If you are at this lesson, it’s because you probably have trouble with vocabulary, 如果你來上這堂課,代表你對背生字有一些困擾 and what do I mean you have trouble with vocabulary 怎麼樣子叫有困擾呢? you are probably saying ‘I learn all these words 你可能會說,這些字我都學過 they teach me these things and within hours, days, weeks I forget everything 這個都有教過了,但過了幾個小時、幾天、幾星期我就全忘記了 Well it makes sense, it’s not your fault, it’s not your teacher’s fault, there is a method for things to work 嗯…這是很合理的!這不是你的錯,也不是老師的錯,這可以透過一些方法來解決 I mean there is always a way to make things work a little better than something else. 總是會有一些方法能讓事情更順利的對吧 Writing out a word 20 times is not going to help you. 重複抄寫單字20遍不會幫助你 Later on if you check we will have the three-U method and that will teach you how to remember vocabulary 等一下我們會告訴你3U的方法,教你如何記住生字 that you won’t forget it, but right now what I want you to do is master vocabulary and what do I mean by master it. 而且不會忘記,但是現在我要你做的是熟悉一個單字,怎麼樣是熟悉呢? Lot of students don’t take the time to actually get a full picture. 很多的學生不會花時間了解一個單字 Imagine a picture that’s got a rose, and it’s in a beautiful red, it’s glorious, great color 想像一張圖片裡有個玫瑰,它是漂亮的紅色,是嬌貴的、飽滿的顏色 you know the sun behind it, you can see everything, 你還看到後面有陽光,你可以看到整個畫面 now imagine that picture black-and-white, what are you going to miss? 現在,如果這張圖片是黑白的,你會錯過哪些? You think you have the picture because there is a rose, but do you see the beautiful yellow, 你知道會有個玫瑰,但是你能看到美麗的金黃色嗎? no because it’s black-and-white, so there is something missing from that picture 不會,因為是黑白的畫面,所以有一個部分你錯過了 and what’s missing from that picture can sometimes be depth, color and brightness. 而你忽略的可能是深度、顏色、亮度 Once you have that it’s hard to forget, because when I said imagine a rose, you imagine it in color 當你有個畫面就很難忘記,因為當我要你想像一朵玫瑰,你想到顏色 maybe with a little water on it, maybe someone holding it, but that’s what you need to remember it. 或者一點水滴在花上面,或許有人拿著他,但是那些是幫助你記住的 So we are going to work with vocabulary and look at the four things you need to do to say I have mastered vocabulary 所以我們現在來看看單字,如果要熟悉一個單字,有四件事情需要完成 so this vocabulary belongs to me, okay. Now the number one thing we are going to look at is understand it 所以現在這個是這個單字,好,現在我們要做的第一件事情是了解他 well what do I mean by understand. Many students open a dictionary, look at a word, look at the definition 什麼是了解他呢?很多同學會翻開字點,查單字,查意思 one definition, and then say ‘okay I know’, or they look at the four, that’s not it 一個意思,然後他們就會說,好了我知道了,也可能他們看全部四個意思,不過不是這樣 when I say understand it, take that definition, write it out, take a dictionary--ary ary…ary. special sound effects 當我說了解他,意思是看定義、寫下來、拿出字典典…典…特殊音效 and write out that definition, then what I suggest is you write one, two or three sentences, 寫下單字的定義,然後我建議你寫下一個、兩個或三個句子 right, showing your usage of that word in the proper context. 沒錯,用這個字造出適當的句子 If it has three definitions well guess what, son, bub, you have to do three words, 如果單字有三個意思,你就要寫三次 so that means making nine sentences, this sounds like a lot of work, 代表著你要造出九個句子,這聽起來有很多功課要做 I want you to remember something, don’t do the work now, you have to learn it again later. 我希望你記住,如果你現在不做,過一陣子你還是要再學一次 And what’s worse is if it took, if it takes five minutes to do what I am describing 更慘的是,如果你馬上做我告訴你的事,可能需要花五分鐘 it will take you 20 to 30 minutes to do it later, that’s six times the amount of time because it is hard to do 但是如果你過了二、三十分鐘後再做,你就會花六倍的時間去完成,因為會更難完成 No one said learning a language is easy 沒有人說學習一個語言是簡單的 but it can be fun and it’s very productive and there is something nice about having new vocabulary and having it 但是它可以是很好玩的,而且是很有效率的,學習新的單字、記憶他是很有趣的 learning quickly and keeping it. So first thing to understand, write out the definition 很快又很有效的學習他,所以第一件事情是了解他,寫下他的定義 alright, write out the definition, and when you have the definition then write example sentences, your example sentences, alright 好的,寫出意思,當你知道它的意思之後,寫下例句,你自己的造句 Let’s go with the word ceiling for instance, there are two definitions to the word ceiling, number one 拿”天花板”Ceiling這個字為例子,這個單字有兩個意思,第一 ceiling is the top of a room, the top part, there is the floor, there is the ceiling, 天花板式房間的頂端,最上面的部分,這裡有地板,這裡有天花板 the ceiling is inside the building, roof is on top of the building 天花板是在建築物的裡面,屋頂是在建築物的外面 A second definition for ceiling is the limit of something, the ceiling, you cannot go any higher than this; 天花板的第二個意思是某個東西的極限,界限,你不能在到達更高的地方 in business we talk about a glass ceiling, alright, let me talk about, you can only go so far and then no more. 在商業上,我們說”透明天花板”,好的,讓我跟你說,你只能到達這邊,不能在更高了 I will give you an example, so how would I use it to make sure I understand it, 我給你一個例子,所以我要怎麼確定我了解單字了呢? well my first sentence might be for ceiling and a roof, I will paint the walls blue and the ceiling yellow, ceiling yellow, 我的第一個句子可能是天花板和屋頂,我會把牆壁漆成藍色,天花板黃色、黃色的天花板 oh god look it is like the sun, got it ceiling is inside, you don’t paint your roof yellow, it’s inside yellow 噢!天啊!看起來就像陽光一樣,天花板是在室內,你不會在屋頂上刷油漆,刷黃色的屋頂,這是房子裡面的顏色 what about the second one, okay, like what the second one is, the limit of something 第二個意思呢?好,第二個意思是某件事的極限 For a salary for instance, so I’d say the ceiling, for my salary at work is $20,000 以薪水為例子,我功做薪水的天花板是兩萬元 they will not pay me more than that so I need to get a new job, that’s the limit 他們不會再付我更多錢了,所以我需要找個新的工作,那是極限了 So I’ve written out these definitions, it gives me an understanding and maybe even where I should use it. 所以我寫出這些意思,這幫助我了解單字甚至如何使用之 What about the next one, the next one we are going to do is pronounce. Well how do you pronounce something? 接下來呢?接下來我們要唸他,你要怎麼唸出一個字呢? Well here is what I usually say, the best way to learn pronunciation is to do phonetics, simple phonetics, break it down. 我通常會這麼做,最好的發音方式就是先拆音節,簡單的音節,把它拆開 Let’s go back to the word ceiling again, okay, ceiling okay, I would have done this 讓我們回到ceiling這個字,好的,ceiling,我會這樣子做 see ling - by the way you spell ceiling like this, but I do not care about how I spell it See ling,順便說一下,你會這樣拼ceiling這個字,但是我不在意我怎麼拼他 it is how do I say it, you say see-ling 重點是你怎麼說,你會說see ling if you are nautical, you like water you might put, sea-ling. Phonetics, how do you say it? 如果你是個航海家,你喜歡水,你可能會這樣寫 sea ling,音節,你怎麼說 These are completely different, but who cares how you spell it, 這是完全不一樣的,但是誰在你怎麼拼字呢? how do I say it because once I get the phonetics for it I can pronounce it, alright 我怎麼說他?一旦我知道它的音節,我就可以唸他 Or big C-ling, you get the picture, we can just keeping going, get the phonetics? 或大寫C ling,你就有個畫面了,我們可以一直這樣持續進行,你有掌握到音節了嗎? Do it slowly one part at a time, because if you go see-see-see ling-ling-ling, ceiling 每個部份都放慢速度唸,你可以這樣see-see-see ling-ling-ling, ceiling then you can put it together and pronounce it properly like a native speaker, you like that, I do 然後你把他湊再一起,然後正確的唸他,好像母語一樣,你喜歡這樣嗎?我喜歡 I teach my students that all the time, break it down, master each point, put them together only at the end 我都這樣教我的學生,拆解他,了解每個音,最後再把它放在一起 Third, spell it, okay. Spelling is easy, that’s part of vocabulary, right 第三,拼字,好的,拼字很簡單,這是單字的一部分對吧 because we have to do vocabulary we both say it and we both write it or 當我們單字的時候我們要說也要寫 I am sorry - we say it, we hear it, we write it, or we read it 抱歉,我們說、聽、寫、讀單字 Spelling, I have many students from parts of the world who cannot spell, so my suggestion is this. 拼字,我有許多來自世界各地的學生不會拼字,所以我的建議是 Look at the word, you are already looking at the definition, write it out, ten times, write it out and look at it, then go away 看著單字,我們已經知道它的意思也寫出來了,這樣做十次,寫下來、看著他,然後離開 yes I said it, go away, relax, have a beer, no beer, have a tea, we need you smart right, have a tea 對,我是這樣講,離開,放鬆,喝杯啤酒,不要啤酒,喝杯茶,我們需要你的頭腦清醒,對,喝杯茶 talk to your friends come back and then spell it out again. 跟你的朋友聊個天,再回頭來拼出這個字 Look what mistakes you made, why did you make those mistakes, 看看你哪裡拼錯了,為什麼會出現這樣的錯誤 there may be grammar rules that will help you with those mistakes, such as I before E, except after C, right. 可能有一些文法的規則,幫助你釐清這些錯誤,像是I不在E之前,但C可以在他之前 Or when you hadn't, add a letter E after a consonant usually it actually affects the sound of the word inside 或是當你沒有這樣做的時候,加一個字母E在子音之後,就會改變一個字的念法 like fat and fate, becomes long, that’s another rule for another day 像是fat和fate,音會變長,但是另外一個規則了,改天再說 But the point is check your spelling, so write it out ten times come back later write it out 但是重點是看你的拼字,重複寫10次,過一下子再回來寫一次 It will help facilitate or help your memory, alright. 這會幫助你去記憶,好的 And finally recognize it, if somebody says to you, ‘oh that ceiling looks really old’ and you are going, 最後是認得他,如果有人對你說,’喔那個天花板看起來很老’,你可能會想 ‘what is ceiling, I've not heard of this ceiling before’, it’s no good to you, I mean if you can’t pronounce it Ceiling是什麼?我從來沒聽過這個字,如果你不能唸這個字,就不會是件好事 nobody understands you and you can’t recognize it when someone says it, 沒人可以聽懂你說的,當別人說這個字時,你也無法認得 you don’t know what they are talking about, so how do we do that? 你不知道他們在說什麼,所以我們要怎麼解決呢? Easy, another lesson is, speak slowly, do this, see-ling, we go slowly to get the stress 簡單,另外一個技巧是,慢慢的說,像這樣see ling,我們念得很慢就可以抓到重音 where is the stress, is it c-ling or see-ling learning the stress we are able to 重音是什麼,是c ling還是see ling,學好重音 when people speak faster pick it up, because when I say, look at the ceiling, it’s C-ling 當人們講話速度很快的時候也可以聽懂,因為當我說,看天花板,是C ling you need those stresses to catch the word, then your brain will catch it 你需要重音去辨認一個字,然後你的大腦會認得 So once again I suggest you say it very slowly at least four or five times very 所以我再一次的建議,慢慢的說,至少用四次到五次 very slowly and elongate that word and in the next five times say as fast as you possibly can 非常非常慢的說,拉長那個字,接下來,再用很快的速度唸五次 and say as fast as you possibly can - ceiling, ceiling, ceiling, ceiling 用你最快的速度唸 ceiling ceiling ceiling ceiling because then you are going to get the sounds that you must say in other words the sounds I must say so that you can hear it. 因為當那個字跟別的聲音、別的字一起出現,你也可以認得他 If you can do that, when someone says ‘Ceiling’ you will know it’s different than I am going seeing 如果你可以做到那樣,當別人說ceiling的時候你知道,他和seeing是不一樣的字 going to see something or you are seeing, not seeing, ceiling, you will catch it because you will know there was no ‘L’ stress 去看某件事情或是看著某個東西,seeing還是ceiling,你就可以分辨得出來,因為你知道沒有L的重音 it must be a different word, you like that, I like it too. 一定是個不同的單字,你喜歡嗎?我喜歡 So, how to master grammar, that’s the first mistake, this has nothing to do with grammar, son.
