His name is Chi Xu and he is CEO of xreal, a Chinese augmented reality firm backed by Alibaba.

The latest model of AR glasses is called the Xreal 1 series and according to the company are the world's first cinematic AR glasses with complete spatial screen control.

Earlier this year, the company revealed it had received $60 million in new funding, which it claims makes it an AR glasses unicorn.

Before we get into the product that you've just released, give us a little bit of background on the company.

It wasn't always called xreal, so tell us when and how did it start?

Okay, so the company was previously called Unreal and the name we're choosing for that is because that's the word between real and unreal.

So the kind of idea is very straightforward.

We want to create this kind of seamless blending of the real reality and the virtual objects and virtual information.

And we also thinking the future going from the mobile Internet is going to be spatial Internet.

And I think two years ago we upgraded the whole name the company from Unreal to xreal because we're thinking Axis are just cooler and we've been always the pioneers that are shipping this lightweight consumer AR glasses from day one.

We're so excited about this generation, this new product.

I think this is the biggest upgrade for actual history for sure.

And it might also potentially be the biggest upgrade for consumer AR history.

So we have this what we call a Customized silicon, we call it X1 to really enable this universal spatial anchor capability for all the devices you can connect it to.

And because of that chip, the audio, the visual, all this kind of experience, you get all around upgraded as well.

What are some of the things as a user you can do with them?

I think people been seeing like the movie, the Ironman movie, right?

You know, when you put on the Iron man suit, you know you have like a digital agent will talk to you like Javas and they can project some of the key information right in front of your eyes.

So this is like a perfect blend of the mixed reality, the digital world with the reality.

What we can happening right now is we want to put a very kind of lightweight, small form factor of glasses or just look like slightly bigger than the sunglasses.

But with that we have this wire where can connect it to your cell phone, your PC, any kind of computing devices or gaming devices.

And then we can reproject a massive 200 screen in front of you so you can play your game, you can watch your movies, you can even use as productivity glasses right away.

The use case for these, is it something that you see your customers wearing them kind of throughout the day or is it for gaming and possibly cinematic experiences?

Is that where you see the glasses being used?

So the glass is not designed for all day wear this, this is more like design for all day portable devices.

But you know, from time to time, maybe in the coffee shop, maybe laying down in the couch, or maybe on the plane, you want to take all the glasses and put this, you know, connected into your cell phone or gaming devices.

You have a much bigger screen to enjoy with and cheap.

What are you ultimately trying to aim for with this kind of product?

Of course, eventually in future, which is long term future, we think everybody going to wear glasses.

It's going to be very similar to what I'm wearing today is just regular prescription glasses where you can, as we mentioned, blend those kind of reality with all the Internet information.

With that being said, it's basically like your cell phone.

But it takes time, it takes an ecosystem to migrate from what we are having today, which is your cell phone, to the new platform.

But we have a separate kind of a product vision.

Can we actually build accessory that we can use today right away, which is can we have this glasses that can connect it to PC or cell phone or whatever you're having today.

People actually enjoy watching a big TV in your living room.

What if you actually can reproject this one on your ceiling while laying down in the couch?

Or what if you actually want to have a TV living room, TV kind of experience or even bigger, better experience while you're on the plane, on a train or even in the coffee shop.

This is something we can create right away.

And we think this is only 499 compared to maybe, in my opinion, it's actually better than a much pricier kind of TV set in your living room.

Chee, you said something interesting about ecosystems which are definitely going to get onto later in the episode.

But I want to start by thinking about the technology as you see it.

So right now, as you mentioned, we have these great displays that can be accessed through your product.

When you think about the sort of mixed reality augmented reality market more broadly, there are the glasses that yours and other companies are making and then there's the headset side of the equation.

I'm thinking here about the Apple Vision Pro and I had a chance to try that out this year and you mentioned the Iron man film.

Of course, another film that comes to mind is Minority Report, right.

And that's something of course the Apple Vision Pro does, does very well.

the other product here I want to mention is the Meta Orion glasses which of course is a prototype and is not being sold to the public, but

That's of course not sustainable as well.

So is there a possibility in your view to get to the capabilities of Orion and of the Vision Pro in a glasses form factor at a much more affordable price?

Absolutely, that is our mission and honestly I think you will see that very soon.
