There's three decisions you're making every moment you're alive.

And the way you make these three decisions shapes your destiny.

When I was 11 years old, we had a really, really tough Thanksgiving where there was no money and no food.

在我 11 歲的時候，我們度過了一個非常非常艱難的感恩節，沒有錢，也沒有食物。

It was the worst experience of my life.

這是我一生中最糟糕的經歷。

It was the most crushing experience I felt.

這是我感到最崩潰的一次經歷。

And then a miracle happened.

Bang on the door.

敲門

So I go answer the door.

於是我去開門。

And I answer the door and standing there is this giant man.

我去開門，站在門口的是一個巨人。

It was this little boy.

And he's holding this huge box of food.

And beside him on the ground was a black pot with an uncooked turkey in it.

And he said, is your father home?

And I said, just one moment.

我說，請稍等。

I was like, this is a gift from God.

This is going to change it all.

This can make my mom and dad happy.

這能讓我爸媽高興。

It's gonna be unbelievable.

And I said, dad, dad, there's a guy at the door.

And he was cold.

他很冷。

You answer the door.

I said, I did.

He's got to see you.

I said, dad, you gotta come.

我說，爸爸，你一定要來。

Walks to the door.

走到門口。

I'm waiting there.

我在那兒等你

Just can't wait to see his face.

And my dad opens the door.

我爸爸打開門

And this man's standing there with this big box of food.

這個人站在那裡，手裡拿著一大箱食物。

And my father did not get happy.

我的父親並不高興。

He looked at this man.

他看著這個人。

And he raised his voice to him.

And he said, look, we don't take charity.

他說，聽著，我們不接受施捨。

And then he took the door to slam it in the man's face.

然後，他奪門而出，狠狠地摔在那人的臉上。

But the man was a good sized man.

但此人身材魁梧。

He put his foot there and smacked his foot and bounced back over.

He said, sir, sir, this is not charity.

Everybody else, tough time.

其他人的日子就不好過了。

Somebody knows you're having a tough time.

有人知道你過得很艱難。

And they want you to have a magical Thanksgiving.

I'm just the delivery guy.

我只是個送貨員

He said, please take this.

他說，請收下這個。

And my father said, we don't take charity.

我父親說，我們不接受施捨。

He went to slam it again.

他又去摔了。

And this time the guy put his shoulder against it.

這一次，那傢伙用肩膀頂住了它。

So he couldn't do it.

所以他做不到。

And then the guy said something that I'll never forget.

然後那個人說了一句我永遠不會忘記的話。

And in moments I wish he hadn't said.

有的時候，我真希望他沒說過。

But he found a way to force my father.

但他找到了逼迫我父親的辦法。

He's holding this thing.

他拿著這個東西

He looked at me.

他看著我。

And then he looked at my dad.

然後他看著我爸爸。

And he said, don't make your family suffer because of your ego.

他說，不要因為你的自負而讓你的家人受苦。

Now my dad's level of energy increased.

現在，我爸爸的精力更加充沛了。

But he was also trapped.

但他也被困住了。

So he took the food, slammed it on our table and slammed the door in the man's face.

And never even thanked him.

And I remember that day just thinking, you know, I don't understand.

And years and years later, I began to understand a little bit.

Years I figured out our whole life is shaped by decisions.

That's what we've talked about today, right?

But there's three decisions you're making every moment you're alive.

And the way you make these three decisions shapes your destiny.

First decision we're all making every moment is what are you going to focus on?

我們每時每刻都在做的第一個決定就是，你要關注什麼？

What are you going to focus on?

你的重點是什麼？

I realized that my father's life and my life ended up very different.

我意識到，父親的人生和我的人生最終截然不同。

Because we made that day three decisions very differently.

因為我們那天做出的三個決定截然不同。

He decided to focus on the fact that he has not fed his family.

他決定把注意力集中在自己沒有養活家人這一事實上。

The second question is, as you're focusing on, what does this mean?

第二個問題是，正如你們所關注的，這意味著什麼？

What does it mean?

And the bottom line on meaning is, if you think about it, you get to make up the meaning.

And most people pick the worst one, don't they?

That day, my father decided to focus on the fact he hadn't fed his family.

And I know what meaning he gave because he said it out loud over and over again.

我知道他說的是什麼意思，因為他一遍又一遍地大聲說出來。

That he was worthless because he had not taken care of his family.

說他一無是處，因為他沒有照顧好家人。

And then the final, most important decision you make every moment you're alive.

然後是你活著的每時每刻都在做的最後一個最重要的決定。

What am I going to do?

What am I going to do?

我該怎麼辦？

And I'll tell you what he decided to do.

我來告訴你他決定怎麼做。

He decided to leave our family shortly thereafter.

此後不久，他決定離開我們家。

Three years ago, he passed away.

三年前，他去世了。

He died alone.

他孤獨地死去。

I was the only one to go to his funeral.

我是唯一一個參加他葬禮的人。

No one else in the family would go.

家裡沒有其他人願意去。

I can tell you right before his death, he got the lesson because he looked at me.

我可以告訴你，就在他死前，他得到了教訓，因為他看著我。

And he said, son, he said, I was a bastard.

I didn't connect with anybody and look what I'm dying of.

我沒有和任何人建立聯繫，看看我現在是怎麼死的。

And my life turned out very different than him.

而我的人生卻與他大相徑庭。

What changed my life was the meaning I gave it.

改變我生活的是我賦予它的意義。

I decided that day that what this means is that strangers care.

那天我決定，這意味著陌生人的關心。

And if strangers care about me and my family, I decided what I was going to do is I was going to care about strangers.

如果陌生人關心我和我的家人，我決定我要做的就是關心陌生人。

And that completely changed my life.

這徹底改變了我的生活。

I promised myself someday I'd do well enough to do this for other families.

我向自己保證，總有一天我會做得足夠好，為其他家庭做這件事。

I was done for me.

我已經完了。

I realized in that moment that the worst day of my life, my father leaving had actually been the best day of my life.

那一刻我意識到，父親的離開是我生命中最糟糕的一天，但實際上卻是我生命中最美好的一天。

Because if I hadn't had that experience, I wouldn't be here today.

因為如果沒有那段經歷，我就不會有今天。

And now because of that, I'm get to live this life.

正因為如此，我才能過上這樣的生活。

I have the desire and the drive and the want to give it this way.

我有這樣的願望和動力。

I tell you the story for a couple of reasons.

我告訴你這個故事有幾個原因。

One is, if you want to change your life, figure out how your worst day was your best day.

其一是，如果你想改變自己的生活，那就找出你最糟糕的一天是如何成為你最好的一天的。

You'll change everything because it is if you look for it, if you find the deeper meaning, it is.

你會改變一切，因為只要你去尋找，只要你找到更深層次的意義，它就會改變。

Last year, we fed over a million people now in nine countries around the world.
