suck", 所以我要做些有希望的事,讓它看起來別這麼糟 so I'm gonna do something that hopefully doesn't suck too badly 讓這件事對我來說有更放鬆的感覺 and I'm gonna make this more relaxing to me. So I'm going to just-- OK,這依舊很爛 OK, that sucked but, 但是在這背後有個意義 there's a point behind this. Basically, where do you begin, right? 蘋果跟皮克斯的創始者之一 : 賈伯斯 Apple and Pixar founder Steve Jobs 他說過,讓我們看這裡 has said, let's see here, 設計不能只是看起來怎樣,感覺起來怎樣 "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like, 設計是它本身是怎麼運作的 design is how it works." Film making is a purely collaborative 是一種美術形式,這也是我為什麼這麼喜歡的原因 art form, and that's why I love it so much. To make a film's design work, 美術必須去支撐故事本身 the art must support the story. 在皮克斯,我們盡其所能嘗試去說出最好的故事 and at Pixar we try to tell the best stories that we possibly can. You know, the first time I got to production design 是電影 : 天外奇蹟 ( Up ) was on the movie "Up", 在座還沒看過的各位 and for those that have not seen it, 你得去馬上離席去看 you need to leave right now and watch it. But I apologize if I ruin the film for you, 他叫卡爾爺爺 ( Carl Fredricksen ) when I say, it's about a story, about a man 卡爾爺爺就是我們在電影的一開始看到毛頭小孩 named Carl Fredricksen. And Carl Fredricksen, in the beginning of the film, 他遇見了他一生的摯愛 : 愛莉 ( Ellie ) we meet him as a very young child 他們墜入愛河,他們步入教堂 and he meets the love of his life, her name is Ellie, 他們經歷了種種人生的考驗與苦難 they fall in love, they get married, 你看到他們慢慢變老的過程 they go through all the trials and tribulations of life. You get to a point were they get old 如果你覺得我搞砸了這部電影,我再次向你致歉 and Ellie dies. Again, I'm sorry if i ruined it for you, 但我覺得是這部電影最棒的五分鐘 but, that's in the first five minutes of the movie 對卡爾爺爺的故事來說,這真的是相當有力的開場 and I think it's the most beautiful five minutes of the movie. It's a really powerful setup 對卡爾爺爺來說 to Carl Fredricksen's story. And then Carl, basically, at that point 他的人生開始陷入瓶頸 starts being boxed in, 他基本上就是一個不懂變通的人 starts being stuck in his ways. He's basically unchanged man. So, the approach I took to designing that 如果你能繼續聽我說 is all based upon that idea, 我將會告訴你,我設計的著眼點在哪? and if you bear with me here, 還有關於這整部電影的設計方法 I'm gonna show you a bit about how I think 一切是這麼開始的 about designing for that movie. And it all started with this. Basically, I go to work, 然後回家 I draw that, I show the director 然後上網 and then I go home and OK~這只是開玩笑! turn on the Internet. OK that was a joke. It takes some time to translate the jokes, I'm sure. No, it starts with a simple idea, 它是靜止的,不是具有動態的 the square. And the square to me, while I'm designing, 而且在根本上具有自我限制的意象 it's static, it's not dynamic, 所以當我在設計時,我思考了這些事情 it's solid and stable, 在形狀上 but it's also basically boxed in. So, as I'm thinking of these things while I'm designing 所有的想法 on the shape, 方形的眼鏡 things come together. And all of these ideas, 他有雙方形的耳朵 and here's some square glasses, 這就是卡爾爺爺的基礎 is supported by that square. 看,先別鼓掌,我還沒畫完 He's got square ears, 他有方形的身體 and this is basically Carl Fredricksen "航向未知的海域",我通常不會在人們面前像這樣畫畫 see, hold your applause, I'm not done yet. He's got a square body. Uncharted waters, I don't normally draw in front of people like this. So, you're getting first time stuff going on here. He's got square hands, 那麼,在卡爾爺爺旅程中的另外一個角色 a lot of squares to support that simple, 想要嘗試去改變他 simple idea. So, another character that takes Carl through his journey 一個圓圈? and actually tries to change him 因此,我決定這麼作 and make him a more well-rounded character, 圓形象徵著積極跟向前 is a character named Russel. And what's simpler shape that contrasts that square 這具備了所有幫助卡爾爺爺更加圓融的條件 but a circle? So, I'll get here So, the circle symbolizes positivity and moving forward. It's a very dynamic thing, It's all of these things that 一個非常積極的孩子 need to help Carl get more well-rounded. So Russel was based upon this idea. It's kind of like a balloon shape. And Russel, is this wilderness explorer. And he's got all these circular motifs all around his body. And he has, well, I'm not done yet. I wanted to show you all the details around his body, 以完成荒野探險家的目標 which are very circular. And we think about all theses things, 每一個徽章都有它自己的故事 you know, he's got this sash, 但就在這裡,空了一塊 and part of the story 小羅想要得到"幫助老人"的徽章 is that he's collecting all of these badges 依照先前的設計概念,這空白就在心窩這邊 as a wilderness explorer 其中一個想法是代表他們可以互相合作,互補缺憾 and it's all these circular things 現在我們有了方形跟圓形 and each badge has a story, 但對卡爾爺爺來說,還有一個故事的重點 but right here is this empty one. He's trying to get the "Assisting the elderly" badge, 這是愛莉的徽章 and by design it's over his heart. And one of these things is that they would work with each other. You have the square and the circle. But for Carl there's also a story point 我們考慮到所有我們設計的細節,這是相當費時的過程 of this circular symbol right over his heart, 你知道嗎?皮克斯在大約花了4年左右去完成這部電影 and that's the Ellie badge. So you need to watch the movie in order to 當我們在構思時 understand what's going on there. But, you know, we think about all of these things 我們也樂於把這些簡單的造型元素放在電影中,隨處可見 as we design and it's a very long process. You know, it takes an average of four years 靠近他的床邊都是這些方形的符號 to make an animated film at Pixar. And we also, while we are thinking of making the movie, 這樣設計真的很有樂趣 we have fun putting these simple shapes 我們是這樣想的 all over the movie. So you can see here, where Carl wakes up, 當在觀看整部電影時,你可能不會注意到 on his side of the bed are the square symbology, 但是你卻能感受到 and on her side is this circle symbology. And so, you know, it's fun to do this 但是在你心底可以確實感受到 and we have kind of these ideas, 這裡也是 but the main point is to not see it 在這屋子裡的相框 while you are watching the movie, 如果是卡爾爺爺的獨照,那一定是方形的相框 but you should feel it. If we do our job right, you don't notice this stuff, 有人會問: 如果他們一起合照呢? but you feel it. It's also here, 看到這張圖片,你會發現光線明暗區分隔開了小羅跟卡爾爺爺 in picture frames around the house. If Carl is by himself, he's in a square picture frame. It's just cut right through the shot. If Ellie is in the picture frame by herself, she's in an oval picture frame. Someone asked: "What if they're in the picture together?" Well, it's a square frame with an oval mat. You can see in this image, Russel is literally 而卡爾爺爺卻是相反的低彩度 separated from from Carl with lighting. It's just cut right through the shot. And all of these things support that simple idea, 相當明顯的,這是道具設計 basing upon that simple idea of circle and squares. You can see the circular motif all around his design 你可以看到圓形和方形 and his very colorful, very saturated color. So he's trying to get color back into Carl, 你可以看到他變得柔和許多 he's trying to get him more well rounded. Very clearly it's in the prop design. 他的膚色曬成偏褐 Carl and Ellie's chair, 他的身上有更多的活力 you can see the circle and square 這些想法是一種把事情簡化的過程 shape vocabulary there, shape language. And at the end of the film, after Carl has gone through his adventure, 但我們都知道 : 簡單不是一定要簡化 you can see that he's a more softened character. He's more well rounded. You know, he's tanned, "我花了四年的時間去畫出像拉裴爾的技巧" he has more life in him. And the idea of this, is that 孩子有一種令人驚艷而且直接的方式,去畫出他們想表達的感受 it's a process of making things simple. But we all know that simple is 這是我的女兒Olivia所畫的美麗塗鴉 not necessarily simpler. Pablo Picasso, the famous artist has said: 她無聊地睡著了 "It has taken me four years to paint like Rafael, "航向未知的海域",這就是這句話的意思 but a lifetime to paint like a child." You know, kids have an amazing 我也永遠不會忘記 directness to the way they draw and express themselves. This is a beautiful drawing by my daughter Olivia, 讓我來告訴各位,這個小女孩有多們讓人驚奇的活力 who's actually in the audience right now. Uncharted waters, this is what it's all about. She's never gonna forget that. I'm never gonna forget it. Oh my gosh, this is amazing. Let me tell you about how amazingly full of life she is. No, she drew this drawing and, you know, 這就是你可以跟別人溝通的原因 young kids, they just jump in. They're joyful when they create. You know, Eugene was talking about that, 我的第一張畫是在我三歲大的時候 about the kids, 我問我媽 : 誰在我的床頭畫畫? very young kids will just dive in. You know, they're not afraid of that blank piece of paper. They can't wait to fill that blank piece of paper. They simplify down to it's purest essence. You know, pure drawing comes from the soul. It comes from deep inside of you, 不過,我媽沒有生氣 and that's how you can communicate. You know, I've been drawing, 她給了我幾張紙去畫畫,而不是畫在牆上 my first drawings are when 我非常的感激她的包容 I think I was three years old. I asked my mom: "Who did these drawings on my bed?" 她是我的啟蒙者,她也支持我的上癮 and she said: "You did". OK,那是笑話 "You found a permanent marker, 我真的很愛我的媽媽這麼做 you destroyed your bed, 當我還小時,我完全迷失了 and then you went to the walls. (Getting in the zone) You kept going around the house". And my mom, instead of getting angry, 我會製造一些聲響,但還是完全的迷失自己 she brought home paper for me to draw 我會製造一些聲響,但還是完全的迷失自己 on the paper instead of her walls. So I'm very very thankful and appreciate 你知道的"鑽入死胡同" that she's an enabler and she supports my addiction, 孩童也會如此,用繪圖方面來說,他們費心在上面 and, OK that was a joke. I love my mom for doing that, really. Lilly. I would get completely lost when I was a child, 她會殺了我 and it's called "Getting in the zone" 天啊!我的小孩會宰了我! where the world would just disappear, Lilly,她大概四歲的時候 and I would make sound effects and I would just 還是五歲左右 completely lose myself and, you know, 實際上也許是三或四歲時 as an artist, that's the thing you try to strive for. You know, getting in that zone. Kika. Kids also, in terms of drawing, they get to the heart of it. My youngest daughter who's also in the audience, Lilly. She's not sleeping. Is she? She's gonna kill me. Oh my gosh, my kids are gonna kill me. Lilly, when she was around four years old, 當壁畫上的動物在奔跑時,牠們的確多了好幾條腿 she's about five, 這就像是最初在洞穴裡出現的動畫一樣 maybe actually when she was about three or four, 這真是多麼讓人啟發的一件事啊 she drew this amazing drawing of our pet dog right here. Kika is a little Doxin, a little wiener dog. And I looked at the drawing, I loved it, but I said 我的目標是繼續畫下去 "Hey, Lilly, dogs only have four legs". And she said "She's running, papa". Isn't that amazing? That is so amazing to me. And there's cave drawings, you know, 你知道的,開始動手做些什麼 where there's animals running, and there're multiple legs. It's like the first animation, in a cave. "早點失敗,常常失敗" ( Fail early, fail often ) So, you know, it's just so inspirational. I look at kids' drawings and that pure, 但是,你必須要有勇氣,敢於去冒險 that purity in this things that Ι just feed from. And the last thing is, 我們來看看 ultimately kids are not afraid of making mistakes. My goal is to continue to draw 謝謝各位 so some day I will be able to draw like a child. So, my last point is, let's come back to this. I would say if anything you get out of this talk is- don't be intimidated by the blank sheet. You know, start with something. Start with a scribble, start with something. "Fail early, fail often" That's a saying that we have at the studio. But you need to be brave and take risks. I'm gonna create something out of this here. Lets see-- It's a duck holding its egg close to its body. (Laughter) (Applause) Thank you.
